Mao Asada

Maybe this has already been posted, but since there are quite a few posts about triple axles, this is a good place for it. Mao's best triple axels from 2002-2016. There are two beautiful triple axels I listed above that are not shown here: the one in the Grand Prix Final SP 2013 and the one in the Grand Prix Final SP 2015.

And here is one that shows Mao's triple axel attempts (landed and not landed) including practice from 2005-2010 but not quite all

Which attempts does my video lack? As far as I know, there is 2007 Japan Open missing because I didn't manage to find the video.

Here is the second part, years from 2010 to 2014: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Fd9GNWKR27c

Mao's second triple axel in the Grand Prix Final 2008 LP, her first triple axel in the Worlds 2009 LP, the second triple axel in World Team Trophy 2009 LP and the second one in the Worlds 2010 LP and I think one of the triple axels in Nationals LP 2008. I haven't looked at 2009-2010 as closely. Maybe the idea was just to show one attempt for each performance? Anyway, this is a great compilation. Thank you very much for making it. In addition, there are so many attempts in practice especially that I have never seen. Thanks for giving the link to 2010-2014.

All the ones you've mentioned were in combination with a double toeloop, and those will have a separate video :).

Glad to hear that! :hap85: I always thought your compilations were dynamite because they include so many gorgeous ones from practice and warm-up. My only gripe was you didn't include the 3A+2Ts. Really look forward to your next video.

Thank you for sharing and uploading of Mao challenging 3A videos. :cool2: I wish her hard work will bear fruit someday.

So, I am putting this out there but I think Mao is a lock for ... running the final lap in the torch relay in the Tokyo 2020 opening ceremony. They won't be able to resist having her there as one of the top Japanese athletes of all time. And for any naysayers thinking "no she can't do that for summer games", I give you Irina Isinbaeva and Maria Sharapova who both ran the torch in the stadium during Sochi 2014 opening.

Who else would LOVE to see our girl Mao in the Tokyo 2020 Olympic opening???

After looking at the power thread, I then read this comment under Mao's Madame Butterfly Worlds 2016 performance, which is representative of the huge contrast between people's praise for the performance and criticism of the scores and the judges low estimation:

i get so frustrated when i think of how horribly underrated she is in the eyes of the world outside japan. i honestly think she's the greatest skater of all time and people will only realise this after she retires.

Many will disagree about her being the best of all time, but I started thinking about this comment when I looked at Mao's deflated scores especially in some of her great performances, such as Worlds 2010 LP, her Sochi LP, Grand Prix Final LP 2007, World Team trophy LP 2009, Olympic SP 2010 and Worlds 2016 LP and Cup of China SP 2015. It reminded me a lot of this site, in which some of the greatest compositions of all time received bad reviews from critics of their time:

http://www.classicfm.com/discover/music/legendary-pieces-critics-hated/tchaikovsky-piano-concerto/

Here is review that it got it wrong on Tchaikovsky's 1st piano concerto: "Tchaikovsky's first piano concerto like the pancake, is a flop."

Carmen: "often dull and obscure"

Beethoven's 9th Symphony: a frightful period indeed, which puts the muscles and lungs of the hand, and the patience of the audience to a severe trial.

Perhaps many people view figure skating as a sport where points can be tallied objectively, but I think of it more in terms of performance art even considering the jumps where flow, symmetry, erect posture and expressive gestures with the body which Mao excels in especially in her best performances with challenging elements like the 3A, 3F / 3L and 3F / 2L / 2L tano. She does these elements in addition to her steps and spins with the grace of acrobatic ballet or like a great pianist's hands dancing expressively and forcefully across the keys. But then the points disappear with what to to my eyes are the tech crew often contradicting the good rotations that I see with my own eyes, especially since the take off point isn't considered. I think this is missing the grandeur of a lush forest to try and see a flaw on a single tree that is often not even seen. Then, it extends to PCS not measuring up to Mao's great depth of expression and massive rink coverage and jump placement which adds so much to the grandeur of her performances with speed gained so easily with no obtrusive pumping and hunching, gliding swiftly like a bird soaring in the sky or a sail boat carving the waves smoothly with a stiff breeze behind it.

Mao shoots for the stars with the idealistic vision she sets for a performance. She often doesn't reach her lofty goal, but when she does she shows she is one of the greatest artists and performers ever who challenges the system that has been set up to assess her (like the composers I mentioned above) by revealing and transcending its limitations and digging deep into people's souls and emotions to reveal an ideal beauty that can't be quantified because it is infinite as the spirit and can't be confined by a finite number which is biased. And for me, she is my favorite performer and skater because of how genuinely she reveals these idealistic qualities.

A slow motion appreciation of the step sequence from Mao's new Bach EX. Just lovely. I like this performance more and more each time I view it, even the costume. http://www.dailymotion.com/video/x4q82m2_浅田真央-mao-asada-チェロ-スイート-スローモーション集-エッジワークが凄い-mad_sport

These light, airy steps are gorgeous! Love the costume and really love the Bach music. It would make me really happy if this were her SP, although the SP looks great too.

According to some reports,

At The Ice Kita-Kyushu, Mao and Midori (Midori Ito appeared in the show as the guest) were asked the question
“What is a triple axel to you?” (What does 3A mean to you?)

Midori’s answer “I had wanted to be a beautiful skater but I couldn’t so I decided to go for technique.”

Mao’s answer “3A is a pressure for me at the same time inspiring me and makes my spirit strong.”
For now….seems like 3A will always be with her…

It breaks my heart she still saying that.

I think Midori's skating skills, jumps and especially her heart and emotions are truly beautiful and powerful, and it is the impact she makes on my the heart and emotions in her best performances and her warrior spirit in challenging the most difficult elements that she reminds me the most of Mao. I sometimes imagine I can feel Midori's inspiration flowing through Mao when I see her skate.

She is so humble. She made it sound like others could also "go for technique" if they chose to. But, the so-called technique that she achieved was something no one before her or after her even came close to achieving.

She may not have been the "princess style" beautiful. But her spunk and charm made her beautiful in the eyes of many.

Oh, midori. Maybe she was no ethereal princess, but her gorgeous triple axel will always be the most beautiful 3A ever done... I mean, her smile alone when she landed it was a 6.0. And this inspired Mao... how beautiful is that?
