I would love to see her skate again. And I don't doubt she must be heartbroken after working on Hillary campaign. And I recall she was quite crushed when her hubby lost his race for a Rhode Island governor. I know she or her family own two rinks in Califormia and I wonder if she is e er seen there?

Will Michelle ever return to skating at any of the fundraising shows? I am disappointed she has not participated in Evening of Champions at Haryard or Scott Hamiltons shows to raise funds for cancer charities. Other than those Yuna shows I don't think she has skated since 2010? In public?

Since she always said she loved everything about skating I find it strange she never does the charity circuit with Brian Boitano or Kristi or Scott. Maybe that will change. I am guessing she is likely very sad like so many people but she is a rich woman and can do whatever pleases her. Not sure how old she is- maybe 35? I do know she loved her sister Karen's kids a lot and wonder if Michelle has ever stated that she wants kids?

Lastly I know she is PC correct and very careful about statements and avoiding controversy but I hope we hear what she really thinks about this election. At one time Michelle had millions of American fans. I hope she uses that celebrity for good. Although I cannot blame her if she feels totally turned off by politics after these losses.

Anyone here have an special knowledge of what our 5 time world champ is up to??? I have watched so many of her programs so many times and while I have a few favorite moments- skating has made us all expect constant movement. Sadly there is no time for these great ladies to show off a spiral like Kwans. I sure do miss the spiral sequences we used to take for granted. Sigh.:

She seems like a perfectionist who might not want to perform in shows if she is unable to reproduce anything close to her competitive form. She had some serious physical ailments at the end of her career that, along with her age, may prevent her from skating as well as she'd like to.

Michelle was recently re-elected for a third term on the board of directors of the Special Olympics. Their big Games is coming up next year in Dubai.

She is co-ordinating the Providence, Rhode Island, Christmas tree lighting festival, but I don't think that she will skate herself. (She did skate briefly last year.) She still skates a little recreationally and occasionally took some of the staff of the Hillary campaign out skating.

She remains active in various AAPI (Asian American and Pacific Islander) economic leadership groups and in organizations that promote health and fitness programs for girls and women.

I imagine that the results of the Presidential election were a blow to her. She maintained an exhausting schedule criss-crossing the country on behalf of the Hillary candidacy. I believe that her husband, Clay Pell (a delegate to the Electoral College for Rhode Island), is already looking ahead to organizational efforts on behalf of local and state Democrats. I don't know whether Michelle has had her fill of politics or if she will take up a new cause or campaign down the road.

Michelle Kwan for President 2028!

Seeing as how y'all have to get Michelle Obama in there in 2020.

(Although the US will probably end up electing Michele Bachmann instead. :slink:)

I don't remember hearing/reading about Michelle wanting children, but I do recall her mentioning about wanting to leave a legacy or something like that for her grandchildren!

Her injuries had taken quite the toll and she doesn't skate much so it might be hard to do shows especially if she wants to jump. She is a legend so nothing will change if she skates or not. I can understand as a perfectionist why she might not want to skate. But her fans still love her.

She posted some footage of her doing an inside edge spread eagle and some one foot turns like a month ago on Instagram and even in that small clip, her edges were to die for. I loved seeing her featured on Ice Network and posing for pictures with current competitors on Instagram at Nationals and Worlds.

I don't think a career as a politician is for her. I follow some popular politicians on social media, Instagram/YouTube/Twitter, and they are really involved with the "common people," as it were. They're taking pictures with normal citizens, selfies, and 80%+ of their instagrams are filled with pictures of their meetings with little guys, like farmers, waitors and waitresses, bookstore employees, etc.

I follow Michelle on Instagram and Twitter, and the content distribution is:
30℅ look at meeeeeee: "look at me doing an exercise pose, look at my new shoes, look at my car, look at my dog, look at me with a celebrity"
30℅ reminiscing about her figure skating days
30% hanging out with other Hillary Clinton employees or high level executives types
10℅ are her actually getting out and meeting people.

