2016 Team Challenge Cup - Gen Info/Pre-chat

Because, really, why would a speed-skating subscriber purchase just this one random figure-skating event? Makes no sense.

I think they totally figured that we would all just blindly subscribe & not click the link to "subscriber" events that they had on THE VERY SAME PAGE!

Yeah, I really can't even but at least they evidently plan to honor the original terms for customers savvy enough to complain. I just hope too may people don't get suckered into subscribing who have already subscribed. Unfortunately not all fans read this forum and a lot of people are too trusting.

I just got off the phone with them (actually, two phone calls) & was told the email was sent to everyone as a "mistake"; the only subscribers who have to pay the $9.99 are those who signed up only for the speed-skating package. Those of us who have the figure-skating package don't have to pay extra.

I told the agent that both the email and the website are very confusing and that many paid subscribers on figure-skating forums are quite upset and already discussing a class-action lawsuit. I recommended that Ice Network immediately issue a new email to clarify the situation & also immediately edit its website to more accurately describe the fee structure. (You can tell that I'm a retired newspaper reporter.)

So, stay tuned. We shall see if they take my advice,

IN made the same "mistake" on Twitter earlier today:

@icenetwork
... Team Challenge Cup is not included in the Season Pass. You have to purchase a separate subscription to watch it.

I am not a subscriber, but this snafu makes me cringe.

Yes I don't really see what the hold up is-- do they really believe voter fraud occurred on a mass scale over the Team Challenge Cup of all things? And how long can this realistically take to check for? I don't know if I'd call it disrespectful, but very odd? Absolutely.

I won't go so far as to use the word "fraud," but TCC already acknowledged that it believes that automated voting took place via Pollcaster. Thus the decision to suspend the voting and to change the platform to Woobox.
Whether the e-mail requirement of Woobox prevented further irregularities seems unclear.
And whether it really was possible to reliably distinguish and weed out automated Pollcaster votes seems unclear.

At this point, no matter who wins, I never will be convinced that TCC handled the voting competently.

Turned on my phone after a sixteen-hour flight to find this in my inbox. To say I was unimpressed was an understatement.

There should be a mass PSA throughout the skating community to NOT buy this subscription, though obviously there's no way to get to everyone. (Maybe TSL?)

I hope IN follows through on what they told Moxiejan. I fully intended on buying an IN subscription next year--although it doesn't work the best all the time, I find it easier than other links most of the time--but the fact that they are basically trying to scam us makes me far less likely to do so. Sure, I don't respect Walmart, but it's cheaper for me to shop there than anywhere else most of the time (and I'm a poor grad student.) But if I don't respect a company's methods AND they charge me more than their competitor? No thanks.

I hope IN follows through on what they told Moxiejan.

The fact that NO change has been made to the event page, and also that we haven't gotten a revised email, is making me start to think that the person on the phone was lying to me. If any season subscribers have already paid the $9.99, hang on to all paperwork and demand a refund.

I just tweeted Phil Hersh about the subscription issue. Let's see if he makes some noise about it.

No offense to Hersh, but I would not count on anything coming of it.

IN is one of his new employers, so I would not blame him if he chose to steer clear of raising questions in public re an IN issue.

I hope your own considerable efforts to rectify the "mistake" will prove effective.

Of course. I totally forgot about that. I do have faith in his honesty, however. Maybe he can have a private effect. Really, why would IN risk its future reputation on such a poor PR move? I can't believe their overall profitability depends on fooling loyal subscribers into paying twice for such a minor event.

:sad21: Noooo not Liza :( I was so looking forward to seeing her there!

Who does this mean will be asked to replace her?
