Wakaba Higuchi

Congratulations Wakabby!

Is she going senior next season?

I believe she is, since she has spent two seasons on the junior season. I don't see why not either, since Japan is abundant with many junior skaters! I hope she does, anyways.

Wakaba's skate today was absolutely marvelous! I always had thought of her as a dull performer with excellent jumps and decent SS, but she changed my mind through this competition.

It's clear how much she worked on the presentation side of her skating. Her facial expressions are much more lively now.

Oh boy. If Wakaba is going senior, Mao has a lot of work to do. Satoko, Rika, and now Wakaba are competing with her. Yikes.

I agree that she's improved, and I hope she can still improve in the future! I recall some interview where she mentioned really wanting to work on her pcs, so I'm glad audiences are noticing :)

Considering she beat both Rika and Mao at this past nationals, she could possibly make the world team next season if she continues putting out strong performances.

I love the way she holds herself and her style. It can be even better, but it is unique.
Japan has a lot of Lovely skaters but only Wakaba has the fire and the power.

I agree, and that's part of the reason why I liked her so much from when I first saw her. She seemed so different from the skaters on team Japan, and it was like a breath of fresh air n

Congratulations Wakaba! :hap10:

At last year's JW FS, the commentator (I think it was Kurt?) said Wakaba's style is pure and honest that has a sense of pride. I think it became much more apparent in FS this season, I just love the sort of reserved fierceness she carries in FS, while her SP is more like a burning fire itself (which I also love). Frankly, her style screams 'I'm the Queeeeeen!' to me.

It seems she said at K&C "at the World, if not at the World Junior..." Not all of the great skaters won JW, just like Liza. Can't wait to see her in the senior field next season!

Although she didn't win the gold, she delivered a great performance. Her expressions was much better than during the JGP, and the program did not seem as empty as before. I love her fire and power.

she tweeted "去年とメダルの色が一緒のはずなのに一緒に見えない。 そしてぜんぜんくやしくない。あ、そっか、次が本番か。笑"

If I'm not entirely wrong she said: the color of the medal last year is supposed to be the same as this year's medal, but I can't see it as the same (color). And I'm not regretful at all, oh yeah, next is the real thing (probably talking being a senior). I believe all the challenges this season will be a great experience for her. Looking forward to see her new programs next season.

I'm glad she's not too upset about getting the same podium placement. It's an accomplishment to even medal at junior worlds, let alone twice in a row! This season was full of hardships and high emotions (flashbacks to the JGP Spain medal ceremony :dbana: ) but I can't wait for wakaba to go senior next year and make a splash on the Grand Prix! I'm sure the JSF will give her spots :agree:

CBC just broadcast junior ladies, and said that Wakababy is skating through music. I strongly disagree with that. Wakababy is one of those special skaters that has innate musicality. IMO, the best in terms of musicality among all Japanese juniors (that is why I like her). And she will prove that in her future skating career. just wait and see how that will unfold.
All the criticism Wakababy get in terms of artistry currently is mainly due to her a bit chubbier, non-classical/ideal body type. She actually has musicality and charisma in spades.

I completely agree with you. Wakaba has tons of musicality, she interprets the music well and attacks every single element of the program with fierceness and determination. The fact that she's not a slender, ballerina-type skater doesn't mean she's not artistic. Quite the contrary, I think she has a very personal and distinctive style and I can't wait to see how she developes in the future!

I haven't seen the CBC broadcast yet, and while I agree that her programs this past season didn't allow her to express herself to her full potential, I think that she performed the heck out of her FS at Jr Worlds, more than I've ever seen her do it before! When I first saw it, I was quite unimpressed. But after watching her skate to it last week, I really thought she did a good job selling her program :)

Also, might I add that where Wakaba lacks in the 'typical skating ballet dancer' type figure that often results in automatic PCS, she has in the speed and power in the ice. She is one of the fastest, most grounded junior skaters I've seen in a while, and it's amazing to see the power and control she has on the ice :)

Proverbly so. It felt like she was going to turn senior at 2016-17 season, and had aimed at Junior title this year.

What do y'all think are her chances at 2018 Olympics?
I hope she makes the team but I also want Rika, Satoko and Mao on the team.....

Regarding 2018 Olympics, it's hard to say whether she'll make the team, especially with Mao's plans to compete until then. I see some people saying she'll even be on the World team this coming season because she beat both Mao and Rika during nationals. It's hard to say at this point. I see her doing well next season as long as she has good programs. These programs worked to an extent, but I'd love to see her find some music that goes along with her speed and power.

The truth is there are too many good Japanese skaters, all of whom I want to win the Olympics.
