Javier Fernandez

Well, it was a tough one for Javi :(
He looked quite upset at the press conference, too. But that 4S save was like magic!
But we know Javi is more of a FS skater and someone who knows how to fight back, I hope he does much better on Saturday :)
Vamos Javi!!

It was a HARD night for a hardcore Javi fan :-( but the 3A was not a friend yesterday all day. He had problems with it already at practice. The morning practice was both hot and cold, just like the warm-up. He tried the 3A three times before getting it right, fell one if the quad attempts and he had to skate first. He spend some time at the board tieing his boot laces. No diversionary tactics yesterday.

I don't think he was tired - there was good speed and all, but the mistakes in the jumps probably had their effect on his performance...

And he looked so down in the press... i saw his parents and Laura a couple of times yesterday, so I hope he got lots of hugs and love from them. More after practice today!

I'll cheer the day he finally skates a clean sp in the final! Only one chance left though. :(

I hope he can also get a calmer Grand Prix season next year. His schedule in the last month has been quite crazy travelling across three continents. And yet he still managed to land most of his quads!

Hope for a great fs tomorrow and then some rest, although I know he won't skip the Spanish Nats.

I recall that he had problems with 3As in the season 11-12, especially later season, Tracy Wilson said that quads sometimes affect 3A, but it seems he had solved the issue since then and has been pretty consistent landing 3As, fingers crossed that he will overcome this tomorrow.

He draw 3 times skating first this season, somehow his team has to figure out a way to let him get used to this placement, what if he has to be the first to skate his SP at 18' Olympics:unsure:

he did not look tired last night, somehow I feel that he is still not comfortable to skate at first, the pacing was not right :noshake:

And he looked so down in the press...

I did not find a clip of the press conference and shall be very grateful if anyone can post a link. Thanks in advance!

First FS practice was not very glorious. A bit subdued, dissatisfied even? He was on second with only part of the jumps done during warm-up. In the runthrough missed a lot because fell the 3A combo. 4T ok, 4S combo with ugly 2T, no 3F combo or 2nd 3A. But good 3Lz and 3Lo. FELL flat on his xxxx in the steps just after sad-sad (you know what I mean, right?)... Did the last spin and finished barely in time with the music. Skated back to Brian shaking his head in apparent disgust.

Some more work on the combos and got them all in the end. For the last minutes Brian made him do lots of basic stroking class stuff, edges, steps, turns; maybe to get his mind away from the jumps?

The press could still be a vaille at ISU fb webpage?

I think his other compromises were what made his GP season so difficult. IIRC he said he chose TDF and COR because those were the only two events he could assist. Because he had the opening flight for Madrid to Tokyo during SA and said he wouldn't be ready for SC. And because Boyang and Yuzuru were host picks, he wasn't able to chose either COC or NHK :(

I'm hearing lots of reports that the ice is really terrible. I mean, when has he fallen on the steps like that? But I also heard it gets better for the skaters going later, and he is second to last, so I hope he can get it done on Saturday.

I doubt the ice is a big problem - unessa it's something that is not visible. This is after all a competition where the ice gets resurfaced every hour or so. Only one group per surface.

He fell in the steps because he seemed to lose balance leaning backwards and slid on the ice backwards on his xxxx for a couple of meters. It happens even for the best of them...

2017 looks already a bit quiter: no Art on ice, no Stars on ice canada at least. The Japanese shows have not yet announced their skaters.

Feeling better after seeing all the rather fabulous competitions tonight!

Good luck to Javi in the FS. I know he seemed a little disappointed with his skate in the K & C after the SP, but he's a fighter! He'll use the SP to motivate himself.

Thinking about the thursday evening and yesterday, I remembered the thing Javi said at the press conference. They have to take a very good look ay what is going on with the short because he is doing it with no problems in practice but that work does not turn to good competition performances. The feeling yesterday was maybe more ftustration than anything else. The moment when you keep banging your head against the wall and the way through it does not come out...

The press conference video is still up at the ISU FB-page. Would get you a link, but am not really mastering the same phone technology...

The day has begun with the first practices.