Clay Pell aka Mr. Michelle Kwan is even worse about meeting common people. Yes, he shook a lot of hands during his campaign for Rhode Island governor, but that was after he hadn't actually lived in Rhode Island in like, 20 years. The entire state is 1 mile wide, so people notice newcomers .......

I'm glad you're telling us what Michelle is up to, but it should be clear to any normal person what she's up to.
- If she's involved with the Paralympics, why is there literally no mention of the Paralympics anywhere on her Twitter or Instagram? The Paralympics literally just happened a few months ago, I see nothing on her social media about it. I saw two Olympic posts on her social media: one about the able summer athletes in Rio, and one about 1998 Nagano.

Edit: okay, I see that it's actually the Special Olympics. But my point still stands, there's nothing on her social media about that either. Plenty of shots of her in her Lyrica Angelica dress though ...

- Why aren't there any posts about her talking to normal Rhode Island people about this tree festival?
- Why don't I see her tweeting about her support for Asian American and Pacific Islander athletes or whatever?

Maybe she's more suited to be an executive boardwoman or something, but I don't think this political career is going to work out with her current strategy.

She was a surrogate outreach coordinator on the campaign, which meant a lot of tireless office work and not so much field time. So she wasn't running for anything, nor did she have the chance to attend local county fairs. When she went out to field offices to meet with volunteers and energize them, she often posted pictures of them on her IG.

Hmm, I suppose I took those people for Hillary employees.

Nonetheless, I presume that her husband is going to run for governor again (maybe???), so she really should get used to mingling with the common folks.

Also, what of the Special Olympics? *crickets*

What of her Asian American efforts? *crickets*

I mean, who knows, Mathman could just be making up all this, and there's good reason for no photos of the above.

If you really have been paying attention to MK's Instagram, I am surprised that you do not recall:

- That her most recent Instagram promoted the Special Olympics. (And it's a cool photo.)

- That when she attended the Special Olympics World Games in LA in Jul 2015, she posted quite a few photos. Some examples:

FYI for brightphoton:
If you don't want to take MM's word for it, Michelle's re-election to the board is noted in the Special Olympics press release from Nov 15:

Off topic:
Dornbush is skating at this year's tree lighting in Providence. Seems to be the headliner. MK has good taste :).

The first picture is of NBA basketball sensation Yao Ming, so I could classify that under "look at me, pictures of famous people!" Unless you would also classify her pictures of Katy Perry, Demi Lovato, Mariah Carrey, and Lady Gaga under "Hillary campaign."

Edit: add in Bon Jovi, Pharrell, Sarah Jessica Parker, Michael Phelps, Meryl Streep, Chloe Grace Moritz, Magic Johnson. If photos are any indication, it seems like meeting famous people are higher on the priority list than promoting Asian American or Special athletes.

The other 4 pictures are from last year, and one of them is with another famous NBA basketball. One is a blurry picture of the scenery, one is an official ambassador, and one is at a red carpet event (!). Well, the carpet is black, but it's still one of those fancy events. Did she even watch an Special Olympics athletic event? Couldn't find a single athlete at an entire Olympics?

There are 10 times as many pictures of her dog, or her parent's dog, or whoever it belongs to. Heck, there are more pictures of Karen Kwan's athletic daughter doing gymnastics, or Michelle's shoes, or random exercise poses.

I feel that Michelle thinks it is not very important to interact with common people. Which is totally okay! If she wants to be a celebrity surrogate or celebrity promoter of the Olympics.
But it's not a winning strategy for getting votes, for either her or her husband.

Speaking of Clay Pell, he better be meeting and doing something with those common people if he wants to win. Now that's a real cricket profile. Can't rely on Grandpa's last name forever.

She's been a millionaire since teenager days. They are not common anymore. She does love to be photographed looking glam. I'm surprised there are no kids. Maybe now. Richgirlmarries rich guy. Michelle has been in a bubble for20 years. She has money and most likely has no common friends.

(1) You are the one who cited social media as a barometer of Michelle's involvement in the Special Olympics. (And who falsely claimed, "*crickets*".)
And again, you really are not even trying to pay attention.

