I really like it too.

I think ... the program seems purposeful because he is purposeful. His costume is stripped down to basics (compare: bright green shirt, black velvet pants and sparkles for River Dance). He's thinking 18 months down the road to the Olympics. I only hope he starts landing fully rotated quads in competition soon, because if not, I fear he'll be bypassed and I don't want that to happen!

I think overall it is less cluttered, more streamlined - I mean, the program itself as well.

I don't like Writing on the Wall either, but I vastly prefer the music AND the program to Appasionata. I just never got much of a clear story, theme, or mood from that one.

I agree. It was a beautiful triple axel and as much as I am not a fan of the vocals in this music, it is less similar to his long program than the original short. He skated it beautifully and I was drawn in. As they like to say on American Idol, Jason can be skating to the phone book and he would be amazing. Looking forward to an equally beautiful long.

So, this program, it just occurred to me is, at the oldest, 2 months old (if they started perhaps right before Glacier Falls, for example), but could only be only a few weeks old. All that considered, it looks pretty polished considered the newness.

The timeline does seem odd. Even more so when you remember that his SP had a new costume at TCC and it was updated/changed for GF. I don't think they would have updated the costume if the plan was to move on from the SP.

I think you may be right that he felt he had maxed out his other SP. There was a judge there that give him a perfect score... both in GOE and PCS... you can't get much better than that and it might have felt odd to keep it at that point. And at the same time, if he is getting it perfect from even one judge that early in the season... is it challenging enough for him? Is it pushing him to grow as a skater? Maybe not after nailing it so well.

I also think it could be a factor of him wanting to stay in practice with learning new programs in the fall. Next season is the Olympics, he will have I would think at lest on new program... so wanting to stay in that rhythm might be a good idea. Next season might go a little smoother this way.

I think landing the great 3A after the fall is a really good sign over all. It shows the 3A is more solid than it has been in the past, and that he is less rattled by the quad than in the past. I honestly think he walked off the ice today thinking "I can do this" and that means he will.

As for your prediction... well if he lands his first 4T at SA in the SP... i expect you to start a change of "One Hundred" over and over :agree:


Overall I agree that it is better than Apposionata, and think that this first/works with his free much better. The last SP was too similar and never really grabbed me... it felt like what it was... something simple (for Jason) and accessible that they could pull off in a short time frame. I still would have picked canned heat, but ohh well.

I think the reason for the change might be more simple than we are making it... now that i have thought about it, i suspect what happened was that the Sam Smith exhibition was a hit at "The Ice" and enough so that the decision was made to turn it into a SP.

I also suspect it could be a sign Jason is taking more control of his skating. He has alluded to liking pop music before, and he seemed like he felt very comfortable with this program... it was actually very him. Overall his demeanor at this comp was very calm for him. He seemed very comfortable with everything.

The program is gorgeous. He's costumed well for it. He moves wonderfully and that triple Axel was divine.

But....I can't honestly say I like it. It's just...I don't know. Maybe I need more time to get used to it. I can understand the concept that "Apassionata" was too similar to "The Piano", but there is a whole world of genres between "Apassionata" and "whiny white guy" that could be covered.

I'm no expert, but it looks like a variation on a sit spin to me, except he's not all the way down in the sit, torso and head are crossed to left, and arms are also crossed - right at waist crossing left and left overhead crossing right. Not sure if it has a name - perhaps Karne knows? I agree it's very cool looking.

Note that my husband to my recollection has not seen Jason skate since last year's GP outing, so that is what he would be comparing with. I thought it was especially interesting because of that, that my husband was really surprised in a "Wow, he's so much faster!" way, and what strides Jason might have made in that area in a year's time, if my husband's impression is correct.

