I'm hope I'm not saying anything rude, but I dislike American, Russian and French anthems a lot... It has to do with a fact that I hear these the most and I feel the ''I'm from this country, who is more!'' attitide.

We enjoy, who is more? :rolleye:
"The Russians" need to be united. There are many nations in Russia, different religions. Some nations of Russia are warriors - stubborn people from old times with strict traditions. (Do you remember the wars in Chechnya?..)
If all the nations of Russia would be able to respect each other... it would be not so hard for them to respect all other nations of the world. Russia is the biggest country in the world, with many neighbours.

Many our songs unite us better than our anthem. We have many wise songs, which teach us to be patient. Many of our songs are nearly anthems or marches. We even have songs from animation for children, which we sing nearly like anthems.

this song isn't our official anthem! :rolleye:
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=DNY4wNGXur8
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=1vUK6EZFfj4&t=1m30s
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=5SabJxjhPiM&t=3m12s

Just see!
I'd say the skaters don't do anything extraordinary on this video. The Russians clap so loudly because of the songs.
Both songs are about love. About love in times of war. (Like "Katyusha".)
The Russians believe they should be grateful, if they don't have to die today...
They teach their children to remember and to be grateful...
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=sR2kWY5VMUs
And even Vanagas is happy... Together with us!

The Russians see this, when they hear this song:
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=rRy8Ymu3Q4o
And they also remember, that all the boys, who died, were alive:
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=n12tLeKagw0

the first song (when Tikhonov is alone): "Dark Is The Night" - in English
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=rAmIws4-id8
(you can see the text below the video, if English is not your native language)

When the Russian athletes finally came to the Olympics in Rio, people were singing "Katyusha" for them.
Here is "Katyusha" in English (Katyusha = Ekaterina = Catherine):
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=yyW2WwNre4U
(you can see the text below the video, if English is not your native language)

the Germans (!!) singing "Katyusha"
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=sS3bdNdjh70
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=AbLYk5ILP6w

and our children do sing "Katyusha"
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ivASIwtHALM
(Tolmachevy sisters. They went to Evrovision later.)

It happens, that the adults sing together the songs from animated films for children.
This is our happiness. "The Blue Coach", for example (in English - 2 variants)
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=B3M5W9HE52o
(you can see the text below the video, if English is not your native language)
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=aFeNZVTGI30

And "May there always be sunshine" is a song, which unites children of the world.
As for the Russians... I think it is hard to find a Russian, who doesn't know this song. At least 4 main lines.
(I showed it here)
http://www.goldenskate.com/forum/sh...ional-Anthem&p=1464865&viewfull=1#post1464865

Maybe you could tell about such songs too.
Of course, "Gaudeamus" and "Marseillaise" are extraordinary songs. (though I don't know them)
"Beatles" were a miracle for the world... but it is hard (for me) to remember a song by them with serious and important words...
Maybe... (not by "Beatles") "We are the champions", "Show must go on"...
"Sound of silence" by Simon and Garfunkel is a marvelous song too. Maybe people don't sing it together... But I believe this song can teach listening.
I love the quite variant:

My first thought of music that unites the world - Beethoven's "Ode to Joy!"

I also think of "Edelweiss" from "The Sound of Music" for inspiration.

"I Vow to Thee, My Country" - from the "Jupiter" part of Holst's "The Planets"

Yes, thank you!
"The sounds of music"! :clapper:
We watched it at school. All the songs are good.
"Climb every mountain" is a strong song.
And the heroine isn't sexy. She seems to be a child with an honest face.
That is why we love soviet films and songs. In those films people look like children, "climb every mountain" and believe they should help everyone, who is lazy, to become better.
Of course, the reality wasn't so bright, but even in reality many people were honest children, reading books and climbing mountains...
This is "Do Re Me" (from "The sounds of music") in Russian
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=uNupDGbl6xg

"E.T." and "The toy" with Pierre Richard are as kind and "childish" as the soviet films.
Do you know "The toy" with Richard? (a short clip, the music is from the film)
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=-kG8SvL_nEU
I mean the films, which are not cruel and not filled with "adult jokes" or with mad screams...
Maybe these films come close:
"Back to the future", "Short circuit", "Star wars", "Stop or my mom will shoot", "Junior" (Schwarzenegger), "Those magnificent men in their flying machines...", "Batteries not included" (?)