- Allen Wales IS a Special Olympics athlete, as well as global messenger. (The Special Olympics have lots of global messengers.) He is with Michelle in one of her Instagrams that I linked above.
- Marco Martinez also IS a Special Olympics athlete, as well as global messenger. He is with Michelle in another of her Instagrams that I linked above.

(2) The message attached to MK's Instagram with Yao Ming clearly is promoting the Special Olympics.

Always great working with @specialolympics board member YAO!!!!! Join the Special Olympics family and be a part of the global movement to improve the lives of people with intellectual disabilities.
Yes, people enjoy seeing a cool photo with recognizable icons like them, but the point obviously is to draw positive attention to the Special Olympics.
Michelle is using her name/face recognition to generate interest in the Special Olympics. Good for her .

(3) At the time of the Special Olympics World Games, independent news reports/videos/photos were plentiful showing Michelle's attendance at competitions and her interaction with athletes.
No, I'm not going to waste my time looking up any of the old links for you, b/c you are he**bent on coming up with worthless excuses to be dismissive of anything legitimate.
But an example is that Yuna and Michelle generated some positive publicity for the Special Olympics when each partnered with a Special Olympian and faced off in an exhibition badminton match at the World Games. (Meaning Michelle+partner vs. Yuna+partner.)

Let me give you an anecdote. I met Michelle Kwan at a AAPI event for Hillary a few months ago and interacted with many AAPI professionals and lawyers like myself. She was genuine and spoke at length about AAPI outreach, issues we face, and gave everyone solid one-on-one time. I don't think running for office is for her either, but I had no doubt she really cared about the issues she was discussing as she was very knowledgeable in conversation.

Her role for the Hillary campaign was outreach, but beforehand, I read different articles about her doing work behind the scenes for the orgs she's working for. There is a reason why she was elected for a third term on the board of directors for the Special Olympics and has been involved in the Women's Sports Foundation. Just because she's not chronicling things on social media doesn't mean she's not doing the work. That said, Kwan has often tweeted about the Special Olympics and retweeted many things about AAPI events, or other human rights issues. It may not be as numerous as others who really are more present in social media (posting dozens or more times a day), but I never expected Kwan to be that sort of social media poster as it took her a long time, for a celebrity, to even get on social media. Actually, I'm the same way. I use it to follow people and like Tweets or re-Tweet, but never really post much and I don't really go there that often. It doesn't mean I'm not doing the work for the causes and movements I believe in.

I don't now why you're being relentlessly and irrationally negative about Michelle Kwan (it's beyond this one thread), minimizing her efforts as if you are actually there on the ground seeing her work first-hand, or trying to characterize her and her husband as being people who think are above "common people" (how are you even defining "common people" anyway?), but I find your posts simply ignore a lot of posts that are showing the contrary and are instead working hard to force predetermined conclusions based on flimsy support due to some transparent agenda. Maybe she should do more if she wants to go into politics, but that in itself isn't sufficient to make a determination of what kind of career she's looking into.

It is astonishing to me what people write on the Internet.

Seriously. I mean just a quick glance at her social media shows that she has no common friends? Doesn't interact with common people? Mathman lying about Kwan being appointed for a third term for the Special Olympics? There having to be a reason for a lack of posts for AAPI efforts and the Special Olympics?

Some people are seriously quick to shove their agenda-driven conspiracies as truth based on virtually nothing. Not to first time a poster published a neutral-sounding post as a way to get an opportunity to get a not-so-subtle dig in.

Well I too said she is not common folk anymore. She is an elite skater, a millionaire and works at prestigious posts. I don't think she nor her husband are political material. But I wish she would go back to skating some shows. She said on T V while commentating at 2009 worlds maybe she had all her triples back so how bad was injury????

She knew she could not compete against Mao, Yuna Joannie. But I recall her saying that wearing a gown and talking about Yunas three wow factors. Sasha attempted the comeback. Still Even if she can only do a double axel and a triple loop she likely can do the leaps, the spread eagles spirals and spins. She looks pretty fit.
