Satoko Miyahara

Satoko is back in Japan. She says she is keenly aware of the differences between her and the ladies who made the podium at Worlds and wishes to keep working hard on the quality of her speed, overall performance and jumps. She is frustrated with her result but at the same time glad that the competition is over.

A lot of positive feedback and some point of views that are completely different from what I've read from most forum members. At the same time they express my exact thoughts and feelings about her skating.

"You get this feeling like she could reign over a country. Total presence. She skates this program like she's got a secret, and if you're lucky she'll tell you the secret. Poised is the word I'm gonna go with. And the posture, she has such beautiful posture in her landings, there wasn't a moment in her program where she looked stressed, strained, awkward, never once. Absolute perfection. And then the acting skills - Tom Dickson chose moments of stillness where he saw power in her eyes and that power came through in the choreography in those still moments." - Kurt Browning on her SP

"She's a tiny girl but the extension she gets, the way everything goes from the ends of her fingers to the ends of her toes - it makes her look like an enormous presence on the ice. Totally commanding." - Carol Lane on her SP

"She doesn't have the biggest jumps in the world, but they are precise, beautifully landed and 9 times out of 10 clean as a whistle. She never wastes a gesture, an arm movement, a toe point, it all means something." - Carol Lane on her FS

"The audience - instant standing ovation. Everything else (except jumps) are a gift to the skating gods to her. Just gotta get in the air higher, that's a major flaw." - Kurt Browning on her FS

Satoko is one of the most graceful skater in the current field and reminds me so much of my favorite skater (except the jumps). Even though her jumps aren't big, her landings are beautiful and have lovely flowing edge. I'm excited to see what her next programs would be for the next season! I hope she's having a much deserved rest and come back stronger. :)

Not yet. She will skate in the Stars On Ice Japan tour in the following days and then go back to the United States to compete at Team Challenge Cup. She may start working on new programs in May.

I will say nothing about the scores because it will just upset me more. All I will say is that Satoko had one of my favorite performances of the night and that I'm very proud of all that she has accomplished this year. Well done and I'm looking forward to more amazing programs next season. :luv17:

This x10000

I generally talked myself down not to go in Ladies' World thread and give my deepest frustrations there about scoring, PCS from other space for some very medicore-ish skaters who - aside of high jumps, long limbs and flying arms - have nothing else to present right now and then got 73 kind of PCS. It would make things worse and deepen my sadness only.

Just want to say that Satoko and Mao's free programs brought tears in my eyes and enabled me to really appreciate beauty of music, choreography and continuity of their movement (Anna P. skate also left me very emotional, but for other reason as she had so troubled season, full of scary falls and doubts about her ability to deliver). Satoko showed herself as a great competitor, with fire and determination and in my opinion it's really not her fault that ladies' judging nowadays is based almost solely on height of your jumps/how tall you are, it's simply sad.

Like many of you pointed, she has a great and successful season overall and will leave us fans some fantastic performances to re-watch in future. I seriously hope that her humble approach, respect paid to other competitors, hard work ethic and steely determination to develop will get her more and more success, just please stay healthy and don't get discouraged by pointless critics so heavily aimed at you, Satoko! :cheer:

She is really humble.

a real class act, so refreshing to hear that someone is actually that humble and respectful towards other skaters with so much self-awareness...Can't imagine many others to behave like that though

Well, I never intended to post on this forum, fearing I'd get sucked into it, and maybe it will happen.

But Satoko is quickly leaping to the head of the field of my favorite skaters with both her skating and personality. I loved those pictures and coach Yamato seems to be a really great guy and probably the perfect match for his student.
The possible allegory with the bear is hilarious but I do wonder if it was intentional.

Welcome, Shiraste. Yamato Tamura was known to be an eccentric skater back in the day and he competed at the Nagano Olympics alongside Takeshi Honda. You can see him here with a very young Daisuke Takahashi

His personality is opposite to Satoko's, he is outspoken and very funny but when it comes to Satoko in reality he will fight all the bears that would dare get near her  He's like a weird uncle who brought her up ever since she was a novice. He said he cried during the medal ceremony at last year's Worlds and was anxiously following this year's 4CC on his phone from the Youth Olympic Games, where he was accompanying Yuna Shiraiwa. It's obvious that he loves his student very much.

Thank you for the welcome, ioanna, and for the information!

I didn't know that Yamato Tamura was that.. flamboyant.

I think Satoko might be just as funny as her coach, just a lot shier, judging from Li Zijun's video at the banquet, and I think Hongo Rika said something like that about her a while back, too.
I am sure if our lovely little lady ever had to face a bear there would be many to jump to her rescue. :agree2:

Shiraiwa Yuna was actually my favorite Japanese junior this season, maybe because she came totally out of nowhere and some of her skating is very reminiscent of Satoko, imo.

She is good friends with Rika Hongo and Yuna Shiraiwa has said that Satoko is her skating hero. :agree2:

May I ask which video of Li Zijun's are you referring to?

Her live stream from the closing banquet. Satoko and Rika had a brief appearance.
