Elena Ilinykh & Ruslan Zhiganshin

If they would be doing Edward Scissorhands Ruslan would have to take the part and I don't think that this would be a good image for Ruslan next season. He has to either show strength or be the perfect screen for Elena.
I love the Sherlock Holmes idea.
I like the Penny Dreadful Dreadful soundtrack and I won't consider myself superstitious, but projects with certain names can cause a lot of trouble.

Not necessarily.

I'm on board with the idea of something dark and dramatic. Maybe Joby Talbot's Fool's Paradise or Schittke's music for Master & Margarita.

They do drama very well, so why not. I wonder though who is going to choreograph their programs this season. It would be great if they could get someone like Jennifer Swan or Christopher Dean. Elena and Ruslan are two creative souls and Swan or Dean could be a good fit for them. I know that Kustarova gets a lot of criticism for her choreo, but how I understood it IZ also worked with her on the Frida choreo and she did Y/M`s Tango program.

Coaches always have some input on choreography, especially when it's by a non skater. They have to help translate it to ice, fit the rules, and make any changes necessary. For Carmen, Najarro came up with the moves but Kustarova figured out how to put them together and translate as much as possible to the ice.

I love Edward Scissor hands!!!

The judges want soft, big, sweeping and romantic. Scissor Hands might be too left of center for their little minds to manage considering they couldn't even appreciate Frida. It's just the time we live in :(

So that's why Sherlock seems a bit more palatable at this time, to me that is. :)

And that program was loved by judges and fans :)

In retrospective I have to say that they really pushed it this season. They changed all their lifts and step sequences and if that wasn`t enough they added more intricacy and transitions in both of their programs. We always have to remember that this partnership isn`t even 2 years old. I remember what a mess W/P used to be the first 4/5 years of their partnership and they were not on the level I/Z are now.

Another couple they could try and depict are Coco Chanel and Igor Stravinsky. They could use music from the 2009 movie. Elena and Ruslan could definitely bring the passion to that story.

I think that Elena and Ruslan are one of the more versatile teams out there and could just about do any style or theme. I think they could excel at romantic comedy along the realms of When Harry Meets Sally and Romancing the Stone.

I know that you are right, but while watching P/C and S/K back to back it just came apparent that other teams may try to imitate what P/C did last year, but nobody excels in that style the way the French do. There are good FDs this season, like the Shibs or W/P`s FDs, but they are still inferior to what P/C are showing.
It really depends which strategy I/Z`s coaching team is going to have for next season. If their goal is to get back into the judges` good graces, they should maybe try something like Mozart, but I don`t think it`s the right strategy if their aim is to getting closer to that podium. What stands out with I/Z is their power, speed, fire and passion. For me, right now, there aren`t many teams, who bring so many emotions to their performances the way Elena and Ruslan do. D/W managed to beat V/M although Tessa and Scott were the better dancers. IMO, one key of D/W´s rise was that they skated a completely different style than V/M. The other was of course politics and that is a whole other issue for I/Z, which I`m not sure how they can solve if they stay with Kustarova.

Yeah, they need to stick to what they do well. What happens if you go too far down the smooth and lyrical rabbithole can now be seen with Paul/Islam. S/K also shouldn't be used as a stylistic barometer for anything IMO. What S/K are doing in the FD is strategic, it's a straight-forward, pleasant, rather conservative vehicle that shows them off well and establishes them as a dance pair after last year's disaster, it's not some great artistic statement. Next year will be much more telling where S/K as performers and dancers are concerned IMO.

Back to I/Z: Whimsical and dramatic works for them. And something that Ruslan can perform well, I found that was sometimes a problem in this year's FD. I still vote for Shostakovich, loads of great material to choose from. Or the Beetlejuice soundtrack? You don't have to go literal, just do something spooky and a bit out there. "Out of the Woods" has lovely songs.

I love all of your music ideas. Right now you have me seriously attached to any Danny Elfman score, lol. I consider Elena and Ruslan to be skaters on the side of powerful and they would nail. I also think they need music that drives.

Yeah, its how do they show themselves off so nicely as they did with Carmen and Frida. Yes Frida seemed very intricate for them as a couple at this stage, but they show great promise. I'm excited for next season.

PS. Maybe more couples will begin to understand soon enough that there's only one P/C, probably right after they repeat as world champions in Boston.

I agree. I rather liked Paul/Islam, but I agree with your assessment. I hope P/I can get out of it.

Also I agree about S/K. If I had to guess, I would say they will try some of the more difficult material that they tried last year, but they weren't ready last year. Not sure they'll be ready next year either, but one supposes, they will build towards that.

And now for I/Z. Frida was a bit much for them this year. Frida was so artsy and intricate, it had so much promise and then ended up swallowing them. For them, this year, it was just over-choreographed.

However, I can definitely see them trying something like Frida in the future. Maybe next year, maybe the year after that, not sure. Maybe next year they should do something that is a step below Frida art, to re-establish themselves. And then kill it with something elaborate and artsy in the Olympic season. I think something like Frida does suit them, they just need a bit more time.

Is there any news for Cup of Russia Final? I felt a sudden need to see them skate again after the recent Frida discussions.

Paul/Islam lost their third spot to Paradis/Ouellette at Nationals not because of the style of their FD, but because of a botched lift in it. Yes, their FD PCS was actually lower than P/O's as well, but I think it would have been higher if not for that mistake.

I`ve recently rewatched their Carmen SD from CoR and I can`t wait to see them again next season

Jorge Mendez has some beautiful pieces, which maybe could be used for a FD. Besides to Cold, which I`ve posted few days ago, there is also Fallen https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=fU-0wOlfv_Q or Shades https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ptKadUDWiM0
