Ashley Wagner

Congrats theskatingbutterfly! :) Thanks for the report! The more I read/ see about Ashley's personality, the more I adore her! I hope your boss will also get on team Wagner after this

Lol, that's NEVER gonna happen.. we actually have quite the fun time going back and forth with this. But I get the whole summer. And I was so excited to get to tell Ashley "I get the whole summer to smack talk him because, well, you know, you rocked." She just smiled. I still don't think it's completely hit her.

Oh. My. Goodness.

Saturday, May 14th, 2016 will be a day I never forget. I met Ashley (and Adam) for the first time!!
So can I just say a few things-
She is the SWEETEST person. I am very active on twitter and she recognized me! She said "Oh my gosh, it's so nice to finally meet you! I was looking forward to this!" She is so genuine and drop dead gorgeous. I mean, I knew she was gorgeous, but in person, just WOW

She totally was so gracious because I had a lot of stuff for her to sign and gave her a birthday present so I took a lot of her time. She gave me two giant bear hugs and was just amazing! My little 8 year old student went up with me and competed for the first time the following morning (she got 1st!) and when I told Ashley that she was competing for the first time the next day, she gasped and asked "Are you super nervous?" My student, who was very shy at first with her, nodded, and then Ashley got down to her level. looked her in the eye, and (I'm loosely quoting on this one) said, "well, tomorrow when you step out on that ice, you're gonna be even more nervous than now, but just remember when you take your start, that you love what you do and that no matter what, that is what matters." She was so incredible to her!! And then she went back to get a picture signed that had both Adam and Ashley and when she left Adam said "take that with you tomorrow, it will bring you good luck!"

My student absolutely ADORES them now, and Ashley even told her congrats when I tweeted the results. Moments like this, this little 8 year old girl will never forget.
There were many other things to note- Adam was incredibly gracious when I was fawning over Ashley and giving her birthday presents
- Ashley totally got in on a present for my boss at my rink who is team Gracie, and signed a pic for him saying "To my biggest fan ;)"
- I competed a month ago, and my nails were loosely inspired by Ashley's nails at Worlds, and when Adam asked me if they were inspired by hers, I tried to deny it but he didn't believe me! I gave up and said yes, and Ashley told me to get them done exactly like hers for my next one, because then I would skate perfect. I'll think about it!
-They are both tiny
- Ashley gets nervous for shows, especially Hip Hip Chin Chin because it was her competition program
And then, I got to watch them perform!! It was a local ice rink, and I was sitting on the ice (2nd row so not the best view) but WOW up close and personal!!
Ashley did "dangerous woman" and "Hip Hip Chin Chin"
WOW WOW WOW WOW WOW WOW WOW!!! Sass, perfect jumps, FACE, spins, SHE SKATES SO FAST, just amazing!!

This is an experience I will never forget. Ashley is probably the sweetest figure skater I have ever met. Wow.

Wow this is amazing!! What a moment! :)
It reminds me when I met Ashley at TEB she was absolutely adorable. I was with a friend who's a HUGE fan of Ashley, always saying that she is her inspiration and she got so emotional that she couldn't talk and I had to tell her feelings to Ashley, whose super cute answer gave my friend her voice back  then she gave her our present and they hugged .
It was a dream moment, and just a few hours before the FP, proving Ashley's kindness :)

"This man deserves all the credit in the world. I came to him in 2013 a wreck, in need of a coach, a training regimen and a change. Somehow he saw some potential in me, when most people had written me off. I am a very stubborn athlete, and the harder I push he pushes back even harder. He has taught me what it means to be a professional, an athlete and most importantly, he has taught me how to be in control of what I am doing. He renewed my love for this sport and has shown me that I have so much to learn. I started with him thinking that 2014 would be my last year, and now three seasons later, I am a world silver medalist with no end in sight. Thank you Raf for being the coach I needed you to be. I am so grateful and owe so much to you. To have the rest of the world acknowledge it as well makes me so happy. This man is Coach of the Year, and he so deserves it. Thank you Raf!!"

A very touching message! Congrats to Raf!
I am happy that Ashley is with the perfect coach for her.

This great article nominating Ashley for Person of the Year appeared in Ice Network a couple of weeks ago. I hadn't seen it until yesterday, and I thought maybe others haven't seen it and would also enjoy it. The writer explores a different perspective of Ashley: not just as the fighter, the scrapper, the underdog who has to prove people wrong about her. But as the outsider who never felt she belonged. "I was never that girl," she said.

"Part of what my strength is as an athlete is that I'm a performer," she said. "I draw on real emotions. I'm not an emotional person: I was a military kid; it's ingrained in me. On the ice is the one place where I'm so much more vulnerable. If I'm going through something, on the ice is where I feel it and experience it the most. I have to be very conscious of where I am mentally and emotionally. Things help me from beyond on the rink."

This interview is about US pair team, Marissa Castelli and Mervin Tran, but Ashley's lucky dress originally Marissa's costume is mentioned, so I bring it in. :)

Q: Marissa, you’ve become known for your costumes. This year, you famously loaned one of your old costumes to Ashley, and it brought her great luck at Skate Canada and Worlds. What designers do you work with on your costumes, and how much input you have into the designs?

Marissa: I work with Yumi Couture for my costumes. I actually do have a lot of input in the designs. Yumi [Nakamura-Barnett, costume designer] is amazing. She takes my design and then she draws it out, and re-does it how she thinks it should be, and we always get to a finished product that’s amazing. Phenomenal beadwork. I never could imagine half the stones she puts on my dresses and where to put them, but she does it. I have a lot of pressure on me this year to create a good short program [costume], but I think we’ve got the money-winning costume already down. It’s a pretty good idea.

Ashley took a big tumble at one of the shows for All That Skate and then proceeded to share it on social media with everyone:laugh:

One of my favourite things about Ashley is that she doesn't hold back and can make fun of herself, so endearing

For sure, I love that about her! She's a good role model to young skaters for that reason alone, along with many other reasons, Of course. :)

If you haven't seen, Ashley posted her new footwork sequence from her new long

It's absolutely lovely!! It seems edgy, more lyrical and she's taking her time. She also tweeted saying "This is completely different for me" so I'm guessing this program is gonna be more emotional and less sassy (which I'm super excited to see her do!)

Any guesses on music?

Ooooh, I love :luv17:   Ashley's footwork for her LP! I like the beauty and flow of it. Is that a hint of an Ina Bauer I see? (I am clueless.)

:thank: for posting this, skating butterfly. So fun, and so exciting to see her working on this now. It's fun hearing Shae-Lynne's voice too. They are a team made in heaven.

I haven't a clue as to a music guess. But I have a feeling it'll be something she can sink her emotional chops into. If that isn't mixing metaphors too much.

Have you written this one yet? I'm looking forward to it. I thought your analysis of Ashley's Worlds fs was very good.

Awww, thank you!! Yes I will be soon - I've been busy busy lol. I'm competing in LA next weekend (and will be skating where Ashley trains, maybe I'll run in to her again??) and I've been getting ready for it. Probably once I get back I can "sink my teeth" in to it.

What was Ashley's super cute answer? If you don't mind telling us. :)

Sorry skylark I took so much time to answer you. :o:
I don't remember exactly but they exchanged words about the daily struggle of being a lefty skater , and some things about following her dreams and never give up no matter what. :)
She should be in Marseille at next GPF and we'll be there, we crave seeing her skate live again!

And btw, I CAN'T WAIT to know what her new programs will be. She's sustains the suspense every day that's almost unbearable :tantrum:
