2016-2017 State of Canadian Figure Skating

i still want her to do the 3t-3t in the short.... her lutz is indeed gigantic... so it's a bit too risky in my opinion as the triple triple combo... btw her flip was huge too... i was relieved she managed to control that one... maybe she should just go for quads LOL
Gabby just skated a strong SP (protocols). Her 3Lz was a bit too powerful, leading to a downgraded 3T being tacked on. Second highest BV of the night, third highest TES, fourth highest PCS, fourth in the SP. Not a terrible start.

Now we wait for Julianne and Charlie.

4everchan Gabby's flip was honestly scary too. I thought she may not be able to land it. Perhaps she is practising quads on the side, like Elizabet Tursynbaeva. There is problem in her getting height on jumps, so maybe she should consider it. Is she keeping the 3Lz-3T in the SP to practice for the FS? I can't recall if we discussed this.

So Julianne and Charlie were quite good except for Charlie's 3Lo which became a double and was pretty ugly. They would be clear in second if that hadn't happened. Got all level fours, which is encouraging (protocols). The Australian and American judges gave the harshest PCS. :)

CBC has Gabby's video replay up....http://www.cbc.ca/sports/videos#id=791136323701

Edited to add....while heading towards an over-rotation, the flip doesn't look so risky to me on replay. But agree that the adrenaline was in overdrive.

But it is certainly not the low tight, and often fairly tilted flips we see from so many. Her flip is really a flip, and the lutz a lutz. Love that.

in the free she does 3T-3T if I recall... but she may have changed her layout from last competition...

I just adore her 3T-3T and honestly, she would lose only 1 point in BV in the short but it cost her 5 points today to downgrade and get negative goe on that combo... she would be very close to first if she listened to me LOL (JK)

regarding Seguin and Bilodeau, they were underscored in PCS. That's all. On the GP circuit, they are seen as Canadian 3rd pair since D/R and I/M are both seeded pairs. However, aside from the loop, they skated very well technically and I think they will rise to second... they have to. :)

definitely... BIG jumps... so exciting.. .reminds me of chouinard....though if Josée also had that huge lutz, I think gabby's flip is much bigger

Maybe Gabby will go back and do as you say for TDF. :) She's tried the 3Lz-3T for a bit now and has seen how it's gone.

I get the seeding thing about Séguin/Bilodeau but anyone who followed the Grand Prix series last season and watched GPF must know they are Canadian number 2. But you are right, their PCS were not good. Even below James/Cipres who didn't have a terrible night themselves. I guess it's like we saw with Wagner and Gold - the Americans have to do well at Skate America. Skate Canada has understood this and sent no top man and no ice dance teams to this event.

indeed... no point sending canadians to SA... i mean ... as you said, the french and canadian teams were underscored :) and who does that favour??? hehe

mind you, they also had the last two scoring teams but both of them struggled hard today

Pairs:

S/B would've scored 72+ with Charlie's jump. I think their score (and lowballed PCS) made sense. It really was a hideous looking jump.

On the plus side, Charlie has the best expression of any male pairs skater competing now by far. He could almost give the likes of Guillaume Cizeron and Scott Moir a run for their money, performance-wise. The program is going to be a winner when they skate it clean.

Ladies

Gabby's jumps are so impressive looking, but coupled with adrenaline, she clearly finds it really hard to control them. Some of those landings were :drama:. I liked the program all in all though. Her 2A barely had any prep time whatsoever and was enormous.

i don't think a pop ugly double should affect PCS score...

Eh, the whole program was pretty sloppy and didn't look as sharp as they've been in the past. I understood the PCS. Third with basically no jump makes sense. (The overscoring of the Americans is another issue entirely)

How nice it would be if Gabby and Satoko could share jump power. Gabby would get some consistency and control, while Satoko would get some jump height.

I'm not as convinced as you olayolay that the one jump should cost S/B such a huge chunk of PCS. Well, it's fine. There's still the FS. And if they need to have some bad marks to work on concerning areas then so be it. You learn more from adversity than you do from prosperity, right?

Megan Yim was back on the ice and skating with beautiful lines. She fell on two of her jumps but still leads the senior ladies with a score around ~48 at Autumn Leaves. I'll dig around for an SP and post here.

i guess i didn't find them sloppy other than the jump. YMMV

Here's Megan's SP: https://youtu.be/SHfS-oh2svo

If she gets her technical elements sorted out she could be the top Canadian lady after Kaetlyn, Gabby, and Alaine retire.

well... why wait for others to retire? Plus... i have the feeling that Alaine and Gabby are sticking until 2022 ;)

I liked Megan a lot. She reminded me of Midori's style of skating (not necessarily the jumping but the rest).. Am I drunk? hehe

If we could only combine Megan's SS with Sarah Tamura's TES...! Lol I am becoming a bit like Victor Frankenstein. Halloween is around the corner...

But the amount of technical sorting out that Canadian ladies not ranked top 3 have to do is ridiculous. Larkyn Austman, Michelle Long, Veronik Mallet, Sarah Tamura, Megan Yim, Emily Bausback, the Decelles twins...this list is pretty long. What is it about the Canadian ladies that makes them so poor technically?

Go to bed 4everchan. Skate America picks up again at 2 PM Eastern.

i am cleaning the house... some people coming over tomorrow morning... SIGH

Not sure "sloppy" is the word. But I get the feeling....

Even though the elements were level 4s, in between there was something less confident, that was selling the program less. At this point, their "Consisent Canadians" moniker might be a disadvantage.

I saw their LP at ACI. I have to say that perhaps, they were a bit too clean and conservative in their interpretation... However, it's not like the skating itself is worth way less than the other teams that were competing here... I am very impressed with Julianne. She always manages to nail everything. At ACI she kept falling in the warmup. I don't get that confidence and a sparkle from Charlie. He's so nice and sweet but maybe he needs more grip? Not sure????

Is anyone else having a big question mark about Nam's PCS for the SP?

He definitely was slow, and Kurt Browning has backhandedly said that he'd like to see him "back up to senior men speed", but with a clean program the disparity with the 6 point disparity with the top 3 seems excessive. And I note that he was marked down across the board...were the transitions and choreography so relatively deficient?

Any thoughts?
