State of U.S. Ladies' skating 2016-17

Yes, the mule kick is very minor on the flip, but on the lutz, Caroline still does her trademark corkscrew mule kick. It bothers me because isn't that what contributed to her needing hip surgery in the first place? :-/

I think she's going to make the 3 loop-3 loop her trademark jump combo

Double axel is much better too. She actually goes in with some speed.

Step sequence is better too

Seems overall faster than before

Comments from Phillip Mills on his work w/ Angela Wang:

... One of the things I loved about working with Michelle Kwan in the programs I choreographed for her was her desire to make the programs exactly as I intended them to be. Her greatness was so inspiring and it is no wonder she is such an iconic figure in our sport.

I just returned from a trip to the Broadmoor to fine tune Angela Wang’s new short program and Max Aaron’s new long program after their wins at the US National Collegiate Championships in Denver.

When I saw Angela skate my “Somewhere over the Rainbow” I was blown away at how beautiful and inspiring it had become. I knew in the moment I could tweak it and make it even better but to have the same feeling I felt with Michelle Kwan lifted my heart and soul.

I have always admired Angela’s skating and felt so excited to be able to create a piece of choreography on a song that is one of America’s hidden treasures. ...

Yeah I agree, there are definite improvements. I was actually impressed that she appeared to have a good entry edge on the lutz, but I think as long as she has that wild kick the jump isn't going to work.

I already wanted to see Angela's Somewhere Over the Rainbow. This makes me want to see it even more.

Philip should take note: don't choreograph a skate for Liza T. Lambiel said of his choreography for her: "well, at least they kept the music.":laugh2:

Isn't the 3loop- 3loop famously hard on the hips as well? I seem to recall that but I could be mistaken.

I have seen this theory before as well. It usually is cited as a big issue for Tara Lipinski.

While on the loop subject, is it true that the quad loop is tough on the body? I seem to remember hearing it called the "hip killer".

Is Kaitlyn Nguyen eligible for JGP?

No. She's too young. She'll be eligible next year.

Based on her and some of the other girls at her level, I'd say we may have an outstanding junior team next year. If I was USFS, I would start really monitoring the top 12 girls in junior, based on club competitions, regionals, and sectionals, and make a huge effort into getting them consistent for next year. I think they only have a few camps during the summer. However, they need to do more to get these ladies ready.

I have been a fan of Angela's since she was a Junior. I hope this is the season where she'll perform as well as she did when I saw this program of hers on Youtube https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=2_BwNmS3dMY

If you visit Polina's thread in Fan Fests, GS member CarolLiza_fan posted a recent filmed performance Polina did to Katy Perry's "Rise" that is gorgeous!! Very avant garde.... Not sure whether this is a competitive program but it is stunning..

I agree it's stunning but I doubt it's a competitive program. It was choreographed by Jody Porter / American Ice Theater. Here is a link to the program on YouTube:

If you click the down arrow in the post you will see that the program was choreographed in celebration of Rio.

Speaking of Polina, for those of you who didn't watch her first program at Sun Valley, it is really stunning:

I don't think there are any jumps, just beautiful ethereal skating. It's available to non subscribers and can even be accessed on iPhone! Polina starts at about 18:40.

Really like the Rise program. It is so different from everything else. The piece at Sun Valley shows the usual Polina.

Thanks for the heads up: I DID see the her Sun Valley skate.. and she danced with Jason!!! The best part... for me anyway.. Regarding "Rise": wonder if Rudy had a hand in the choreography too, tho he isn't mentioned. Something about it reminds me of Anna P .. not sure why

I think if Rudi had been involved with Rise he would have been mentioned. Jody Porter founded AIT with a similar mission to Ice Theater of New York - to promote artistic skating. Here are links to AIT's Facebook page (which has photos related to the Rise program) and its website:

thank you for sharing this! It's stunning. I wish Polina were a better competitor because in my mind, she missed an opportunity to rise above both Gracie and Ashley last year internationally. She has the technical goods to do so and time is running out if she wants to be a frontrunning contender for gold in Korea.

Thanks for sharing - finally got a chance to watch it. This is gorgeous. More of this energy in the competitive programs, please! If she could find a way of combining the asymmetrical, contemporary dance-influenced arm and upper body movements with a level 4 step sequence, you could have Giada Russo-esque levels of musicality on someone who can also bring the high tech content. And that could result in a really new and refreshing style. Push it Polina! I'm a big Wagner fan, but I think P has the goods in a unique way and really want to see it come together for her.
