Adelina Sotnikova

Hey guys, wanted to bring up a subject nobody really talked about neither on Russian nor English speaking forums. It's about Maria Sotnikova, Adelina's younger sister. She suffers from the Treacher Collins syndrome, a severe illness which requires a lot of money for treatment. The money her family didn't have before Adelina found success. Now I'm pretty sure that Adelina now has enough funds (or got government support), but this, IMO, truly explains her motivation. I would love her to come back and skate well but her main goal was to keep her sister alive and healthy. From Adelina's wiki: "Sotnikova credits Maria as the most influential person on her career and sees figure skating as a job to support her sister".

In this Russian documentary - "Princess" from Birulevo, you can see footage of Maria Sotnikova from 23:33 - 25:40.
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Vno4o-YHSU4.

About translation of the documentary, there is much that you already don't know except Maria and that arthritis cut Vodorezova/Buyanova's career short.
Oh and also, Adelina was born premature and weighed just over a kilo at birth. So it's a miracle that she even became an elite athlete.

Just wanted to share this with you.

Thanks for sharing. I already knew about her sister's illness and her being her motivation She has mentioned it in a lot of interviews. They had gotten help to get Maria to have some surgery. I am sure she is happy now that she can take care of her sister. She also loves skating which is why I think she continues.

Is it just me or the ice is tooooo small?

I was thinking the same thing but all these show rinks look small to me. This one has more than one platform for the singers and dancers that moves across the ice. When it goes back to connect to the larger platform it still sticks out some 90% it seems, making the ice surface smaller.

Great that she enjoyed her time in Switzerland, that's how it should be her enjoying herself.

I wonder if she has any more shows for the rest of the season or what are her plans.
