2016 Team Challenge Cup - Gen Info/Pre-chat

I forgot to vote but it does’nt really matter. I could have taken anyone, great skaters all of them. Just hoping I can watch it somewhere :)

Ugh, can this event start already!!!? I want to see Jason's new sp!!

Exciting! What’s his music?

Are the captains doing some skating as well?

it makes sense that Rad would win. She is from a bigger nation, bigger skating nation, more well known world wide, a top contender and lets face it will help sell tickets more than the alternative. i think people need to realize that peole on GS are a different breed - very vocal, passionate andknowledgeable but the bigger world does not have the keen awareness we have nor are they as p assionate orknowledgeable about lesser knowns. it would be like the skating fan - they know the big names mahyhbe in hockey but no t often the fine nuances and upcoming stars

Sure and I think we all get that, but then why have a fan vote at all? I don't think we have enough information to really say what happened for sure (perhaps Radionova actually won fair and square and a large number of votes for Angelina were actually fraudulent- it isn't impossible) but as others have said, the non transparent and borderline incompetent way in which the vote ended up being conducted is extremely unfortunate and doesn't inspire confidence. If they just wanted to have/invite 'the best' skaters, thinking that was how to sell tickets, then by all means they should have done so and saved everyone the trouble of voting for something that actually wasn't a vote. It feels like they tried to have their cake and eat it too- drum up interest through a fan vote, but if the person who isn't the best is winning the fan vote, scream fraud so they can sell more tickets.

Except that it was very, very obvious that fraud was involved when we were able to see where the majority of Angelina's votes were coming from. And I don't believe for a second that those people just gave up trying to game the system when they threw out the first batch of votes & switched to a different voting platform. Look, I'm a fan of Angelina myself, but it would have been more unfair to allow the fraudulent votes to stay and keep the rightful winner from participating. And unfair to all of Team Europe & the fans who wanted to see Elena. And I see nothing wrong with the organizers doing exactly what they said they were going to do - throw out automated votes. Yes, the fan vote backfired and I hope they never do it again, but what's done is done, and the reaction would have been much worse if they did nothing about the fraud.

Let's face it, if the organizers just ended up picking whoever was "the best," Kolyada would be competing and not Kovtun.

Well, I guess I'm not going to be watching. IN just announced that it's not included in the subscription. You have to pay another $10 for it! :dev2: Talk about a weird and honestly really frustrating decision. And I was looking forward to it...

Evgenia's appointment is what makes it looks like they just decided to do what they wanted and go with who is best, at least with the ladies for Team Europe. They could have just as easily named Elena to replace Liza since Elena was the second highest ranked European woman behind Liza. That removes Elena from the fan vote and puts that between Angelina and Evgenia. I will give u that voting looked shady between Elena and Angelina, but Evgenia was not even in the ballpark with the votes. She always seemed to be around 15%. I think it is harder to claim fraud there and throw out votes sufficient to pull Evgenia ahead of Angelina. They took the easier route to get what they wanted, two top level skaters, including the reigning GPF, European, and World Champ, to draw crowds in. Elena wins fan vote and they used their replacement clause discretion and Evgenia is named to replace Liza.

They also sent a poor message to fans who wasted their time voting and more importantly to a 17 year old girl from a small skating federation. What happened is not the fault of any of these young ladies, but it is particurly sad for Angelina.

For the SP comp, the placements of all three men and all three ladies on each team count. Not just the top two.

And the placement points are awarded within each flight.
So the Team Captains :) will be strategizing/guessing :drama: as to how best to assign their men and ladies to the three flights.

Emphasis added below.

Day #1 - Friday, April 22 – Men’s and Ladies Singles –Short Program Competition
o Each Team will decide their entries in order of #1-#3 and submit them in closed envelopes ...
o Skaters #1-3 will skate (3 teams) earning points in their flight for their team; Skaters will earn points for first, second or third (i.e. 12, 10, 8 points)...
o Singles Team Short Program Winners will be crowned based on the total team points, an aggregate of the points earned by a team in each flight ...

