Mao Asada

A fan uploaded a bit slow version of her “So Deep In The Night”, if you have interest. :)

Beautiful positions!

That's so beautiful! I've always really liked Mao skating to Chopin... I feel like she's one of the few skaters who can do Chopin's piano music justice.

Since she's done Chopin's Ballade no. 1 to exhibition, I've always wondered what it'll be like to see her skate to Chopin's ballade no. 2... it's not as well known as the 1st ballade, that's for sure, but I feel like it would suit her style of skating

Here's Mao in the 2 commercials she just made with her sister, Mai. I wonder if Mao will be making movies someday. She is a natural actress. Genuine not overdone and so photogenic. I think her sister Mai is good too.

NICE JOB! Has Mao expressed interest in pursuing acting as at least a minor career? If she is interested, I would be surprised if she hasn't been able get some auditions for at least some walk on roles on some Japanese TV shows.

I like both, but I think the adorable clip fits Mao's natural character more and I think it is more appealing because I really like her smile, so overall I like this one better.

My favorite expressions of Mao looking passionate, determined and a little fierce are in Bells of Moscow and Rach II when she looks like this. I like these expressions just as much as her adorable look. :

Rach II: http://jto.s3.amazonaws.com/wp-content/uploads/2013/11/p14-jack-a-20131107.jpg

I also love Mao's expression in my avatar. Sometimes this one is my favorite. Bittersweet joy

and the dreamy, longing for far away look: http://jto.s3.amazonaws.com/wp-content/uploads/2013/10/sp20131022f1b.jpg

or her charming and funny look which has so much personality and is so entertaining: http://jto.s3.amazonaws.com/wp-content/uploads/2013/02/sp20130210f1a.jpg

And from this season:

But more than any other, here is the expression I want to see on Mao's face at the end of both her performances at Worlds. Pure joy:

These pictures that you have chosen are all great. I like fierce samurai Mao too.
And I love to see Mao in I Got Rhythm costume, I also think the color really enhances her charm.

Ballade no.2 sounds interesting. I think she will pull it off as long as it’s by Chopin no matter what

Here is another So Deep In The Night performance by her that’s at JSC 2008, it looks dreamy and her sunshine smile at the very end adding some fine atmosphere.

I remember I saw an interview with Rafael (unfortunately I don't remember who did it and I can't find it anymore) but he was asked if he had any regrets as a coach and he said that the way him and Mao parted and the way he behaved at that moment was one of his biggest regrets. She left America when her mother fell ill and she wanted to stay as long as possible in Japan with her family. Arutunian who didn't know the situation asked Mao to come back to America or he would stop coaching her because it was impossible for him to coach her with her being in Japan most of the time. He gave her an ultimatum to come back and she stayed in Japan so they parted.
In the interview he really seemed to be sad about how it happened and to be still very fond of Mao.

Thank you! :) :)

Also, I had two questions that were on my mind for a long time. I thought of putting them in the stupid questions thread but they were both about Mao and the 2013-2014 season, so this is probably the best place to ask. And I feel a bit dumb not knowing the answers to these questions as a big Mao fan. Facepalm for me...:slink:

1. I frequently re-watch Mao's performances throughout the whole 2013-2014 season, and there was something I was always confused about. At SA and NHK when Mao did her solo 3F in the SP, the Eurosport commentators said that there was supposed to be a combo on the 3F. I knew that she did 3A, 3F-2Lo, 3Lo in the 2012-2013 season, but I was wondering if she originally planned that same layout in the GP series of 2013-2014. The commentators didn't point it out at the GPF, so maybe that was when she permanently decided to do 3Lo-2Lo?

2. Did Mao or her team ever talk about why they changed both her SP and FS costumes at NHK and the GPF and then they went back to the original ones for the individual event at Sochi?

I don't know the answer to the first question, but I do remember hearing something about one of Mao's costumes in the LP restricting her movement or being uncomfortable. I think it was the original costume at Skate America. I am guessing that they went to another costume until a replacement for the original could be made. I am not sure, though. I wish she could skate in that costume all the time. She sure did skate great in it, both in the Sochi LP and Worlds LP. Plus, It's really beautiful. The deep blue color with Mao's elegant movements reminds me of the flow of the ocean.

I see. Thank you so much gotoschool!

Do you possibly know about what was with the SP costume change as well? Both dresses were gorgeous (my favourite ones in the season out of all the ladies). Also, she changed her FS dress at NHK, but changed the SP dress at the GPF. Does this mean that the change may not have the same reason as the FS dress, since the timing was different? Sorry if I'm asking too much...

Re. the SP costume, I recall vaguely that the 2nd version of Nocturne was a suggestion from Coach Kumiko Sato. She suggested Mao to try out a deeper colour, so she'd look more mature. As for the final choice of picking 1st lavender version for Sochi and WC, the decision was probably based on a fan-voting held prior to Olympics.

Adding: Both Mao's SP/FS costumes @ Sochi were made by a domestic designer Tomoko Yasuno: http://corazonltd.jp/yasuno/profile.html (Yasuno recently designed the costume of Jupiter 2.0, also the costume of Madame Butterfly this season). Interesting, in Yasuno's major work profile it quotes that she 'made' Mao's FS costume, but not designing it. So perhaps the original design of Rach 2 dress was not by Yasuno (but the lavender Nocturne dress was)

For the 1st question about 3F-2L/3L-2L, I thought that was a mistake by Eurosport commentators at the beginning of the season. They probably assumed that Mao would have her old layout with 3F-2L. But she's never changed her layout and was consistently using 3L-2L for that season. As we all know, Mao rarely make up for a jump (combination) mistake by adding a jump later on. And IIRC there was no problem with her solo 3F in SP at SA, so the 3L-2L layout should have been planned from the very beginning of that season.

Thank you for sharing. I can't help but think of how much Mao was carrying on her slim shoulders at 2008 Worlds (her mother's illness, being coach less in the season's biggest competition due to circumstances beyond her control) and for her to rise above all that as well as that horrific fall in her free program and win speaks volumes of her character.

Thanks cohkaix!

No problem! To add to the point about 3L-2L, here's a video of CaOI (the EX of JO) in which she's already doing the A/3F/x3L-2L layout:
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=FvfuL3KkHjE

Or else the videos of THE ICE 2013 should also tell. Mao doesn't usually perform her new SP of the following season during THE ICE, but for 2013 THE ICE there was an exception and she did show her Olympic SP early on. Unfortunately I couldn't find the videos of THE ICE 2013 at the moment.

Thanks for the information about Mao's costumes cohkaix and for the link to the Rafael interview, turquoiseblue . I really like how he supports Mao in the interview. Your welcome too randomfan

I couldn't find a video for the 2013 Carnival on Ice, but I did find this really cute video of Mao eating and speaking English. Maybe others have seen it before, but it was the first time I saw it. Mao speaks adorable English and makes funny faces in the 1st minute.

Here is a new video with beautiful photos of Mao in traditional Japanese dress and makeup mixed in with a lot of photos of her skating to Madame Butterfly and the new Jupiter.
