Jason Brown

I am sure they are, but they all seem to respond very well to food as well. Gracie's excitement over the Reece's Pieces is a great example.

Jason refused to even pick a single favorite food with his interview with Grant... he mentioned Banana Bread...not sure the type of food Fazer has, but maybe that is a place to start. He also I think liked pizza... but not sure how practical that is.

In Jason's interview he called them "cheat foods", and I think I remember hearing other skaters talk about "cheat" foods. Poor dears.

Actually, to go totally OT, one of my favorite Adam Rippon quotes was regarding his hometown of Scranton, PA, not too far from me. He couldn't think of anything he missed from Scranton, and he finally said "Pizza. Actually, I just miss pizza period."

No pizza???? Ay yay yay.....

So I'm curious. Why would Jason say Uno-kun instead of Shoma-kun? I'm not super familiar with Japanese honorifics, but is there a formality in using the last name instead of the first?

In Japanese you're expected to use surnames when speaking with/about someone unless you're super familiar with that person (like childhood/very close friends, family members, etc.). It's common for even classmates, coworker, and new friends to call someone by their surnames. Kun, on the other hand, is used when speaking to a male younger than you or a male with whom you have an informal relationship, even though not an extremely close one. Kudos to Jason for not only learning the language but also the convention of the Japanese culture .:)

Adam needs to go watch Stanley Cup finals with Max then, he makes his own pizza for it.

I remember the story of Jason making a beeline for the McDonalds in the Olympic Village when the individual event was over - because he wanted a McFlurry

So since I'm totally procrastinating instead of doing what I'm supposed to, I thought I'd repost this clip of Jason's Prince SP from his first GP ever, Skate America 2013. Mrs P originally posted this 2+ years ago - it's from Japanese television, better quality than other clips I've seen of this skate, and miraculously, the sound hasn't been muted (although I realize that for some of you that may not be a benefit)! Anyway, curious to know what you think about his skating here versus at Lombardia - and would love it if one of our Japanese-speaking members could give us an idea what the commentary says!

Jason's taking over the U.S. Figure Skating snapchat during US Classic.

He has a snap of the men's draw, so we should see the start order soon!

Man, I cannot get the hang of Snapchat, but I downloaded it again. For Jason, I will try:biggrin:

The photo of the American men is cute, with Elladj Balde photobombing them. Who is the woman photobombing with him?

Pretty sure she is Paige Lawrence, who after retiring from competition has served as Skate Canada team leader at some comps. Looks like her. Plus see her comment on the Instagram that Adam "stole" ;) from Sean:

So I read Damien Dodge's blog on ice-dance.com and I howled at this mention of Jason:
http://www.ice-dance.com/site/2016-lombardia-trophy-blog-3/

I got to sleep in, aside from being woken up by Jason straightening his hair. He had an early practice and I woke up thinking there was a fire because of the smell, and sound, of his hair burning.
....

BTW, Damian is no stranger to the ordeal of hair prep. He routinely helps Julia with her hair, per his blogging from last season. I was impressed:
... I then went up to Julia's room to "sew" her hair. Due to the deductions taken for items falling on the ice, Julia always sews in all of her hair pieces so that there's no chance of getting a deduction. I feel like, if I didn't have skating, maybe I could have a career in sewing things into hair. I'm not sure how far that would get me, but I'm definitely getting pretty good at it. ....

:hijacked: Speaking of which, I'm so excited that Tarah is coming to Finlandia Trophy! As I'm such a huge fan of her makeup tutorial videos, I'm thinking about giving her some Finnish makeup as a present. ...

I don't know about you but I find the story of this particular makeup brand's international marketing history fascinating. The brand wanted to break into the UK market in the late 90s/early 2000s (when I lived in the UK), but even though it's a quality brand and they used fancy ingredients and the prices were very reasonable, people just wouldn't buy it. They looked into the matter and it turned out that the prices were too low - nobody wanted mid-price cosmetics at Harrods or Selfridges. They bumped up the price by something like 70% and the brand became quite successful (I don't know if it still is).

Great idea to give Tarah make-up from Finland. And great bkgd story about the brand. Just curious: what is the name of the brand?

BTW, on the subject of skaters enjoying sweet rewards:

- The post-FS video of Tarah and Danny from SLC last year was super-cute. She says that per their plan before the FS, they now are going to eat cookies. Danny adds, "... dessert: ice cream and cookies," and she happily repeats, "Cookies."

- Looks as if Mirai returned from Lombardia with chocolates:

Adam needs to go watch Stanley Cup finals with Max then, he makes his own pizza for it.

I remember the story of Jason making a beeline for the McDonalds in the Olympic Village when the individual event was over - because he wanted a McFlurry

And IIRC, I believe Jason added that he then permitted himself to make a daily visit to McD's for ice cream for the remainder of his time in Sochi :).

