Javier Fernandez

So Javi is in NYC right now, do you think he will head back to Toronto and then Marseille? Or perhaps he might head to France straight from New York?

straight to Marseilles, there is no time left. I'm quite surprised he took this show...

Well, a flight to Toronto from NYC is probably just a couple of hours so it is not a major distance if he chooses to go there first. Very doable. Business travellers pop back and forth all the time, particularly if they take the island airport in Toronto instead of Pearson (the major international airport).

Eppen, thank you so much for providing so many links! It looked like Javi had a lot of fun in NY!
Telemundo is actually a Spanish-speaking American TV chain :) Javi said he had only landed half an hour ago when the rehearsal started (please don't overwork yourself, Javi. You till have the GPF left!). And he was such a gentleman with the interviewer as she asked him if he could teach her how to skate even though she was "old" (since he talk about his desire to be a coach), and he said he could try, that there was no problem as there is no age for that sport

I'm done with my final exams (at last!!), so I can focus on reading the next chapters of Javi's book. In case anyone hasn't read it yet, here are a few new things I've found in chapter 6, titled "Nomad":

After moving out of Russia, they ended up in Ukraine, which wasn’t much different. But he appreciated the routine because it made him focus on his work.

He was very conscious of the economic burden his live in a foreign country represented for his family. He tried to talk to them as often as he could, because he felt the distance wasn’t so great that way and it gave him the strength to keep going.

The last straw was going to Japan to follow one of Morozov’s more promising students. But his parents couldn’t afford the place from Tokyo to the city they needed to go. So his mother figured out a plan to travel by train and bus for several days. He took that option but one of the trains stopped working and he had to travel by bus an even longer distance to a nearby town and wait overnight in the train station there. Sleeping in that station, he cried thinking about his mother.

He hoped Morozov would acknowledge his will to stay with him and follow him everywhere, but he was very professional and assumed that if you wanted to be the best, you had no choice but to follow him around the world. And so his relationship grew distant. He hit rock bottom somewhere in Eastern Europe. He didn’t even know where he was, he just knew he wasn’t home and that this had to come to an end. And so he called his mother and went back home.

He was happy because he was back with his family, but he also felt a bit anxious. He feared he had given up all those years of sacrifices for nothing, but he felt it would pass with the help of his parents. He didn’t want to give up on skating but he felt he couldn’t live without his family (at this time he was barely 20).

His mother referred him to a friend for a massage, but he also made him open up about all the burdens he was carrying. They went down to the root of his problems and he recommended him a book called “The warrior’s path” about a gymnast who breaks his leg in the best moment of his career and goes from being the best to being a friendless no one. But a gas station worker becomes his spiritual guide and helps him see life from another perspective. Javi realized that he had to enjoy every moment of the journey, not just the good one and spend the rest of the time looking forward to the next.

And so, with new energy and the will to face new challenges, he contacted the Spanish Fed to look for a new coach.

I watched the movie about the gymnast. It was interesting. I really feel for Javi's struggles with Morozov and am so happy he found a stable coach and situation with Orser. I'm so happy to see him flourish and reach his potential!

I was able to attend the tree lighting on Friday to see Javi and co. skate live. I couldn't see everything b/c I was standing right behind the camera crews which gave me a partial view. From what I saw, I enjoyed seeing him skate to "I'll be home for Christmas" and charm the crowd. I don't know if even half the people knew who he was but still was nice to see him perform for the large number of New Yorkers and tourists.

(And from someone who recently flew to Toronto from NYC twice in the past year, it really is a quick flight (less than 90 minutes) if there aren't delays into the NYC area. And I recommend the Billy Bishop airport if you are staying in downtown!)

Let's try again... my phone got rid of the first try it seems...

First practice day over with men as the last act. Long day! All were present.

Javi did a longish warm-up with traffic problems when he started to runsaasti through the jumps. Did get most done before his FS music was up as fourth. Not the best runthrough with only the 1st 4T of the quads ok, missed all the combos, but lutz and second 3A ok. And 3Lo. Finished only one spin. Chsq and steps ok - a minor change there. Let's see if you notice it on the comp day ;-)

After that a good 4S-3T and 3F combo, but mostly took it easy, cooling down. Went through SP steps.

Some other stuff that came to mind. He had a short chat with Adam before taking the ice. On the ice, the clothes twins Javi and Patrick sported grey pants and bluish Ts. Javi’s T was tight to please the viewers ;-) After all the runthroughs, his music started again and he went to check all was ok - it turned into lots of laughter :-D could not quite hear what was said. They had done it already earlier - both Malagueña and Elvis plus Elvis restarted again after the session was over. I hope that is a good sign!

I hope also that he is over the starting the group problem... He looked kind of worked in the few pics i've seen from the draw.

More tomorrow after the morning SP practice!

the puzzle has been solved , Javi did go back to his training base after last weekend's show at NYC, after all, he needs to be back for Effie, before he was leaving for GPF; I assume he will stay in Spain until after New Year, for Spanish National, Christmas, shows at Juca & Madrid, and New Year.

Good luck at GPF! Wish him can deliver a clean SP

Eppen, thank you so much for the live report, enjoy your time there and have a lot of fun:luv17:

Not his night tonight. I'm starting to hate the malagueña. But he's always done better in the free programs, so let's hope for a great Elvis night and that he can keep the third or even the second place (the gold is too far away, I'm afraid :( )

He looked sooo sad at the press conference, I wanted to give him a big hug :ghug:

Definitely not his night. He looked really tired... is it just me or did many of the guys look a little more tired than usual? Anyway, that was a forgettable performance and one he will probably not repeat again this year... although that saved landing with his chin an inch from the ice is pretty memorable!! I am sad for him because you know he wants to finally win the GPF, this just makes it more difficult... although not technically impossible. Hope to see a much better free program and I think we will. He looks uber confident with Elvis. And, to be fair, it was an off night for pretty much everyone.

Obviously, Javi was not really good at skating at first, or he has yet mastered a two-quad SP, which in my view, would be very critical for his future competitions. It's the old saying, you can't win a competition in the short program, but you can lose; it is deja vu all over again, he was 12 points behind Yuzu after SP in 16' Worlds, and this time 15 points behind .... he was lucky that Shamo's quad combo jump was not on last night, and the wonder kid Nathan did not deliver either, otherwise he might be ended at 5th place, like he did in 2014'GPF SP :rolleye:

Javi was upset about his poor performance of SP, I felt for him, it seems that he may try too hard or over-excited? Still it was impressive that he could save the landing of Quad Sal:cool:

In the PS, he said that after two GP competitions, his team and he had focused on his FS and did not spend much time in practicing SP, which was a mistake, and I agree. It is not too late, his team and Javi can still fix the problem before Euros and Worlds.

I wish Javi can get over last night soon and have a good rest. Wish he best luck this tomorrow:love:
