He was just using the rink for practice.

Skate America is in the next town over from me and is probably about a 20 minute drive from my house. Thursday is a full day of practices, and the competition starts Friday. Ladies Friday and Sat., men Sat. and Sunday.I am REALLY looking forward to it. I'm thinking Jason, Boyang, and Shoma will be in the top 3, but it's hard to predict what order. We'll see - anything can happen. :agree:

Mrs. Bambi! so nice. i imagined she is pretty. Further, you are so considerate and reserved. the photo with Shoma will be your treasure!
personally, ive come to Czech this monday, and get settled at my house. Of course, it may need some time for me to get used to
here, but anyway, i could have done all the things for the past few months, expecially for the one month for moving and am so relieved. Now im ready for skating season! i just wish my favorites, and all the skaters stwill ay healthy.

Are you going to practice? i wanna read your report if you write anywhere through competition! skate america's skaters are so gorgeous. im sure you will see something wonderful there!:agree:

I have been to 5 big competitions but have never been to any of the official practices. I am REALLY excited about finally going to a practice! This Thursday, all 4 disciplines have their first practices - starting with the men at 10 am and finishing at around 4 pm. I think it will be a long but exciting day. I will be posting information every day. Shoma is #1 for me, but I have so many other favorites too. I care about who the winners are, but my main wish is that no one gets injured. We already have far too many injuries! :sad4:

You are really lucky because in some rinks they might have discouraged you from going in - Karne said that when she was at World Arena she didn't feel comfortable watching Max or Josh.

Did he speak and understand English?

Funny about the Portillo's! It's such a not -Japanese thing!

I'm assuming you meant Chris Howarth (Brit)? You know he does some of the BBC broadcasts, right?

If you are there Thursday maybe I'll see you!

I have traveled to countries where you never, ever take a picture without asking someone, so now it has become a habit with me to ask. Of course sometimes I ask, and people say "Please, no!" But Shoma was so nice about it. I am REALLY looking forward to the practices. It was so fun to watch Shoma today. He looked very relaxed but also very intense. It was so cool when he was doing his spins just a few feet away from me. Wow! And he seems to pick up speed so quickly when he skates.

Congratulations on finally arriving to your new house! You will have so many new adventures - I'm so jealous! SO much work you had to do. You win a prize for patience and perseverance. :bmrk: But now you can relax and watch skating. I also think you will go to competitions in the future and have so much fun!!!:rock:

Several people have had to drop out of Skate America due to injuries. I am so disappointed to not see Yulia Lipnitskaya! So many great skaters will be there though, including Mao and Mai Mihara. As always, I hope for a competition where no one gets hurt!

--They couldn't have been nicer about me coming in. Part of it may have been that there were only a few people. The lady at the front desk was super nice though and I actually spent quite awhile talking with her about skating and Shoma.
--I think Shoma probably speaks less English than I speak Japanese, which isn't saying much. I think I got so excited I was having a hard time even speaking English! :laugh2: I pointed to my camera and asked if I could take a picture and he posed right away. When I told him Good Luck he said Thank You. I tried to tell him that I love his programs, but I could immediately see that "huh?" look in his eyes, so I just thanked him again and left.
--Hopefully the Portillo's stuff was for his brother, cos I think he needs to watch his figure! :scard7: Those killer shakes and hamburgers and chocolate éclair cake might not be so good for his tiny frame.
--Yes, actually I was hoping to talk to Chris about the BBC broadcasts, because I promised some GS'ers that the next time I was there I would pass on their good wishes to him and let him know how well-liked they (he, Nicky, and Simon) are. Chris was giving a private lesson though at the time.
I will be there Thursday! I will probably have on my Matsumoto Hawaii grey sweatshirt, so I'll be easy to spot! Enjoy!

I wanna see official practice. There must be some of findings there. In Japan there seems to be news that skaters were leaving for skate America. I hope none of skaters will get any injury. This is pre Olympics season. Time is fast!
 
Arriba that's so cool about Shoma! And congrats on the new home hamaguri!

You're making me jealous now that I'm missing all of the fun. And then one of my friends who is a VERY casual fan just so happens to be in Chicago that weekend and she plans to attend the Men's free. I was talking Shoma up a lot because I know she'll love him. Like me, she's a bit of a Japanophile (in college we met in Japanese class and were anime fans, etc, lol), so I think she'll latch onto Shoma pretty easily. She enjoys Daisuke and Yuzu too so it feels like a no brainer lol. I'm sure you guys are in for a good time. Even with his mistakes I really thought he was great to watch at worlds. The next two weeks I'm just going to be jealous. I have friends attending Skate America AND Skate Canada. I want to be at both but alas grad school is my life right now. ::gaah:

One of the excitement to see figure skating live is you can feel the speeds and the sound of landing. On screen, we cant see speed well, but when you see on live, you can tell how it differs among skaters. Shoma is on, he’s like a cannon ball when you once described!

Yes, at my town, i hardly see Asian and i seem to stand out(lol). I read your post about communication with Shoma in English interestingly. Im going to school for study Czech here, but as you say, it’s very humbling experience! I’m going to enjoy all the experience that will come here!

Yes. It’s very sad to see any skater must skip a competition. They make an effort for competitions. :sad21:

Portillo has a lot of cal? I feel sorry for shoma. He must keep on a diet although he’s young. When i was in his age, i was always hungry and got a lot of sweets... :laugh:

I think my photos came out a little dark at today's practice. Plus I took a video that I tried to post and because Jason's music is in the background, it showed a copyright infringement! :curse: Bah humbug! Maybe tomorrow will be better!

This is SO true about the speed and the sound. Many times I am sitting in the "oxygen mask level" seats (WAY, WAY up!). But today we were in the 5th row, and the speed was so exciting. You are right that you really don't see it on TV or on You Tube, etc. I wish I could afford to sit that close all the time. It is really a treat!

"Huh" is kind of like saying "What?" or "Excuse me?" and in this case also "What are you saying?!" But I didn't care that Shoma didn't understand me. After all, he's supposed to be a skater, not a linguist! :laugh:

Portillo's is a very popular fast food place in the Chicago area. We probably have about 10 of them. They have healthy foods, but most people prefer their unhealthy stuff, I think! :popcorn: There is one near my house, and every day at noon time, our town police have to direct traffic in and out of this place because there are so many cars! Kind of hard to believe, but true!

I think you will do fine in your temporarily adopted country and will have fun being unique!:rock: ...Practices are from 11:00 am to 4:00 pm tomorrow. Then Ladies and Pairs short program tomorrow night. Should be exciting!

thanks arriba! Seeing expressions of skaters close to them must have been so exciting. In practices, they seem to show their characters, habits, etc. Soon the competition starts! Have a wonderful time!

A few clean 4T today from Shoma but no clean 4F. He was getting dizzy from all of his spins I think towards the end of practice!:palmf: He had better energy today, as did the other competitors. Seemed like they were all testing the ice out yesterday. Men's practice is at 7 am tomorrow. Oh dear! :drama: He ran through his FS today, skipping parts of it here and there. Got a nice applause when he finished...Sorry can't write more. Heading back to rink for Ladies and Pairs SP in a bit.
