Jason Brown

Oh for the love of Plushenchrist, what the in blue bloody hell is going on in this thread?! Do I have to go round and shake all of you?!

I can't believe people are STILL harping on about the Broadmoor withdrawal! IT'S A FREAKING SUMMER COMP. Skaters can and do withdraw from these events without reason ALL THE TIME. It doesn't mean anything!

As for his social media: he doesn't NEED to give us anything. If he's decided to change things up about what he posts, so be it! That's his business, not ours. If there's less frequent fan interaction, I would say we can point it squarely at the stalkers: one who took advantage of that interaction to bombard him, the other who tagged him in posts threatening to kill herself. If he's been spooked by that, I don't blame him.

I'm happy to see him at Skate America, and I'm glad he gets to go to NHK this year, and see his Japanese fans. They will be very happy bunnies, I'm sure!

Skate America and NHK :yes2: :hap57:

I became a fan of Jason's because of his skating and am very much looking forward to seeing these programs again after they've had time to marinate a little longer (and to see what technical improvements he makes over the summer):

Appassionata

Scent of Love

Go Jason! :hap10:

Dick Button once said (probably about Michelle Kwan) that you could take a picture of any moment in her program and it would be beautiful. I think the same can be said about Jason.

He chose this stunning picture posted originally by one of his Japanese fans to tweet about NHK2016:

That is truly a gorgeous photo. What initially drew me to Jason's skating was his breathtaking line and musicality. I am glad his new programs this season emphasize both qualities and like you I'm looking forward to seeing how those programs develop this season, not the least at Skate America!

By the way, Johnny Weir made a similar comment about Jason, but the reference is to Sasha Cohen:

So sad about Josh. It is hard to think that he and Jason won't be pushing each other in the run up to these Olympics. But perhaps, like Rohene, he will someday skate in shows and use his talents to create beautiful programs for others. Or maybe he'll do something with that pretty voice and musicality - I sure hope so.

For the record, Jason did tweet about Skate America and NHK, and both within 24 hours of the assignments being released. Whatever reason he has for being less present on social media, it doesn't bother me too much. Social media started exploding when I was in college and the older I got, the less open and engaged I got online. It happens. It was Jason's infectious joy on the ice that made me a fan first and foremost, and as long as he's got that I'll be a fan.

I think these are GREAT assignments for him - I'd guess they were the two he wanted and he's got a shot at the podium with both. I'm so glad I ended up getting tickets for Skate America. :hap36:

All that being said, I do hope he shows up at Glacier Falls. The off-season is already getting to me a bit.

We know Joshua is not as active on social media as Jason, but I do hope he saw/someone showed him Jason's beautiful, heartfelt message. Made the tears come even faster.

Well Josh's mom saw it I (thank you Tavi) so he should get the message unless she thinks not to, and i know you will agree in trusting mommy's judgement in this case.

Also, along the same vein, Doug Mattis commented on it and said it was an example of why both Josh and Jason are roll models for his students.

As sad as it it, my better half my have put it best with "Oh well. He wasn't Plushenko" and I kinda have to agree... I don't want him to be a cyborg in pain. Let him have fun creating and mentoring. I think Josh still has a very bright future in the sport - in part because he has shown wisdom in not pushing his body too far.

The skating lesson had a little bit of gossip on TSL.

Jason is training with Frank through glacial falls. But they did not even try to stir the pot about him possibly changing flat out. Basically they talked about being a good growing step to do some stuff on their own (ask skaters) and complimented Kori on encouraging skaters to go out and learn form other coaches. They did mention the loss of Vincent as a... well loss, but again, not a pot stirring way, just a career opportunity way. Overall very complementary and respectful.

Also, gossip is that Tomoki Hiwatashi could be joining Team Koro.

Kinda wish they would have commented on Cecily Morrow a bit more in terms of 7k... but ok.

What is up with everyone's obsession with Frank Carroll?

I mean yeah if it helps him get the quad that's great but jeez you'd think that guy has some kind of automatic magic touch the way people carry on about sending skaters to him.

OK, this is great, this is what we all thought (and thanks for the direct link, wish I knew how to do that ;) ), and why do we need to learn it through TSL? Not cool, guys. IMHO, and I realize my opinion means bubkes, but this is the internet, which means I get to express it.

I don't know why everyone loves Mr. Carroll, but they do, so from politicking it's a good place to go. He sure as heck isn't going to go to Raf, that's a bad fit, and I don't want him with Tom Z.

Very interesting too about the promotion for Coach Vincent, I did not understand the forces at play there.

And .....Tomoki? Well he is from Chicago. If this is true, :yahoo: I know everyone is all about the Israeli kid, but at Junior Worlds, I loved Nic Nadeau and Tomoki the best. Even if I can't *stand* Chaplin programs....

I will never forgive Tom Z (and even more so now), but...it might be all right. Jason is old enough and strong enough that I think he would be able to work with Z without things going totally pear-shaped. Of course, however, Z may not feel like giving one of Max's direct rivals better jumps. For which I honestly would not blame him.

However...there is another coach at the World Arena who has recently had a lot more free time come available...one whose own jump technique was impeccable...

