Jason Brown

Can anyone with an understanding of Japanese help with this tweet from one of the Japanese fan club Twitter accounts. It implies Jason will try quads at Lombardia?

https://twitter.com/JasonBrownFP/status/763918692279209984

I don't know if Jason is talking, or if his fans are talking, but Bing translate says:

"Jason more Narita → via Denver Colorado he returned and joined the US Champs Camp, 8/20, and going up to Lombardy to practice at home. In Lombardy the SP and FS was to say I'm going to put the quad in both. Looking forward! I say "me too! " And Jason [emoji]

So what do we think?

The tweet says that Jason will participate at US Champs Camp on August 20 and will train at his home rink until Lombardia Trophy. He plans on putting quads in both his SP and FS. The fan told him that she’ll look forward to it and he said “Me too!”

In the tweet before that one, he said that he was busy but had fun during his stay and at The ICE. He looks forward to coming back for NHK Trophy. He asked the fan if it’ll be cold in Sapporo so she told him that it won't be so cold in November, it’s colder in Chicago and he laughed.

Thank you, Mikaboo!

Now I hope that the quads don't interfere with the flow of those beautiful programs....

^But if the "new definitions" see Jason sans quad getting scores internationally close to the ones he got at Glacier Falls, then sorry, but it's gone too much the other way. Athletic achievement should be rewarded too, why should those who can jump better be punished because they don't fit the narrow-minded definitions of "artistry"?

Well...it's worth bearing in mind that at TCC, Shoma still beat Jason by a hefty margin because he out jumped him. Given how many people believe in the importance of pushing the sport forward athletically, I really doubt we'll see a situation where a skater like Max or Boyang Jin can never win due to an over emphasis on PCS.

What I hope is that we're moving not towards a system which over rewards "artistry" at the expense of athleticism so that a skater like Max can never win, but towards a system that balances both aspects more fairly, so that skaters who are very strong in one aspect but less strong in another aren't automatically precluded from winning OR automatically bolstered with a stronger score on their weak side. That is, a skater performing a 4Z or 4F or a 3 quad FS shouldn't automatically get a PCS boost, and a skater who ticks all the PCS boxes but falls and has wonky 3As shouldn't get overly inflated PCS or GOE.

We'll see, I guess.

ETA @mikaboo, thanks for that translation! Quick question: could you tell if he was saying that he plans to put quads in the SP and FS at Lombardia, or just that he eventually plans to put quads in both programs?

He said that he plans to put quads in the SP and FS at Lombardia.

Thank you!

Like el Henry, I really hope the beauty of his programs survives the quad attempts....

Don't know why I'm being such a Nervous Nellie, but after him being out for such a long time, I'm so afraid he's going to hurt himself again. Please skating Gods  keep him well! And don't lose the amazing artistry due to the jumps.

Hopefully this is a carefully considered decision rather than sheer impatience on Jason's part. I'm sure avoiding future injury is a huge consideration.

I think they made a big mistake last year, but perhaps having won Nats and having placed fourth at Worlds increased the internal pressure Jason himself was feeling and pushed him to attempt those quads in competition before he was really ready to. If you remember, he started competing them during the summer but didn't even land a clean one in practice until the end of September. So not totally surprising that his two new, difficult programs never looked great, he fell on his quads, his 3As got worse and less consistent, and he ultimately got injured.

I personally wish he'd make sure those improved 3As we saw at GF are still solid in international competition before he adds quads to both programs, but he and his team know better than we do where he's at, and fortunately, Lombardia is really early, so they will have plenty of time to tweak things and / or reassess strategy if necessary for SA.

Mikaboo can you give gives us any insight into if it looks like Jason said he plans to put the quads in or that he plans to try the quads in both? Depending on if he worded it as "put in" or "try" could give some insight... but might be hard given we are playing a game of translation telephone - it may not even have different nuance in Japanese... but if he is wording it that he is going to "put in" the quad as opposed to "try" the quad... that says something about his readiness and his mental state and gives me more confidence.

As for injury and last year... well I think last year was kinda an odd wake up call for Jason. I have gotten the impression for awhile that Jason does not, or did not, really think he is that special...I think he thinks that everything he is told about being special and an amazing skater. The stories like Scott Hamilton asking him "Do you know how special you are?" or Plushinko complimenting his skating in Sochi, I think he always just thought everyone hears those things... and given his long rival relationship with Josh, he likely could have seen Josh being told the similar things, which would make it more likely he would think that it was all normal encouragement. I think it took getting fourth at worlds for him to realize that, yes, he is a step ahead of most skaters, that he does have something special, and he really is only a quad away from the podium at worlds. I am not sure he thought he was actually that close even with a quad before his placement.

