2016-2017 State of Canadian Figure Skating

Sorry somehow I deleted my post i was trying to edit. Oops. Here goes again

Ok.. so 3 other skaters of which at least 2 (Erik, Netherlands; Sonia , Spain) are Cricket Club skaters. Michaela Du Toit may or not be at Cricket. I know she was in the past but I thought she had switched last season and the JGP Brian was with her.
So somehow Zach got tacked to it.

I know the scores as I'm aware of is 155 or higher for Junior for assignment and this was as of this past spring. The only thing I can think of is the perhaps its Skate Ontario and not Skate Canada who are sending these skaters. No visible differentiator but keep an eye out and see if they got the Canada jacket. If they did, that means it was from Skate Canada then.

To add on to what CdnSk8Fan has said I think the assignment for Eri came as a result of an assignment she had last season, to the Gardena Spring Trophy, which she was unable to attend due to injury. I know her marks were low, but she was in the top 10 at Nationals so it's likely Skate Canada wanted to ensure she has her senior minimum scores. Despite careful planning with their junior skaters they ran into that issue with Kevin Reynolds coming off of injury and being unable to get both the minimums in time for Worlds.

By the way if anyone was curious about it Central Ontario put up a table of the 2015-2016 Skaters' Trust Fund disbursement in the program book for sectionals. Their biggest expenditure was international assignments, which was about $23k. The trust fund financially helped support 72 athletes and 14 synchro teams. COS is doing good. :agree:

Cricket club is a millionaire club - they probably can support and promote their skaters. Connections with skate canada helps too

Just read on Facebook that Kirsten and Mike had to pull out of NHK, but they will be competing at Skate Canada challenge.

For sure. :( I can't find any info on KMT's injury other than her saying it's concussion related. Was this why they pulled out of their first GP?

KMT tweeted earlier today that there was too much to say to put in a tweet, and provided a link to a post on her Facebook page...but that is now offline...:scratch2:

Did anyone catch it while it was up?

"Though there have been many frustrating aspects to this injury, pulling out of NHK Trophy is certainly the most difficult one. Japan is among my very favourite places to compete and also travel to in general. I really hope to be able to go back soon!!
I am progressing extremely well and though we are back training part time, my brain is not ready for a long travel across the world. We are, however, super excited to compete at Skate Canada Challenge in a couple weeks!! It's been a long time coming! Thanks for the love!"

Happy tears for Kaetlyn, for her Silver and her 1st Grand Prix final. This season has been about giving the Canadian women the RESPECT they deserve! Never again should they be taken for granted.

4everchan, I know you're sleeping right now...hopefully, but I don't know who I am happier for, Patrick or you? The man came through BIG TIME...what a skate! How many cat claws have been dug into you over the years as you defended P. Ciddy. RESPECT to you both!

Looks like Julianne and Charlie are in, as are D&R and V&M, maybe. That said, would this be Canada's largest contingent ever to a GP Final?

Hi Osmond4gold!!! It's been quite the journey indeed.... but I have only joined the forum in March 2015, when Patrick was retired.... that's when I was made fun of for my username... (i guess you could have as well!!!) and discovered the disgrace of some (perhaps way too many) people for Patrick... they still talk about him stealing his medals in 2012-13... I am like.. come on!!! :) I feel happy and sad right now..

1) I was exhausted and couldn't watch ice dance.... I feel sad that ONLY ONE Canadian team will make the GPF.... I am sure by the time worlds come around the corner that the 3 USA teams who qualify will not be ahead of all our Canadian teams... it's bad luck really for Gilles and Poirier who have scored quite high in the beginning of the season but were discarded in their wonderful SD in Paris.... It was also bad luck for Weapo to have to skate against local faves in Russia, unranked team who needed a win to make the GPF... and got it.... especially, since they arrived there and also in CoC with some more finishing work to do... So bad luck, and bad timing for dance team #2-3 .... Nationals will be fierce between our top 3 teams... WOW!!! So... 4everchan at sleep : Weapo lose a rank and don't make it to GPF

2) for some weird reason : I woke up at 330am... I was hungry and had an urge to clean my place so stayed up, ate and watched the ladies ;) I was so excited whem Kaetlyn landed both her big opening combos that I thought OMG, she got this... and then bang and bang... 4 carrots, 2 falls... sigh but what I thought was amazing was her composure... she kept fighting and her general level of skating was strong. I'm so proud of her for winning two silvers on GP this year. With two clean programs, she's a top 5 contender at worlds. 4everchan awake : KO qualifies :)

3) when the ladies finished, the men were just about to start... so i thought i may as well watch ;) I had thought that Patrick would land his 4S here, and then make some mistakes because he would lose a bit of focus.. well that's not what he needed... he needed to be clean everywhere but for the 4S to win... and he did deliver that... I am still asking the skating gods to allow us to have this program in its clean and perfect state at least ONCE this season so I can always go back to it and watch it... like I do with 4CC and TEB 2013.... I have so much love for Patrick and his skating that I had to force myself to go to bed after his victory... I also thought it would be a waste of happiness to keep in the forum as the usual culprits would try to say that Patrick's PCS saved him and yadda yadda... well... Patrick earned 104 points in TES!!!! take that world... and only 93 in PCS which is a few points too low IMHO. 4everchan is up : Patrick wins and qualifies for GPF

4) I thought for a brief second I should stick around and watch the pairs... to give some 4everchan support to lubov and dylan who also needed to qualify and for that, needed to be ranked 2 in here...