...what am I thinking? They are too close, it probably wouldn't work. But could you imagine how cute they'd be in the kiss and cry?

His success in skaters since he coached Linda Fratianne to the 1980 Olympics in Lake Placid.

I always was under the impression that his strength was in "packaging" skaters who were already had the jumps. I don't mean to ruffle feathers here, but no way would Timothy Goebel (2001-2003) and Evan Lysacek (2005-2010) had the success they had if they hadn't gone to Frank Carroll. You could also make a similar argument about Denis Ten.

What I don't like about Frank Carroll is his tendency to have his skaters use Lori Nichol as a choreographer. But that could be a completely separate thread.

Would Christy Krall, assuming she would be interested, be a good choice to help Jason with his jumps? Isn't she the Dartfish Queen in Colorado Springs?

Are you talking about Joshua? I'm not sure how good his coaching abilities are right now.

But you know what is considerably more doable? Him and Damon Allen with Lukas in the kiss and cry at Europeans. I believe Latvia got two spots for next year.

I always assumed that Frank Carroll was responsible for Denis Ten's beautiful 3A and quad; Misha Ge's 3A during the 2015 season was really improved; Daisuke Murakami seems to have good quads. If Frank Carroll was responsible for helping these guys improve or master these jumps, I think he is a great choice to help Jason solidify his 3A and master the two quads he's been working on. It's also possible that simply being around some or all of these guys training quads might abe helpful for Jason's growth. Interestingly, though, D10's Wikipedia site lists Rafael as one of his current coaches, something I was unaware of, so who knows whether Rafael or Frank has had more influence on D10's jumps. I guess we'll see this fall how much impact FC has on Jason. I still find it very odd that we found out about this through Instagram posts and TSL and not in a more direct way, but oh well.

Should be an interesting season - I just hope Jason stays healthy through all of it! Wish we already knew his Challenger / Sr B assignments, but his two GP assignments look quite tough to me. Aside from not knowing what Jason himself will look like, at SA he will be going up against Adam, Boyang, Shoma, D10, Kovtun, and other strong skaters: he could beat or be beaten by any of them although beating Shoma and Boyang will be challenging. At NHK he will face Yuzuru, Nathan, and Kolyada, and quite a few others who could probably beat him on a given day. I thought StitchMonkey's analysis in one of the other threads regarding the assignments of Jason-Adam, Jason-Nathan, and Adam-Nathan was quite interesting. I read somewhere (Instagram comment?) that Nathan is already back training quads.

And this is why Frank seems a kinda odd choice for Jason. Jason is already very well packaged... I don't know what Frank can really do in that department short of a complete teardown and rebuild... which is not needed. Really the only part of Jason's packaging that needs work is his costuming... and I don't now how much Frank is involved in that beyond saying no to things he does not like (I know he has vetoed stuff for Gracie that was already made and assumingly paid for more than once - so he can't be that involved in the process I would think). Really he could get better costuming with Skype and no travel.

I don't think Jason is thinking of coach hoping, but I don't think Frank would be a good contender for a permanent switch both because he is not who Jason needs, but also FRANK WANTS TO RETIRE... and I think people should be allowed to retire. Sometimes I feel like people like Frank need to be reminded that they want to retire.

Honestly, I think the only coaching change before 2018 that would be worth even looking at for Jason would be Brian Orser and The Cricket Club. I am not sure how much more other coaches can really do for him... but training with Yuzu and Javi would be priceless. Especially Hanyu, who seems to think highly of Jason or at least have a soft spot for him... I think he would actually welcome Jason rather eagerly and asking to do side by side quads on a daily basis till he got his way.

I think Tavi does bring something interesting up with the 3A. While I don't think Frank has ever been seen as a quad guru, he does seem to be strong with the 3A. So maybe a 3A boot camp with Frank makes sense. TSL did say that some nice 3As have been spotted out there. Kori has always wanted to make use of other coaches as well, so maybe Frank is just one of the few that is ok with that approach.

I have another theory about why it could be useful though. Maybe it was time to light Jason's competitive fire again and get him training somewhere where he was not king of the hill. Let's be honest, Jason kinda out classes everyone at 7k... an argument (please note I am not making this argument, just acknowledging it from an academic perspective) could be made that he out classes everyone at World Arena even. This could be psychologically about training in an environment with skaters that in some ways outrank him... or at least skating with their legacy. It is often said that training with top skaters really helps, and maybe this is part of what this is about. To take him out of his comfort zone, to remind him of what he still can achieve and fire him up. Skating with Gracie for Frank is a different power dynamic that he is used to, and could be beneficial.

Really though the it likely is just that he wanted to have some fun by the ocean with the Gold sisters while training. Nothing wrong with that, who would not have some interest in working in a beautiful but different location with childhood friends? It just seems so normal that it seems odd to not have mentioned it.

Also... hasn't he worked with Frank peripherally before? His wiki has had Lake Arrowhead as a former training location for ages. I think this was where he went/what he did to work on his 2A way way long ago...

and yes karne, the idea of Josh coaching Jason is adorable.

I'm 100% sure Jason is not going to change coaches, ever. He said it himself in an interview, along the lines of 'Kori is my first coach and she will be my last coach'. He'll never leave her.
