Javier Fernandez

I agree that his programs for the 2013-2014 were not impressive, especially if compared to "Chaplin" from previous season. They could have just made some changes in "Chaplin" choreography and kept it rather than that new Olympic freeskate. I wonder who made that choice? In my opinion experienced choreographers like David Wilson at least in most cases will make much better music choices than e.g. a skater, any skater, LOL.

Yes, they should have kept "Chaplin" with some variation, after all, Yuzu kept his PW SP and he won OGM with it.

I read somewhere Peter Gunn was David Wilson's idea and Brian Orsor liked it. Javi was no sure about it and it took some while for him to get to the program.

Javier almost always has two new programs at the beginning of the season and he sticks with those programs. I also wasn't a huge fan of the Peter Gunn FS, but Wilson said in some interview that he always tries to develop a skater artistically and see what the skater can do. So probably Peter Gunn was good in terms of development. I guess he should have two new programs next season as well, but I kind of think that going back to either the SP or the FS of this season might be a smart move in the Olympic season. Both programs were great.

LOL, ok, so mistakes happen, I think though that after "Guys and Dolls" there will be programs that really suit Javi and favour his wonderful dancing ability.

Yes, Javi has collaborated with David Wilson for 5 seasons and DW should know very well what suits Javi the best. Personality-wise, they mingled with each other very well:cool:

David has done quite a few programs for Javi that I really like, Guys and Dolls and Chaplin in particular:luv17:

IIRC, in the TSL interview DW said that the best work a choreographer does with a skater usually starts to come after collaborating for a few seasons, because by then the choreographer would know the skater really well.

What DW said does make sense. I usually hate Lori Nicole's recycled/cookie cutter programs, but what she gave to Caroline in her later career are brilliant, such as Bolero. I also love D10's Silk Road free skate.

lol Scott sprayed a mouthful of water all over Javi:laugh:
(Well Javi got many buckets of water poured over his head when he did the SuperJavi exhibition program so he's probably quite experienced )

When they toured together in Japan, Alex always poured a "huge" bucket of water on Javi in his Super Javi program. Some fan made a GIF displaying all the watering cast, Mura being the kindest one, only a tiny waterfall with a coffee mug:laugh:

some clips for off-season:

side by side twizzles

Spread Eagle + 4 loop + fall

Cool! When was this? In competion practices he is doing strictly only stuff related to the programs at hand that no elements are not included.

It'll be interesting to see whether the guys will come out guns blazing with 2 + 4 quads... Javi has obviously two good ones, but I've been wondering about a third which might be needed in 2016-7 season already...

Support note for ISU Council elections from Japan - Maria Teresa Samaranch was selected, but Daniel Delfa not.

He posted this practice clip on his face book on March 3, 2012. Brian usually lets his students try new jumps in summer when they are in good shape. He did mention that Javi could land 4 loop pretty consistently in practice. If there is a need to up the technical content, I think that Javi shall have no problem to add 4 loop in his Free Skate.

I remember seeing a video of his Spread Eagle + 4 loop + fall from early 2012. I don't remember whether it's the same video or a different one, though.
So far he's always maintained that he doesn't think it's necessary to do this in competition so I doubt he is planning to add one going into the 2016-2017 season. It's important to stay as healthy as possible so I would understand no matter what he decides regarding how many quads he wants to do.

Javi said that he does not like practicing tons of quads per session. Brian also said that Javi doesn't even do quads everyday--there are times when he only do quads every other day, or something like that.
If Javi is going to do a 4 quad FS, they'll probably have to change his practice pattern a little bit, and I guess that's a decision that needs to be made carefully, as Javi is no longer one of the younger guys in this sport.

A coffee mug???
So his cast mates took turns to pour water over him? Must be some really fun time, I guess:laugh:

If his main competitor Yuzu does a 4 quad FS next season, Javi may have to up his game, like he did later this past season.

When they upgraded his SP to 2 quads, Javi said it was tough to do a 2 quad SP in practice so his team changed his practice routine so as he could get used to it. I cannot imagine how tough the training for 6 quad programs would be. The sports has gone way more crazy :drama:

I agree - if Yuzu does 2 + 4 then the others have to follow, including Javi... However, the effects of the long healing period are unpredictable in Hanyu's case...

More quads=More options for injuries, so hope he can keep himself injury free:palmf:.

Javi said in the recent IFS interview that the key for him to stay healthy is "knowing his limits and when to give his body a rest". He would not push his body too hard when he is exhausted or burned out; he will tell his coach that he would stop practicing quads for the day.

Many thanks, tzazu, for sharing the photos, which I assume were took in Japan Open 2015.