So I think last season was kinda his wake up call. Josh said he had some growing up to do that season in terms of training, I think Jason had some growing up to do in terms of his realistic potential - because I think he realized it was higher than had been thinking it was. We did start to see some changes in him after worlds/wtt 2015 season, so i really do think something changed mentally for him. Last season the pendulum swung too far the other direction... with luck this season he will have learned from it and found his equilibrium.

A direct translation without totally ignoring the English grammar would be something like,
At Lombardia, I intend to put in the quad/s in both the SP and FS, he said.
(there is no plural in Japanese so I added the "/s" after "quad")

I think the key word you're looking for is the the bolded part. Click on for meanings.
ロンバルディアではSP、FS両方にクワドを入れるつもりだよと言ってました。

But like you said, it's a translation from English to Japanese to English so something might have gotten lost along the way.

For me it would make sense to put them in at Lombardia. His progression last season was very linear, he improved with each outing. There's no reason to hide the quad away and frankly, he no longer has an excuse to. Not doing one at TCC was fine: he's just coming back from injury. Not doing one at Glacier Falls is fine: it's July, Max didn't do them at Collegiates either. Turning up at Lombardia without one would be much less fine.

I adore his skating and I adore him but he and Kori aren't stupid. He has to get that quad in. The judges adore him and the USFS adores him but their adoration will only last so long if the technical upgrades don't keep coming. We know he can land them in practice, we know he can more than land them in practice, now it's just a case of getting them in the competition. Like Adam's quad Lutz, it doesn't count until it's done in competition. I would love to see him land at least one clean quad at Lombardia, two at Skate America. If he can get that first clean quad out of the way, it will take a huge pressure off him.

Jason's ponytail how-to is here!! https://youtu.be/Ug4hWAAYYt0

OMG thanks TMC, that's hysterical!

Ha - he doesn't mention what it takes to get all that gunk out of his hair! I must confess, I couldn't be bothered - even in my performing days I didn't go through anything like that effort. Thankfully I'm a straight haired girl, because all I can be bothered to do these days is blow dry my hair, brush it, and for ponytails - use a barrette or elastic band. But I'm wondering if some of our curly haired members (I'm looking at you, @Karne) ever go through that much effort with their hair.

NB in case we didn't already know this, Jason confesses here that he's a perfectionist.

I just want Jason to tell us what happened the one time he left his straightener on!!!! WHAT was so awful!!

All I can think of are these bits from that Friends episode where Rachel burns Phoebe's flat down because she left her (very 90s style) hair straightener on :laugh2:

My hair is similar to Jason's but my level of curl depends on the season - wavy in winter and ringlet curls in summer. It's even the same length and close to the same color (mine has more gray). :scowl:  It looks like his hair is more coarse textured though.

Instead of his six steps, I can do mine in two - pull back into ponytail, contain strays with clips. I let the wisps do their own thing. If I had to keep it completely contained like Jason, I would have to use extra products like mousse or gel. The hair glue especially looks to be useful for those wisps that always escape.

There's you doing this :scowl: when talking about your grey hair, and me doing this :thank: and throwing too much money around because my hairstylist just transformed my naturally blonde hair into a fetching grey! I love living in this age where boundaries are truly made because apparently we need something to break :2thumbs:

I am very very impressed by Jason's commitment to his hair, and this is probably overthinking it, but I do believe it's of a piece with his performance: no detail is too small for Jason to notice.

I have naturally curly hair, but I am also a "wash and wear" gal: I could not even be bothered to blow dry (plus blow drying straightens the curls

@TMC, I had to laugh, I am glad that you think gray is fetching:agree: I could not be bothered to color my hair back to its dark dark dark brown state, but I have to laugh when my hairdresser talks about where my hair is "naturally lightening"; I'm OK with going gray:biggrin:

Not for everyday wear for sure - I just brush it out and pull it back. For competition it's a bit more thorough. Unlike Jason, my hair is layered and shaped so I couldn't get away with just straightening the front part - I have to do all of it, and how straight it actually gets is directly proportional to my level of patience, because it can take me twenty minutes to half an hour to straighten my hair. I don't tend to put product into it until after it's styled (usually up in a bun) though, I wonder if that might be worth a try. I'd never heard of hair glue before. My competition hair routine is usually about forty five minutes or so, depending what I'm trying to do with it. I also use glitter hairspray as well as normal hairspray.

I love how he admitted to being a perfectionist as though this was something shocking. My reaction to that was Jason, honey, you don't get to your level without being a perfectionist.

I'm guessing he either burned himself, his hair, or maybe nearly set fire to a towel or something.
