2016-2017 State of Canadian Figure Skating

I haven't been on here much lately but can someone explain to me what Patrick fans are insecure about? Did I miss a memo? :scratch3:

It's just a manufactured fan war that has no basis.

I am a fan of both and some people from both sides can be so hostile. While I was at Skate Canada, Patrick and Yuzuru were joking around after and didn't seem to have much hostility. They are not only competitors, but artists who love their sport and I am pretty sure they aren't as petty as some people on this forum. If only fans could get along a tiny fraction of Patrick and Yuzuru.

Thanks for the info. I have said it before and I believe that skaters likely respect their rivals and take them more seriously than some fans do. Pity to see this.

Go to icexel.ca and rank the skaters. SC is horrible. I just wish they would just give it up and let a 3rd party like icexel.ca take care of things. Then go to ontime.icexel.ca and generate your own schedule based on who you want to watch.

I think the ranking system has some merit. Like now you can see how the juniors are creeping into the top rankings in Canada and overtaking some seniors. And who's the best at novice level. My only concern is skaters doing junior who can't compete internationally as juniors due to age - their points and rankings will be impacted by a lack of international marks.

I am all for the ranking. The concerns are with timeliness and accuracy. SC staff creates everything from scratch in a lousy spreadsheet, it is bound to be a source of errors. icexel imports all the results from each competitions and you can actually play with the data, analyse it and so on.

Can you apply different factors to the results in icexel? Because Skate Canada doesn't weigh all marks equally.

You'd have to export to a spreadsheet I am thinking. Unless you can use the build a program feature?

So then we can't actually compare what SC does with the icexel stuff. Too bad.

Oh yeah, WeaPo are going to be at the tree lighting in NYC this weekend. I wonder what program they'll skate to. Likely the Elvis Medley with "White Christmas".

I find it sad though... Because honestly, there is about half of dozen of Patrick's fans in the fan fest... i mean regular posters... half of those don't even get out to the edge... each time one of us has said something not 100% positive about Hanyu we have been attacked... (so in fact, it's the opposite that is occurring).

I will remember forever the treatment I received when after ACi, I mentioned that i didn't like his music for the LP... OMG... how was that an attack on Hanyu???? I took care to mention that I knew he was out of shape yet managed a wonderful 4Loop... which i was so thrilled to have witnessed live...etc.. and that of course, I understood that for now the program wasn't finished etc... There was nothing but sensible comments in what I wrote... But there were several posters who jumped on me.... telling me I know nothing about music for instance, which is hilarious.... considering my education and profession ;)

So next time, if I go to a competition and he is there, i perhaps will not feel like doing a report... and on top of that, I had even said, it was the report of a fan, not an expert, with some objective but also subjective comments...

I am a fan of so many skaters...I am a fan of figure skating... I just don't understand how it gets so nasty.

The quote Mango took here came from a nice thread where the OP dared to call Patrick the King.... why is that such a sin? So many fans have complained about it that she changed her label... that's called bullying.

It is almost like a trigger. I am saying this from both perspectives but sometimes when we love the skating of someone so much, we get defensive and it is misunderstood. I think a lot of people need to understand that it is okay to love both. I cannot desribe the joy I had watching both Patrick and Yuzuru skate at SC 2016. Both are amazing and although they had lackluster outings (according to their own standards), they are a cut above the rest.

While they are compared a lot, they are also different skaters. When there are different skaters, there are different people who appreciate different sides.

There was another thread talking about fans leaving the sport if Yuzuru stop skating (this can be similar for other skaters such as Yuna, Mao etc.) and I think a lot of those fans are not open to other styles which can be a source of fighting on the forum. (Someone is going to put bullet holes through me for saying it.)

I think some fans get so absorbed in skating with their favs., they loose perspective. Take for example what Eric Radford said this week about some writing cruel things online about D&R. These posters (some of whom are on GS), do not seem to think that perhaps Eric is speaking of them and their words. They refuse to see themselves in this narrative. We all know that skaters use social media and are familiar with what sites are out there...

Yes, we all have our favs. but lets be civil/respectful to other athletes and not attack someone, believing it might somehow benefit a personal preferences. Show the same respect towards other athletes, that our idols do.

I think that I can say I have been defensive and without trying to justify myself, when I joined the forum, because I didn't know better and called myself 4everchan (oh the war declaration!!!!) I was attacked left and right by many posters... always the same few... It's too bad.... So yes, at some point, I got very defensive because the intimidation was too much. However, things have evolved and in general, I would say that things are better. There are a few reasons for that which I won't get into, but one of them is simply the resilience some of us have shown, and of course, the unity we have shown. There are many Canadians fans who watched the GP series and many spoke up when there were bad words about Canada and Canadian skaters and even judges. We are the smallest country among the top federations, and until now, a lot of our skaters were labeled as inferior... People still make fun of D/R after their extreme commitment at bettering themselves on all aspect of the sport. Why? Because they are crazy about other teams.

I totally respect what Yuzuru brings to the sport. He has a style of his own. He has contributed to the sport in his own unique way... so have other skaters before him, so will other skaters after him.

When I read the comments that people would stop watching the sport when he retired, I understood... These folks are not fans of figure skating, but mostly fans of Yuzuru... That's okay. I am a lukewarm fan of certain sports... when there is an athlete I like in one of these sports, I watch it... when there isn't I focus on my true love : figure skating, tennis, diving and swimming... Yup.. I am lucky... I like many sports and many athletes.... I even have my own virtual harem of male figure skaters :)

That's how much I love so many athletes. However, I understand some people do not have the same affection for athletes. Perhaps having trained (swimming) for so long gave me another perspective? I understand the hard work, sacrifices, pain, body fatigue and near destruction being an elite athlete require. So I admire all these kids who put themselves through this... on top of that, they do it in the era of social media... thank goodness that didn't exist when I was spending half my life in speedos... HAHAHAHA

I think a good rule of thumb is to say things you are willing to say to the athlete's faces.

Imagine how funny it would be if people went up to Patrick and told him straight up to retire. I think any skater would react with "What did my existence/10 minutes on the TV screen do to offend you so much?"

Or walked up to Meagan and said her body is ugly. She responded to this in a CBC interview where she said that she can't change her body. In fact, her body is amazing for someone who is a full-time athlete (needs way more calories) and she is vegan (think about the protein she needs to eat without any animal by-products).

Or other skaters as well; some people (not talking about fan wars here btw) keep saying they hate Yuzuru's feminine skating style. If it's not your cup of tea say it's not your preference and move on, some people were very rude about it in a competition thread once.

As a former lifeguard, swimming instructor and competitor in water polo and swimming in the 80's, I feel your ...pain, 4everchan. Thank God my speedo retired when I did and will never be repeated.

I think D/R complain too much about criticism. Everyone gets criticism. Thank God they don't have the profile of a Patrick Chan or Virtue/Moir in Canada or they wouldn't be able to get up in the morning.

Given that Canada has a smaller population base to begin, we tend to have less of a support base versus skaters from say USA, Russia or Japan. As a result, the naysayers at times, can dominate the message on GS, versus skaters who originate from countries with a much larger population base. Canada after all has the same population as the State of California, which makes our representation much smaller on this forum.

Ok? I just don't know why they keep whining about it when it happens to everyone. And it's not even that bad compared to the criticism some other skaters get. They strike me as unbelievably thin-skinned.
