State of U.S. Ladies' skating 2016-17

Sorry I guess I'm not allowed to have my own opinion around here?!

Hey, I was referring to her blatantly wrong edge triple flip, nothing against you

For the record, I am in total agreement with your comment about the arms and the work that needs to be done :)

Perhaps you intended to post this elsewhere? This is the US ladies thread.

ETA: here are new SP from Gracie Gold, Vivian Le, and Carolyn Zhang at Golden West:

Thx for posting the Golden West video links here, Tavi :).

It was a pleasant surprise to see Vivian and Caroline competing there.
For those who haven't clicked on the links, I will mention that Vivian competed in Senior Ladies. (Maybe for the first time?? I'm not sure.)

To explain why chuckm's post did belong in this thread:
A comparison of the future of U.S. ladies vs. the future of other U.S. disciplines was the topic of a conversation taking place right above your post. topaz emerald made an initial comment that led to additional posts. chuckm was chiming in on that conversation.

Thank you for the Golden West vids! Caroline looks fantastic! Unfortunately, I'm not loving Gracie's program at all, and I really wanted to. I'm just going to chalk this one up as not being fully developed this early in the season. It really seemed as though she was just trying to get from point A to point B to tick off the elements. Though I do wish she had not gone the tango route again this year, I hope that as this program has time to settle in, she can add some flourishes and depth to the choreography. Time will tell--I'll be crossing my fingers!

Nobody loves Gracie's skating more than I do but, I really don't like the music. This program has got be skated perfectly as the music has very little depth and the choreography is not yet strong enough to carry the piece on it's own. This program reminds me of my first impression of Michelle's "Red Violin" program. I never liked it until Worlds. Hopefully, the judges gave her some good suggestions on how to beef that program up. Of course, I'm sure Frank and Lori will know what to do. I guess I'll have to wait until the first GP.

Gracie: I like the melody of the music, but it does not have the excitement of tango. It showed Lori can only do tango, jazzy and classical, and just recycles programs season after season for the same skater and between different skaters. Has she given Zijun Li tango this season too? Just wondering.

Gracie looks labored. I think she gained some weight over the summer. I thought it might be the camera but Vivian and Caroline looked the same, or even slimmer than before.
Her arm waving is just worse than before. I feel she lacks motivation and does not really enjoy skating, or competing. Some movement, hands touching the ice and then knees down just does not make any sense to me. Does this add more points? I notice some other ladies are doing this too, such as Alina Zagitova, which didn't seem to make much sense either.

Vivian: she looks over better than last season, expect for the smaller jumps. It feels as if she was not really going for the jumps; or she is trading the size of her jumps for consistency? It doesn't look she is losing her jumps any way.

I'm in agreement with most of you about Gracie's new short. I watched it live last night on the feed and wondered why she was wearing the exact same costume as last year if she doesn't want to draw comparisons to last year's tango program. I get she doesn't have a new costume yet so early in the season, but I'm sure she's got a few of her older ones she could wear.

I liked the step sequence, hated the lip/flip and still with the windmill arms. I never really connect to her skating but I do want her to do well b/c she does have a lot of great qualities as a skater. I want her to feel the music more and never get the sense she really connects with the programs when she performs.

Still, it's so early in the season so maybe she will improve as we go on.

Enjoyed Caroline and Vivian. Nice to see Caroline back on the ice, she's a sentimental favorite.

I personally believe that ALL music, no matter how shallow, has some sort of depth to it and its on the shoulders of the artist to make something out of it. And since there are no set rules on artistry and interpretation there is no limit. That's why one piece of music can suddenly be something completely different from one artist to another and never the same. The best, or even the mildly competent, artists should be able to make something, or anything, out of a composition. So if there is no feeling of depth then the fault lays with the artist, and in this case it's Gracie.

As for the choreography, I also think its the artist who is responsible to carry things and not the music. Because how else could Gracie's programs to the lush Sleeping Beauty and majestic Firebird look so dead and lifeless? Everybody thought those pieces of music were strong enough in their own right to carry things no matter how empty the programs were choreographically and were proven wrong. It won't matter how many transitions Lori puts in it because if Gracie can't perform them with any musicality whatsoever then it won't matter.

Of course its only the first performance but it looks like a normal Gracie performance, so I'm not sure how multiple outings would make a difference unless Lori re-choreographs it completely to something different or Gracie suddenly finds artistry. Gracie needs to land all her jumps and then everything about her programs style won't matter. Its her only option at this moment.

Oh honestly, why do you have to bring Russian women into the US thread? If you don't like Gracie or her choreo, can't you just say that? Besides as to new elements, what about the hydroblade and the knee spins on the ice? They weren't well executed, but I don't recall that she's done them in the past.

She had a tough season last year, and she took some time off from training. This clearly was a rough, early skate. Her arms did flail a bit. Her posture wasn't great. But surprise, even if her lutz wasn't great, she didn't fall on her jumps - she didn't even put a hand down on the flip. She moved with some power and commitment to the music. So there were some positives. Let's see where she is in a few months.

Uh, no. Gracie always skate with this "interpretation" and "expression" (or lack thereof because you can't really call what she's doing interpretation and expression).

This is why I don't understand how her PC's get so inflated. Thank god the judging is no longer anon maybe it will lower her pc's due to lack of interp and Coreo :/

Oh.

:drama:

Darling - leaving aside the fact that I nowhere use the words "interpretation" or "expression" in my post - to each his (or her, in my case) own. You're more than welcome to your own opinion, but remember that's all it is - and that it's worth no more than mine or anyone else's.

I just saw that Caroline was on the substitution list for one of the Challenger Series. Looks like USFS is gaining confidence in her.

Really. Then please, show us what you can do with this:

You don't have to skate. Just make something out of it.

How is Karen Chen looking this year? Is she moving up to Seniors? I'd like to see how she and Courtney Hicks are looking.
