2016 US Nationals Senior Men SP

My two cents:
When skaters (in whichever one discipline, from whichever country) lack the talent & consistency to be considered a realistic medal favorite at the upcoming world championships, it's hard for me to care about "keeping/earning 3 spots for NEXT year..." unless we're talking about Olympics vs Worlds. For me, it's more understandable to be invested in the 3-spots talk when there is an undeniable depth of world medal contenders in one discipline from one country (i.e. Russian pairs & ladies, Japanese men & ladies, etc). So for this U.S Nationals, I just hope each competing male skater skates/performs their best, and that they build enough momentum to worlds to be considered a dark horse favorite for a medal IF Hanyu/Javi/Chan/Uno/Boyang falter/withdraw.

Regarding Max Aaron: Given his technical ability (which has been good enough for him to win a few medals/titles here & there), and with the withdrawals of Jason & Joshua, I'd definitely consider him the favorite to win this year's National title again (with Rippon a close second). Max reminds me of Elvis Stojko, who was simply incapable and/or unwilling to develop & grow "artistically" (and instead relied on being the most consistent jumper of his time). Unfortunately Max doesn't have that consistency, yet, and even if he did, it wouldn't be good enough to be considered a gold medal contender under this judging system. BUT after watching his Skate America programs this season, I have to say that he shows the promise to develop a style of his own (which may never be as "artististic" as the top skaters in the world), but at least exciting enough to continue threatening podium finishes when he hits all his jumps (like Michael Weiss, Timothy Goebel, Brian Joubert, etc). I admit that skating to Black Swan was not the best fit for him at this stage in his career, but to me it shows his willingness and desire to improve/develop/widen his "artistic" range.
Speaking of Adam Rippon, I love his skating, but I don't care for his programs this year...maybe if he skate them perfectly, with a quad lutz, I'll change my mind. =)

Pardon me if this has been discussed ad nauseum already, but what is the record for the youngest man to win the senior title? I wonder where Nathan would stand relative to others in history...

I'm happy to see Curran Oi back in the US Nationals roster. Wonder if this is the only year of his comeback attempt or if he will continue.

ETA, behind-the-scenes color from IN:

Drama

The draws for senior events are seeded, with the skaters who were byed through to the championships drawing for the last two groups. Max Aaron drew first and picked 18, and then Adam Rippon drew and got, wait for it, 19 -- last to skate. Rippon did a big pretend gasp and said, "Drama!" (which was funny, because that's what everyone was thinking). Nathan Chen wasn't at the draw, and the person who drew for him pretended to be nervous about the pressure.

"Drama!" Rippon said again.

So nice to see Curran Oi again! :) Good luck to him in the SP. :yay:

Amusing statement on Curran's wikipedia page right now:

"Curran enjoys hot beverages and the springtime. But NOT puppies."

Will we get to watch through the wonderful, albeit illegal Korean Stream again? Or is there NBC showing?

I don't know but when someone finds out, I'd really appreciate it if they'd post and let us know. Come on MAX!!!

It is nice indeed to see him back. I don't think I've ever seen him as a senior skater. I remember him from Junior Grand Prix in Oslo 2006. I went there because it was a figure skating competition near me. I tell you, when looking at the men's result, I only recognize Abzal Rakhimgaliev still competing. At the time I was curious to watch Adrian Schultheiss, who was then a promising Swedish skater. Sadly he later had to retire because of back problems.

GO Curran!

I really enjoy all the US men that I'm familiar with (and hope to enjoy some of the ones I'm not), so I'm just hoping for a really well skated competition, and may the best men wind up on top!

I've not been able to see ANY video on Ice Network. I am contacting them for a refund because this is inexcusable. So I hope there is some alternate way to view the competition, since IN is clearly so incompetent.

Go Adam! Go Max! I hope they have a great short program, since yesterday's women's short dance was uniformly awful (so I hear, since IN wouldn't let me view ANY of the competition).

I have not had any problems with IceNetwork. Perhaps the problem is not on their end.

*pacing anxiously* Good grief, good grief, still nearly an hour and a half until the competition starts, and four and half hours until Max...this is why I needed Jason and Joshua at Nationals, having all my nerves channeled into one skater is just too too much!

Oh, and prior warning: I am about to take some Cold/Flu tablets (of course I would get a cold in the middle of summer) and I think they have the "good stuff" in them (I had to give the pharmacist my driver's licence). If my posts get wacky, well, don't say I didn't warn you all.

Karne, with respect, I am certain it is not my router/connection/wifi. I've checked with my IP, and also run other programs. Sadly, everything runs as it should. So I am both sad and mad at IN.

But I am glad that it is running well for you- it's truly great to know that it is working for you. Hopefully it is working for others too.

I hope your cold goes away quickly. Being sick is terrible.

I look forward to everyone's commentary. Keep me (us) apprised!
