So I was watching videos from 2014 Olympics for the first time, since before I only watched Yuzu plus a few others, but wasn't the ban on Disney-related products the reason why Yuzu couldn't have Pooh with him? Yet I saw Javi with the Mickey-mouse tissue box?

My mom struggled to remember his last name for some reason. And one of my aunt's keeps calling him Yasuri 😂

Maybe it's the H? I notice a lot of people call him 'Anyu and that's sort of understandable due to some languages.
Aww, Yasuri is cute! But then your aunt isn't a commentator who's known him for years and then still, out pops Yazanuri! I'm almost tempted to write up all the different things they've called him.

ETA

The ban isn't on Disney per se. IOC has strict regulations about trademarks so IIRC it was Yuzu himself who decided not to take Pooh as it was a famous Disney thing. I don't know about Fernandez, probably thought it wasn't a problem? Not sure.

Ah so it was just to be safe, I see. I just thought it was really weird not to see Pooh there.

I suppose it was because JSF (or Japanese Olympic Committee, maybe) was cautious about patent rights things in Olympics, maybe too cautious, but they might be thinking to avoid any trouble which could lead to disqualifying of their athletes by any chance.

I admit it's Japanese tendency to be precautious, sometimes too much

Agreed. He should really get a special Pooh allowance. I bet he'd get a note from the doctor. Or better yet, just make Pooh a member of team Japan  head of the psychological aid unit or something

My mom now has no problem with his name (I talk to her about him a lot for her to get it wrong anymore  ) but my grandparents just can't say his name right. I even cut it down to just "Yuzu" to make it easier for them and they ended up saying "Zuyu" Though in their defense they can't remember the names of any skater from any country right except Javier's and that's because it's in Spanish.

Didn't someone write all the ways commentators/announcers have mispronounced his name a while back? At the top of my head I remember Yuzuru Hanu at Worlds, the famous Yazunoori Hanyu or idk how the B.ESP guys called him at 2013 GPF (though I don't mind it too much from them because they are very big fans of him lol), I think someone also called him Yazura Hanyu once or twice?

So practice starts in around 20 hours or so? I want him to have a good practice and gain confidence but at the same time, he seems to have better performances when his practices are so-so. Anyways, good luck to Yuzu :cheer:

I have yet to hear any English-speaking commentator to say his surname correctly, they always pronounce Han-yu instead of Ha-nyu.

As for practice, I'm very curious to hear more reports about his hair. :p

Better than Dai-SOOK-ee Takahashi. Poor Dai got his name butchered to hell and back,. As long as the "a" is long it is closer to the right sound. It annoys me when it sounds like the "han" in "hand" when it is actually more like "hah". I can forgive them for not elongating the "u" though. I feel like the American commentators do the best job, at least "Terrance" does. I need to go find an NBC video of him, lol.

Murakami, on the other hand, is lucky that some of the commentators are saying Daisuke properly now.

Edit: If "Terrance" is the non-Johnny guy on NBC then yes his "Hanyu" is one of the better ones.

Terry Gannon. Even he mispronounced Yuzuru's name once when Yuzuru was coming off the ice after the team short program at the Sochi Olympics: "YURUZU".

At Yuzuru's first ice show in Canada, "Mariposa Charity Figure Skating Gala", they misspelled his name twice in the program: "Yuzura Hanyu" and "Yuzuru Hanya". He was introduced as "Yuzuru Hanya" when he skated an early version of "Parisienne Walkways".

Oh it has been a long time since I saw your post, how is your health recently? I hope you well.

The BESP guys pronounce Yuzu's first name better other than Yuzuri, Yazuru, Yuzunari than the other English-speaking commentators who do not say the ru part closer to L.

Too bad I don't understand enough Japanese to listen to their commentary...