Now we can mock at our songs about universal friendship
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=2jtE1RZ6Zv8&t=0m20s
But we still love those songs. We still can sing them in earnest.

Sometimes our contemporary children look older than adults...
But adult men can jump happily like children.
These men are not mocking... (though they know dreadful things about the USSR)

Thanks for sharing OP! I enjoyed listening to the Russian songs you posted.

A lot of countries have beautiful hymns or folk songs that are as patriotic or 'uniting' as the national anthems. The UK has loads that I love:
Rule Britania
Land of Hope and Glory
I Vow to Thee, My Country (the Libera version Mao once used is so beautiful!)
Jerusalem

SKorea's 'Arirang' is a personal favorite as well. Renditions I especially enjoy are the orchestral version and this performance of '홀로 아리랑' (a must watch!)

The old Coca-Cola jingle.

"I'd like to teach the world to sing... in perfect harmony."

Thank you!

When I saw the words 'unofficial anthem', 'England & St. George!' I remembered a very nice song about England. I found it, it is said, that the original lyrics were written by Chesterton. I think I found the original:
http://www.cse.dmu.ac.uk/~mward/gkc/books/the-englishman.html
The Russian translation is funny. I don't translate all the words, but it says this:

When St George met a dragon,
He drank some beer first.
He knew fasts and hair-shirt,
But he killed dragons only after some beer.

When St George saw a princess,
He asked to give him porridge first.
He knew the rules and traditions of England,
So he saved princesses only after a breakfast.

When St George will save our England
And will lead us to a battle for freedom,
He will have dinner first and will drink some wine,
His country is wise and kind.

I really like it! :rolleye:

Coca-Cola? :palmf: :coffee:

But I really liked the variant without Cola! Thank you.
I've never heard it before.

For the wild people, who don't know it (if I am not the only one).
I'd Like To Teach The World To Sing (with subtitles)

Oh, but you're missing the classic commercial in which the song was launched.

It is from 1971 and has a weird vibe of hippy and Stepford Wife, and cool young people, some in national dress, stand in perfect lines and sing in perfect harmony.

In the end, if anything will unite us, it is music ... so a big "thank you" for this thread and topic. SO many songs and pieces inspire me... All those mentioned here for sure...

I was reminded of Pharrell Williams "Happy" which is just nuts!! In its joy and exuberance..
The official video got over 800 million views on YouTube so I guess it is universal in that it speaks to a lot of people in the same way crossing all divides...

Same song ... video with dogs and cats... a fun day at the beach!!!

Oh, here it is! A great song! Lennon. Thank you. :ghug:

Maybe I haven't heard it before. I don't know.
To say the truth, I didn't listen to many songs in English. I think the reason is simple: the words were always important for me, but even now I often need to see the text to understand a new song in English. And if I see the text, sometimes I need a dictionary. Or I need some time to stop and to think...
But the text of "Imagine" is very simple, and the music too (easy to sing).

By the way, Youtube understood, what we are looking for. :rolleye: Youtube recommends:

Let's eat bees...

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=6E2hYDIFDIU Frank Sinatra, My Way
I think this song fits us, because I feel this man respects all other people, to him it is natural, that everyone chooses his way. He forgives everybody, so he had few regrets, "too few to mention".

Sinatra's "Strangers in The Night" is only a love song... but it seems to me, that it is one of the most popular songs in Russia (I mean songs in English). Why? Maybe because of this film ("Kin-dza-dza"):
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=P0RhGi-dVvk (a short piece: 45 seconds)
This young man (in the film) is a Georgian, who speaks on languages "continue of which he doesn't know".

Thank you! :clapper: I really like the clip, and it is wonderful, that it has the subtitles.

Actually, I remembered, that Russian police and Russian Army Choir were singing some good songs in English...
"Happy" is one of these songs!

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=LBhlahKwtkg Jingle Bells and Happy New Year

I wanted to mention "Jingle Bells", I think this happy song is VERY popular in many countries, it is easy to sing... Though maybe the list will become too long, if all the Christmas songs will be added to it.

Yes, I found this video, because I wanted to see it. Well, the picture in the beginning is nice, but I see a commercial video. I'd prefer to hear "give them your hand" or "give them bread" (at least).

Anyway, it is very good, that a commercial clip succeeded to turn into a real good song.

And it is good, that some commercial clips look like this.