I have to say I am really surprised at the criticism this program is getting in some corners. Off the top of my head, aside from the many people who apparently hate Sam Smith so much they can't bear the program, there have been such comments as the program is generic, it's a Josh program not a Jason program, the lyrics are distracting, the music is overwhelming, and my personal favorite, the lyrics are too ominous for a figure skating program. One FSU poster whose opinion I normally respect thinks that Vincent Zhou performs more expressively to this music than Jason does (I totally disagree, but will just leave it at that). And then there's my favorite backhanded compliment that, "Anything that is not slow and pretty pretty is an improvement from Jason."

This all comes on top of past criticism ad nauseum that he looks immature or that his programs are too "cutesy" or "theatrical" and that he's just a shallow, showbizzy, performer. It seems that most people have only ever approved of Prince (I admit it's still my favorite): even River Dance has come in for its share of criticism - like the anti-Jason poster on FSU who insisted that there was nothing special about it and that any senior-level skater could perform that dazzling footwork.

Then there's the matter of his costume: after he was criticized repeatedly for too much glitz and costumes that didn't flatter, distracted from his line, and looked they belonged in a high school theater production, some people now think his black and white costume is too plain and boring; my favorite nonsensical comment comes from the FSU poster who doesn't like the white shirt because she thinks the pocket is distracting. Honestly, along with Gracie and Max, it's hard to think of another skater who's been so criticized for pretty much every move he makes.

At least some of his critics acknowledge his 3A has improved.

It doesn't really have a name. It's classified as an intermediate position, so it doesn't count as a basic position for a combination spin but does class as a feature for the level call, particularly as this one is fairly difficult. It's also really pretty, like all of his spin positions. I could watch Jason spin all day long.

Quick reply... Positive FWIW: loved this skate!! Jason is looking SO good!! Program is less theatrical, more introspective and the change suits him. He has changed as another poster put it can't put my finger on what is different. More solid? More at ease, sure of himself, I think? Certainly more mature.. now a young man. The quad attempt now also looks more like other attempts that happen to all skaters in competition, it has become something he's now taking in stride. You can be sure he will work HARD on it in the months ahead. Something his brother said about him eons ago to the effect that Jason doesn't give up: will continue to work at a thing til he's mastered it. As many have said here in this thread, Jason has mastered the quad in practice... Goal now is to land it in program in competition. Fingers-crossed. Good luck & Go Jason!

I wonder if that spin is a "Jason invention".. I vaguely remember something being said that Jason worked diligently on his spins, trying new positions etc, a while back when he was struggling to master the triple axel; if true, that would "SO Jason" to apply himself to perfecting elements he was already comfortable with while working hard on an element he had yet to master... Ya gotta love this guy!

My husband spent the majority of Jason's skate station how much he dislikes Sam Smith and how this was a terrible Bond song and shouldn't have won the Oscar...

And then said he like Jason's skate and said he looked to be in good form.

Jason does invite comparisons because it is a whiny guys singing program that has been done relatively recently -- Jeremy Abbott did it two seasons ago with another Sam Smith song and as noted Josh's "Show Me Love." So some fans are going to make comparisons.

Jason has the opportunity to make it his own so people don't make those comparisons. But it's there for now.

What struck me was how "grown up" Jason seemed yesterday. He is a young adult now and has he grown taller? Granted he was in skates but walking to the K&C Kori had to look up at him.

I am not familar with Sam Smith (I am a classic rock fan and only listen to contemporary music when skaters force me to) so to me this was a new song. I thought it fit Jason's skating perfectly. And is a nice contrast to the free.

Jason's back! I think I'm liking the short the more I watch it. The music isn't something I would choose to listen to on replay but I think it works for this program. When I hear it, I just think of Bond, and that happened to be my favorite Bond movie in recent years. I do like the outfit, but at times his upper body seemed to get lost against the white background, and i don't like missing any of his beautiful lines. I enjoyed the choreo and the way it matched the music, and Jason hit those emphatic parts. What can I say, I just love watching Jason skate. I don't enjoy jumps as much as the stuff in between the jumps, and he does that so well. Plus, he seemed pretty upbeat after the skate. Not bad at all for a newish program.

Excited about tomorrow!