Oh well... I just couldn't... I had to sleep... then work a couple hours.... and then I went back to bed... 4pm now... just woke up... and I know they haven't made it... I looked at protocols... oh well... it's not like any team really landed their stuff... it's too bad... but without having looked at the rankings, I wonder if perhaps, if I/M had qualified, it would have excluded S/B... considering that P/J will most likely earn a silver at NHK... and would get 24 as well... anyways... I am okay with them going back home and keeping their progress. They need to be solid at Nationals as I really want them to be at worlds... they did so well there last year. 4everchan sleeping: no GPF...

So in the end, I am thrilled for Patrick, but wished all 4 Canadians contestants to qualify this weekend... we got only half of that... but still 4 medals...

I am disappointed that Paul and Islam didn't get to skate... they have been going down the world rankings of Ice Dance and that was a good opportunity for them to see where they have improved and what they still need to work on this year.

In any case, a crazy weekend for sure!

Next week, I will be a bit less nervous so may sleep better :) and will hope that Alaine screws up the hopes of GPF for some people by taking a medal there ;) not like I am against any of the skaters ;) just because I hope she does well.

Who else watched the events live? any impressions?

I am predicting Osmond4gold at COC... Yes... it's very daring... I don't believe in jinxing... i just feel Kaetlyn is about to burst on the scene with a big warning.

If I am wrong, well... i have been right and wrong before.. :) but watch out for Kaetlyn! She is going for it!

loves quoting meeeeeself lol :) wasn't too far off :) cannot wait to see how Kaetlyn does in GPF

It is great but for Weapo:( I honestly after seeing them skate was hoping for a giant jump for Gilles and Porier - I have been impressed - even moreso than Hubbell and Donahoe who also impressed me a lot this year.

Well that was an interesting weekend of skating for Canada. Medals in all four disciplines. Not bad.

Weaver/Poje - miss a trip to GPF. But get a level 4 step sequence for the Midnight Blues. And a level up on the twizzles in the SD. Funny enough they had the exact same mark in the FD at Rostelecom if you add in the point from the lift deduction. This crazy competitive ice dance season will see some good teams out of the GPF so it's not big deal. Actually, it may be better to take some time for themselves than go to Mareseille and come 4th or 5th. Peaking later is better in this pre-Olympic season. Next competitive appearance will be Nationals, but if you want to see them they'll be at Christmas on Ice in Japan in mid-December. They'll also be at the Bryant Park tree lighting ceremony in NYC December 2.

Kaetlyn Osmond was 🔥 in the SP. Some carrots in the FS. She's got two weeks to work out the kinks. The first Canadian lady since Joannie Rochette to break 200 points is now also the first since Joannie to make it to GPF. She became only the third Canadian woman to earn this spot. I predicted somewhere that being third at Nationals and off the World team would light a fire under her butt and I think she's proven me right. Competing at two domestic summer events, winning Finlandia, delivering in Mississauga and now Beijing. She's on a mission.

Lubov/Dylan got a PB in the SP. A struggle in the FS hurt their chance for a spot in the GPF. But a bronze here for their second GP medal is much improved from last season. Now they'll work to get their consistency up as they did in the lead up to Worlds. I didn't think it, but maybe the battle for #2 on the pairs podium is brewing. We'll have to see what Séguin/Bilodeau decide to do about those SBS 3Lo. Their next appearance is this weekend at EDGE Gala at Sixteen Mile Sports Complex in Oakville. (I'd go but NHK is going to have me like )

Patrick!!!!! Our man's finding his form in the FS. His SP is still not 100%. But it's gonna get there, I believe. He didn't fall on his 3 Axels. And he didn't double that 3F. That's enough for me. Next stop: GPF.

Medals count
12 gold, 10 silvers, 10 bronze = 32 medals in total

In other news: Challenge is fast approaching. Gabby and Kirsten/Michael are attending. We have a thread here. Join us if you like.

A few weeks ago, Kaetlyn mentioned in an interview that finishing 3rd in Halifax was a shock!

I saw the LP's live at nationals and IMO, there is no question regarding the podium finishes. Too cautiously skated and afraid of making errors me thinks. Last season, she needed to get the experiences of competing again, under her belt. Kaetlyn went on to say, she would will never take competitions for granted any more...so in reflection, perhaps it was a good thing.

The results are confirming at the moment that perhaps inspired by the belief that she can do more, ...this girl is on fire!
