State of U.S. Ladies' skating 2016-17

Ashley is not short for a skater but she's petite in terms of people. I've seen her live and I thought she was quite small, she just zooms across the ice! She does move very big and makes a lot of eye contact, she's fun and a great show skater.

I didn't think Wagner was unusually small when I've seen her, at least by skater standards...

Sasha Cohen, on the other hand...

Senior. And Rafael is reworking her jumps... Sigh.

Speaking of Vivian, what's going on with Emily Chan? How is she looking this season? Did she get her Lutz? Her rivalry with Vivian reminds me of Joshua and Jason's old rivalry.

Emily has competed several times and sort of bombed all of them :slink:. She's trying lutz, although she's never landed it. She is also attempting 3F-3T (which I don't think she's ever landed) and 2A-3T-2T (which she has landed) in the feee skate.

Yes they are! I miss her jumps so much!
I think the poster meant quadricep muscles, not quadruple jumps. ;)

I think Ashley is shorter than 5'3, because I'm 5'4 and I have a picture with her where she was wearing quite high heels and we are exactly the same height in the picture. I was wearing nikes.

But yes, her build is incredibly petite. I think for me the bigger shock was how tiny Adam Rippon and Grant Hochstein are.

I know, lol. With the height she had quads were a definite possibility. What I'm talking about is her jumps being so much smaller now. Check out her Golden West Short program. Sigh...

Yes indeed, I was referencing her quadricep muscles, so disproportionate to her tiny frame which makes it that much more noticeable. Unfortunately, Vivian needs height on her jumps as she does not have that snap and her rotation is slow though she does have the pop in her knees. With that said, her height is what led to her inconsistency so she is now one of the skaters who is trying to reinvent her jumps. I therefore don't like her short-term chances at the podium, but long-term she should be a true contender, compliments of Raf.

I wonder if this is one of the problems in US figure skating today - too many people look at short-term success rather than looking at the bigger picture, having the proper technique and fundamentals that will lead to long-term success. Focus seems to be put on the right here, right now, getting the higher level jumps without paying attention to technique and SSs. Just a couple of years ago the USFS create their "bonus points" to reward lower level skaters to take the bigger jumps in an effort to compete at a higher level in years to come. I'm afraid this will have younger skaters focusing more on jumps but losing GOE while also leaving points for spins, etc. on the table.

Since talking about the need for beautiful skating, Emily is the poster child for getting as many points as possible thru her mature and graceful SSs. Unfortunately, she has never been a jumper yet she has been able to put together back-to-back Novice and Junior Championships. She needs those jumps, though, at the senior level, I just hope old man time doesn't come knocking first.

I kind of agree, though I'm not going to blame weaknesses in spins or SS for the problems facing the US ladies. Looking at scoresheets for many second-tier US ladies, most of the issues seem to stem from URs. Are US judges at lower levels giving those jumps full credit? I'm not sure. IMO, a lot of mid-tier and/or junior US ladies have very nice basics and decent spins. But they can't rotate their jumps. The jump technique they're learning is bad because they aren't changing to elite coaches early enough in their careers. Hopefully Vivian's switch to Raf this young well do wonders for her, long term.

The odd thing is, Vivian Le seemed to be maturing very nicely early this year. She looked beautiful in her Genie in a Bottle exhibition at Christmas and at the Dallas comp in April. Then I hear she has switched to Raf and she shows up at a summer comp with tiny jumps. She had a very rough time at a recent senior US regional comp and, I think, barely advanced to sectionals.

I have to wonder what happened. An injury? Or is Raf rebuilding her jumps? Vivian did struggle with the edge jumps. Sometimes you have to take something apart before you can build it back stronger and better.

Whatever it is, I wish Vivian the best. She's one of my favorite young skaters.

I do believe she was out with an injury for some time, and moved to Raf while she was injured. It's why she withdrew from Glacier Falls and the FS at Golden West. I was at Regionals when she competed, and I would say her mistakes were because she hadn't been jumping for a while. That's what it looked like to me.

Maybe Emily could try ice dance? With her spotty jumps but great SS's maybe she would do well there. I realize US Ice Dance is pretty competitive and she'd have to find the right partner, but just a thought.

Well she has skated as a pair before, that could be a possibility.

She'd be better off skating in pairs than in dance. US pairs pretty frequently get critiqued for their lack of polish and skating skills, and Emily has those in spades. Plus, pairs is way less competitive in the US. Her jumps aren't singles strong, but they are good enough for pairs.

Why did she stop doing pairs to pursue singles? Is she too tall? (I don't know much about Emily Chan beyond her exquisite skating.)

Seriously though, I feel like it's a huge shame that her international career may be unfortunately limited because of her weaknesses in jumps. She has an it factor, musicality, and skating skills that deserve to earn recognition. Pairs could be the right venue for her talent.

Any US singles men who would be better in pairs? Let's see some SBS 3T-3Ts and 3Fs.

He might not be (okay, probably isn't) tall enough, but I feel like Emily and Andrew Torgashev as a pair would be ! They both have the artistry and the SS and the spins...might not be enough height gap, though.