Photo of the Stanley Cup pizza-makers chez Aaron (for anyone who does not recognize karne's reference):
BTW, the skater in the green shirt is Max's friend Matteo Rizzo of Italy, who makes visits to Colorado for summer training and who originally was on this year's Lombardia entry list. I hope maybe they got to see each other anyway.
Must say it makes me kinda sad that Max has lost both Liam and Maddie as rink-mates :ghug:.

Max hosting another pizza night:

Wow. That must've been some high-temp styling, not surprising given his curly hair.

Forgot to reply to this, but it actually probably wasn't the sound/smell of Jason's hair burning, but likely the heat protector spray on his hair.

Really wish the start orders were up! I only get an hour for lunch and I don't want to end up missing Jason!

Along the lines of US Men are not going to GP events because they're too busy trying to go viral...after Jason had to pull out of NHK

Oh right, how could I forget!

So Ross, Jason, and Adam skate back to back in the middle of the start order - wouldn't it b something if we see successful quad attempts from all 3 of them?

That does dust off some cobwebs... i remember the trying to go viral comment but not the context.

Johnny is just so bloody weird when it comes to Jason. I encourage everyone to watched this clip of him doing commentary for Jason from 2012 nationals.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=t2H-dV6aww4

He is so complimentary to Jason... what happened?

I kinda wonder if part of it is that he (Johnny) is bitter about not trying to make it to the Olympics without a quad like Jason did. There was a lot of gossip that USFSA was really pushing for quads for the Olympics. Johnny tried some quads early and quickly retired as he just was not having luck. Then Jason comes along and makes it to the Olympics sans quad. I wonder if Johnny bought the USFSA's line that they were not going to send sans quad men to the Olympics, and thus stopped trying on that reason. To then see someone make it without a quad... could lead to Johnny kicking himself about listening to USFSA.

And he does give credit where credit is due often. He was very respectful about Jason trying the quad at 4CC, and spoke very highly of Jason's movements at Skate America last year. So he does see the positives... it just seems that he has some of his own ember issues burning that Jason seems to stoke the fires of.

I think they are in different groups.

The stupidity of that comment just baffles me.

Agreed. Was that the same article where he said basically even if you're injured you should compete at Nats if you want to go to worlds?!

In any case, as Stitch pointed out, he - like PH - does still give Jason credit from time to time, so perhaps now he knows the extent of the injury he'll be more even handed in his commentary going forward. I hope so, any way, because he is capable of being insightful.

I didn't realize that Ross, Jason and Adam would be in separate warm up groups. But still, even with people dropping out it sounds like Mura will challenge for a medal. Elladj and Nam are both capable of skating well too, and I really like Brendan Kerry's skating. So it should be interesting tonight!

It's like...first of all, nobody (almost at least) goes viral for trying. And how are these skaters supposed to go viral by not competing? By posting cooking videos? Doesn't make any sense.

http://olympics.nbcsports.com/2016/09/15/jason-brown-figure-skating-us-international-classic/

Article on Jason from NBC. It makes me happy seeing them cover figure skating outside the Olympics and sometimes world championships.

Thx, Stitch :).
Agree that it's great that NBC had some original reporting on figure skating even "just" for the US Classic. And great that Zaccardi wanted to shed new light on Jason's injury and comeback.

(My one quibble is that the headline -- not necessarily written by Zaccardi -- is underwhelming to me. I'm no expert on SEO, but even from that point of view, the headline does not do justice to the article.
ETA: In case it later gets changed, the original/current headline is, "Jason Brown skates from pain to coffee-shop relief, back on the ice".)

Anyway, good luck tonight to Jason, Sean, Ross, and Adam. :yay:

I did not like the viral comment from Johnny.

But didn't Johnny retire b/c of struggles with injuries? Was not an issue of quad or no quad, IMO/IIRC.

I do agree that Johnny does see positives.

Your paraphrasing is unfair to Johnny, IMO.
I don't have an accurate quote at my fingertips either, but at the time, Johnny's words came across to me quite differently.
To me, his criticism was against USFS and its policy of allowing petitioning.
To me, Johnny was not criticizing skaters who choose to submit a petition -- as USFS allows. His tone was not at all along the lines of, "Anyone who is injured should just suck it up and compete at Nats."

ETA:
Lest anyone wonder, my feelings overall about Johnny's commentary are mixed. In the past, I have been accused (unfairly) at least once elsewhere on GS of being a Johnny-hater -- b/c of my negative reaction to some other particular thing that he said or did not say or that he did or did not do.
In the case of Johnny's comment about petitioning, I think he has gotten a bad rap.
