2016 Team Challenge Cup - Gen Info/Pre-chat

I hope that Liam stays on the TCC ballot.

IIRC, the TCC official requirement for nominees for fan voting is something like "those who qualified for Worlds" -- so I hope that means Liam still meets the requirement.
(I am too sad :sad4: about Liam and Worlds to look up the exact language.)

ETA:
I have dried my tears for Liam long enough to look at the TCC Announcement. The wording of the requirement is "Skaters who are entered in the 2016 ISU World Figure Skating Championships." Sigh. Still hope that Liam will remain on the TCC ballot.

I was supporting Max for Team North America, although I love Liam and I like Adam.

And now I am torn more than ever over whom I want to win the TCC vote. It would be great for everyone to rally around Liam.

Liam and Max are friends, so I imagine that Max is sad about Liam's withdrawal from Worlds.
When 2014 US Nats and 2014 Canadian Nats were taking place at the same time, Max and Liam were keeping in touch to give each other long-distance moral support for Sochi slots.
I am verklempt :sad4: :sad4: :sad4: :sad4: :sad4: :sad4: :sad4: :sad4: :sad4:.

liam is no longer on the voting thing. it says WITHDRAWN over his voting photo. this is pretty sad, he gave canada a solid and took a bullet for their future hopes, and he's rewarded like this... i know the rules are the rules but..sigh..pretty sad.

almost 1000 votes from california. i hope ISU/USFS sees this and realizes that it'd be smart to finally have an event on the west coast/california! (yes i know spokane is in washington, but look at how many votes they have. are there even any training centers up there? i don't know why the USFS seems to hate california, our top ladies all train here, yet all the events are in the middle of nowhere cornfields.)

I think there are two considerations. One is, which communities are willing to put together a strong local organizing group to host such an event. The other is, who has a track record of success.

If I am not mistaken, Spokane still holds the all-time attendance records for U.S. Nationals, from both 2007 and 2010. Also, I believe that they still hold the attendance record for Skate America, from 2002. There is an enthusiastic go-to team in Spokane that always does a good job in hosting skating events.

I may be wrong, but I do not believe that the 2012 Nationals in San Jose was particularly successful. For some reason, people in the corn fields of Spokane really like figure skating competitions and do a good job in organizing and promoting them. :)

Also if I recall, Skate America in Ontario, Calif. from 2011 surprisingly did not do that well, despite being in the land of elite skating training skaters.

And to defend Spokane, while it's not coastal Seattle, it holds it own! It's definitely a regional center for the Inland Northwest, along with Boise. It's not some little town.

It seems like a case could be made that Liam was, at the time the voting commenced, "entered" in the World Championships. (?) Then he subsequently withdrew?

It seems like a double whammy to force him out of the World Championship berth that he earned, however narrowly and unexpectedly, on the ice -- and then toss him out of this opportunity for good measure. Possibly he changed his mind and decided that he did not want to compete ate the TCC after all.

And that's another thing! Back in the day, it was the "Inland Empire." But then some valley in California stole our name!

Spokane was the "Capital of the Inland Empire" because it was the transportation hub for agricultural products grown in Eastern Washington, North Idaho and the Columbia Basin. Every once in a while a petition would come around to make this region a new state (the name "Lincoln" was proposed -- get it? Washington, Lincoln ;) ), with Spokane as the capital. That'll show those big city folks from Seattle that they can't push us around. )

By the way, counting the Valley, Spokane now has a population of about 300,000 souls. I am going to write a letter to the Spokesman-Review and tell people to vote, vote, vote. How is Zijun Li doing?

Note:
The TCC site still is accepting votes for Liam :yay:, even though the "withdrawn" label has been placed over his photo. (True at least for voting via Firefox.)

But I take it that even if Liam were to win the voting, he would not be given the Team North America slot.

Does seem like a double whammy :sad4:.

(I suppose that we cannot rule out the possibility that he actively withdrew from TCC voting, but I doubt it. If I were Liam, I would be more interested in TCC than ever.
He was one of the skaters who tweeted something after the voting started -- along the lines of (I'm paraphrasing): if you want to see me at TCC, vote for me at this link ....
Ironically, Skate Canada also had tweeted a TCC campaign message for both Liam and Alaine.)