I really hope Javi saves the best performances for the Pyeongchang. I am starting to get scared for him looking at the current field. I really hope it's not another Dennis Ten moment that might make him miss an Olympic medal. :(

I watched his FP today and really felt badly for Javi. It didn't seem as bad as Patrick's with the falls. I love how he fought in his SP. His current FP is one of my favourites of his overall. I hope he can still podium in Pyeongchang too!

Tough skate for Javi today. I think the GP series is grueling with all the travel and competitions. Maybe partly due to some of his personal commitments prior to the competition, Javi just looked a little tired today. I still believe he'll come back though! And kudos to his fans who went to the competition wearing the orange and yellow toro ears! Those were the die hard fans I'm sure!

First time he was off the podium since Sochi. He is never really performed well at GPF but still manages to podium because he just do well enough to keep the competition at bay. His score this year would have podium 2 years ago but the landscape has changed drastically. 100 TES were a rarity a few seasons ago but now that's just BV for skaters like Jin and Chen. Hopefully he fixes his SP woes because he needs to keep a good margin between him and the rising contenders. LP remains his strong suit and hopefully this outing is one off.

Maybe this is a good lesson for him. I already fell something not right when he did so many events even during season.

The 2nd FS practice midday was both hot and cold. While waiting to get to the ice, he hugged Evgenia who lingered by the rink after the ladies practice.

He took a long time to warm up - the whole 6 min and more - before starting with the jumps. And how easy and beautiful they were: 3T, 3S, 3Lo, 3Lz, 3F combo, 3A, 4S. Like clockwork! A little glitch with the 4S combo - only a 2T and stepout..Tried that twice more but with no perfect result. Then just skating around the rink for a long time while Chen and Hanyu were doing their runthroughs. One 3T to keep the jumps going.

But the runthrough was not easy... 4T barely landed, skipped 4S combo, popped 3A combo, did the 1st spin and got the 4S ok, 3A with a hard lean, no 3Lz, 3F combo ok, 3Lo ok. Steps and last spin ok. Before the session finished a couple tries of 3A combo, the first one ok but not perfect. A spin, some stroking and the session was over.

In the evening, his warm-up was fabulous! Everything worked perfectly, he got to do all his jumps to open space, no problems apart from the 4S combo with only a 2T. Held hs right knee a bit after the quad attempt. And then that... It was hard to believe it was the same guy!

If there was a lesson to learn in this, I hope he takes it and moves on. Next weekend Spanish nationals... Marca quote him saying simply that it happens, sometimes you do good, sometimes not and that he was not the master of he jumps but that they controlled him.

I hoped for a better performance, but was oddly really not even too upset about the while thing. He had more problems in the practices than what i've seen before and despite the great warm-ups the programs did not work. Rather would have wanted to skip witnessing this.

Javi is never down for long, so I'm sure he will bounce back. Nationals and Euros should get his confidence back on track  Skaters are human and they can have some really sucky days, but he fought for that program.

Gala practice over and waiting to get back in. He came for the finale practice wearing a grey hoodie with the hood up, hung out in his own mostly. Had chats with Patrick, Alex and Maia, Cha, Tessa etc. Very subdued mostly. Maybe he is not a morning person? ;-) Some boxing photos were taken by Maia. The finale involves a line of boy-girl pairs and there were not enough girls when Javi, Patrick and Scott were to join the line. Javi and Patrick held hands and poor Scott was left without a pair...

Then he went away for a little while before his turn in the music rotation. It'll be Danny Boy. Then he stayed on almost until the end of the practice and did some jumps and stroking etc.

And there were 2 jumps into the left hand judges side corner to a place he does not use for anything else. Loops, triples but way bigger than his usual 3Lo and had the air of an 4Lo attempt about them... Not a 100% sure as it was over quick and no video to check, but maybe...

E

I am sure Javi will bounce back quickly. It was just an off day for that long program. I think the holidays will rejuvenate him psychologically and the new year will see some fresh energy and Javi will be Javi again.

I'm not worried about Javi - he typically peaks at the end of the season, which is what you are supposed to do. ;)

I hope that Javi stays positive despite not medaling at the GPF. He's got Europeans to look forward to.