... Have a certain number qualify directly according to certain rules & then have a "pool" of eligible candidates (also according to rules) from which the the captain's picks can be made.

The TCC rules for qualification did take this two-pronged approach.

Most of the skaters qualified directly:
ISU World Standings on Jan 1 were the basis for invitations for two men, two ladies, both pairs, and both dance couples on each team.

For the third man and third lady on each team, the designated pool of skaters eligible for nominations for fan voting were 2016 Worlds entries.

So your concept already was followed.
If you want to adjust the criteria for direct qualification and for fan voting, that is another story.

For those discussing fraud:

The only "fraud" during the TCC fan voting was automated voting -- automated voting for any skater from any country. (For example: In the Team Europe ladies voting, I do not believe for one second that only one skater received automated votes.)

Like it or not, manual votes -- no matter what the reason behind them -- were not "fraud."

In the real world (unrelated to skating), politics makes strange bedfellows. In some cases, "the enemy of my enemy is my friend." Votes for that kind of reason are not "fraud."

What is a "flight"?

Does this mean that the three ladies designated #1 by each team will skate against each other, and earn 12 points or 10 points or 8 points. (That's one flight.)

Then the designated #2 skaters go. Etc. (?)

That is intriguing, if that's right. So for instance, Team Asia does not want to waste Miyahara against Medvedeva, so, guessing that Team Europe will put Eugenia 1st, Team Asia will put Satoko in the number2 flight instead. But then Team Europe, anticipating this, could save Medvedeva for the second flight instead to knock out Satoko and let Radionova contend with Asia #1 (Hongo)...

This is getting crazier and crazier.

Yeah, I hear you. I actually think this outcome was a little unfair to her.

Do you not think it would have been more unfair on her to realise that the only reason she was voted in was because she was not Russian and a certain demographic wanted to keep Russian ladies out? If anything, that would make me feel worse.

Crazy, indeed!
This would mean that if one of the flights got the top three scores, the skater who placed third would earn fewer points for his/her team (8) than the skater who placed 4th, which by default would be 1st for another team (12 points). And if another flight had the three lowest scores, the skater who was 7th would get 1st-place points (12)! :noshake:

Yes, both of your posts reflect my understanding of the flights at TCC. (I don't have any inside scoop; I'm just going by what's in the Announcement.)

Lots of unpredictability b/c each team captain will be making assignments to the flights without knowing what the other team captains are planning.

Another aspect of the flights is that each Warm-up Group will have both men and ladies -- e.g., Warm up Group I will have all the #3 slotted Ladies and Men; etc.
Could lead to some fun/sweet moments. For instance, if Jason and Gracie are assigned to the same flight, maybe we'll see them sharing a couple of their supportive hugs during the warm-up. :)

I really don't know if I should post this, but I just signed into Facebook there now, and one of my friends (but not one that I know through skating; I know this one through motorbike racing) has posted a link to a story about Spokane.

I won't post the link here, as this is a family website. But the story is from the website of Maxim magazine. And it is about the staff in some coffee shops wearing, well, very little. (Just their underwear).

But, about a minute into the accompanying video, one of the council representatives is talking about it. And, he looks a little bit like our very own Spokane resident, CoyoteChris!

So, if anybody is going to the TCC, just be prepared that you might see more than you bargained for when you go to get a coffee.

CaroLiza_fan

I saw this on the news....there was a flap some time back about some coffee shop barristas wearing small bikinis....the deal here was the advertising sign reveiling too much skin where school kids could see it from their buses...the ladies in the stand can wear what they want. But I am sure many dont wear much. I never have been there, or "hooters" for that matter. Or any "girley show" . They kind of make me sad, actually. But then go to many US beaches and see what you see. Or Europe's clothing optional beaches....and I have seen some very "interesting" lady's skating outfits. So I guess I cant throw the first stone....

This I actually really like... it could indeed lead to some nice moments :)
