The problem with including a jump that has never been landed in competition in a Nationals program is that if the jump fails, the program may well go down the drain with it. "Going for broke" might be a reasonable option for a skater who had no hope of making the World team anyway, but I very much doubt that Mirai sees herself in that position.
This seems like a desperate move to me. Just remember what the 3a did for Alaine Chartrand last year. :shocked:
As for Mirai controlling her nerves, she didn't do much of a job of doing that in her two GP events this year, and the pressure there just doesn't compare to that at Nationals: the rest of the season is at stake.

IIRC this actually did happen when Mirai tried a 3A in the SP.
Haven't heard of an injury. My guess is Ashley just wants to train hard for Nationals w/o another competition to distract her in the meantime. I was surprised to see her on the roster initially since she rarely does Senior B's anyway.
Glad Karen is going in her place, hope she has another great skate like she did at NHK!
Mirai does have a problem nerves. It what's been plaguing her this entire season. The last few times she's attempted the job the rest of her program went down the drain. Next year is best. Plenty of opportunities to perform a triple axel next year.
What I'm worried about is that he may get her to put it in one of her programs have her finish really low. She needs to go to at least Worlds or 4CC so she can have two Grand Prix slots. Ashley never goes to four continents. So Mirai is the most like to go. It's tactically not a good decision
Unless she is really hitting it more than 70% of the time, I would advise her leave it out. Given Mirai's bad luck at Nationals, I wouldn't want to chance it.

IMO, this is the smartest decision she could have made. Traveling all the way to Zagreb will be no easy task for the US skaters and IMO, your body simply needs a rest after traveling all the way to Croatia from the US. I was hoping Gracie would skip this event as well as I think her brain is fried. She's been competing for more than a decade and frankly, I'd rather see her in a sports psychologist's office than another event.

I think Tom is like a proud dad doesn't really see things crystal-clear. Mirai posted a not so great attempt to her triple axel earlier the same day. Still rotated but the landing was

While there are several ladies who can technically do a 3A out there, what matters is also their ability to land everything else, 3A won't win anything =(
I'm happy Mirai is trying this, but imho she also needs to focus on performing close to her current max BV with some consistency before trying to raise it.

Not only that, I'd like to see her performing like the Mirai of old. She used to be such a strong performer and it really does bother me that she looks like she's taking a physic's exam for the first 2/3 of her programs.

Gracie seems to want as much competition experience as possible. It's questionable whether competing or training would be better, given that she is not in top competitive form. I don't know how her practices are going, but her jumps in the GP looked very off-axis, so it seems like focusing on that would be better than traveling to compete in a Senior B.
Yeah, it's difficult to know what's better: having TDF be your last competitive experience, but have a solid block of time to train, or risk another disappointment (or potential success!), and have more segmented training.
I guess at this point it would be hard for it to be worse than TDF...? Especially in the SP.
Senior B are tricky though, specially for top skates such as Gracie.
If Gracie wins, she just did what she was supposed to, no moral reward of any sort
If Gracie fails, she can't do well even in a B competition.
In GP, she at least lost to top folks, and here, she risks losing to some second tier skaters actually. I dunno, the reward doesnt seem great, but if another disaster happens, it could be lots of damage
If she loses to Liza and Carolina, I don't think there is any shame in that. Especially if Liza does her 3A (finally!).
If she can't bear Amber OTOH, there is a serious problem.

Frida80, I agree 100%! Plus, skating against 2 former World Champions might just light a new and powerful fire under Gracie. It's risky but. IMO, it's worth it. If she were to have a spectacular performance and somehow beat either Tuk, or Carolina, it would be huge for her confidence. The risk of course, is that she could lose to Karen Chen which may shake her confidence. I think it's a risk worth taking.

I think this is the perfect opportunity to find her fire. She claimed that she feels out of shape because she has a late start In the season. Now it's two months after SA and she can treat this as a World's preview. Going against both Carolina and Elizabeta will light a fire in her. She still wants that world's Gold. She just needs the passion to ignite.