Has anyone noticed how the South Koreans are voting in large numbers against the Russians? The voting should be restricted by region - so that Europeans vote for the European team and not have it influenced otherwise.

I don't see them voting against the Russians? I just see a voting war between Rika and So Youn. If anything it seems like the people involved in the voting between Rika and Park are only casting their votes for the that one category and don't care to cast votes for the rest of the ballet, but I don't think it affects the others?
Edit: Oh nvm. I see it now. Most of Angelina's votes are coming from S. Korea. Maybe they actually really like her?

As a California resident, I can tell you that the biggest problem with events coming to San Francisco or LA is the expense. Didn't they have an event at the Staple Center? In Los Angeles, you can find a decently priced hotel relatively close to down town. San Francisco, not so much. We have the Save Mart Center here in Fresno/Clovis and we've big acts come to town and they seem to like it.

Our claim to fame is when Madonna said..."Fres-No..That's Bulls**t" "I say...Fres-Yes" The crowd went WILD!!!!!:cheer2:

Given the situation for the Canadian men this year, can anyone foresee that it is possible that there would be no qualified candidates for the "fan vote" for the North American team? They can always fill the "automatic spots" by going down the standings as skaters decline, but the fan vote candidates must be entered in worlds. At the moment, there are no Canadian candidates for men, and there wouldn't have been from the beginning if the Canadian world team hadn't changed. If Daleman had declined, Chartrand would have been the "automatic" entry and there would have been no Canadian women candidates for the fan vote. If something similar happened in the US, they could be left with only one candidate or no candidates at all in some N/A categories.

It's not too likely as long as the US has three worlds entries, but if you have only two, and the automatic entry also goes to worlds, it only takes one decline to run out of skaters. It also helps the situation if the the standings-based entry isn't on the worlds team, but you can't really count on that always happening. North America needs another country! How about Australia?

Russia went from 3,500 Euro women votes with 60+% for Radionova and 30% for Medvedeva, to 12,600 votes for Euro women with now 38% for Radionova and 46% for Medvedeva!

edit: That Yaroslavl region became the most avtive region in voting overnight with, now, 2500+ votes (99% Medvedeva )

There is a motorbike racer that I have chatted to quite frequently over the years who is from Yaroslavl. And she is into figure skating.

I wonder if this surge in voting is down to her... ;)

I'm going to TCC & I'm very disappointed that Yuzuru, Javi, Patrick & Mao won't be there, but I still think it'll be worthwhile to follow the unusual format, including the coed practices for singles, & to see Jason, Tukt & Voronov have extensions to their seasons (as well as the other skaters coming off Worlds). I'm wondering about the guests who are supposed to be invited to the gala. I'm hoping that some or all of the team captains will perform (maybe with Jayne Torvill showing up) & maybe Ben Agosto will show up to skate with Tanith (since she's commentating & he lives in the state) - that would really make it special!

Upnights, glad to hear that you still feel that TCC will be worthwhile.

I will admit that I selfishly am excited that you are attending -- b/c I appreciate very much that you have documented past events with countless great photos and videos.
Many thanks to you .

Hope you get your wish re Tanith and Ben (who now is based in Arizona, BTW).

Thanks! I'll be going to Worlds as well (& will try to post videos from that, despite the USFSA video policy:dev2:). Thanks for the correction re Ben - but I still hope he might like to go back to visit beautiful Washington state (from beautiful Arizona).

At this point Kuchvalska has overtaken Medvedeva in the voting :eeking: How unexpected, but then again, maybe not, considering that it's mostly due to Korea.

Thx for the good news re Boston, Upnights :yay:.
Lucky you :) to attend Worlds -- and lucky me ;) (and others ) to feel as if we are there via your videos and photos.
Thanks again for sharing your experiences with us.

Earlier in the voting, Kuchvalska already had been ahead of Medvedeva for a while .... but then Medvedeva came back and surpassed her.

And now Kuchvalska once again has turned the tables ....
