This came out also in a thread sometime ago; everybody in the thread was appalled at the treatment of such a major sponsor from FranchFed. And to think that we risked to have Mr. Gailhaguet as ISU president...well, better not to focus on such individuals!

I'm not even convinced this would have gone much better if they hadn’t decided to shoot themselves in the foot and drive off their big sponsor

Well, even in Japan he has some very dedicated haters you know. I even saw some news outlet being less than kind to him too (usually from Nagoya or Kansai lol). I am not surprised at all if he thinks and is aware that there are people who hate him.
Its unfortunate for the skaters but I completely understand Bompard's decision. The french fed is a mess and treats their skaters like dirt, so I can't say I'm surprised. I'm just glad that no other major competition will be held there in the coming years (sorry french fans)
Sigh. I wonder if this means ISU will rethink about having France as the GP stop. I doubt it will be fixed next year, and if it won't, I don't think it is good in the long run for both FFSG and ISU. Then also I can't think of another country that is capable of hosting GP event regularly?

Thanks for sharing. I'm not sure if I understand this. 2015 TEB was cancelled half way. Why does the sponsor think all the funds would be canceled and return to them? There must be expense organizing the event, renting the space and of course, hosting the first day of the event. And I believe based on the results of the SP, skaters got their reward money.
It just doesn't make sense to me.
And I'm glad they choose to stay in Bordeaux and not move back to the reopened Paris arena. That arena is so close to the shootings and bombing.

When you are at the top you become the target. I hope he manages to deal with it. He certainly isn't alone. I think of people like Serena Williams that stay getting hated on. You just have to do your job and let the chips fall where they may. He is much more adored than he is hated, and he at least understands that.

It's not that the sponsor expected refunds, but rather there was no communication from the french fed, even when the sponsor asked for details.
Maybe someone from Japan can explain this better. But I heard he was loudly booed by a group of Takahashi fans when he won his first national championship. And the reason he has a bodyguard with him is that he was pushed to the glass door one time and injured his hand...but this is all old news.

He really said that? Maybe it might be because some of his wins were controversial/slim, like Olympics and Worlds, and some people don't think he deserves them etc.. Just my opinion, but from the press conference today, he mentioned that (paraphrasing), 'this is figure skating and there are two programs and I did great in the short' and so on, like he had to convince people that he deserved to win even though he had a not so good free. I'm not sure if he has mentioned that kind of things before when he won and he mentioned it at least twice today, even though he won by 10 points...
I tend to overanalyze things though, so it might be just the usual case of 'everyone has haters' and sometimes it gets to him.

There are people who hate him?!?!?! :sad4: Well, I'm not surprised, since he's a celebrity, but I feel like he's relatively...well...uncontroversial/not-hated for a celebrity. Even amongst skaters, haha. Who can hate this cinnamon roll..

I understand Worlds, but I'll never understand Olympics. Everyone messed up, that's the truth, and Yuzuru messed up less than most of the other gold medal contenders.
I don't want to go there lol because there has been mixed information regarding that. But let's just say, Yuzuru is an outlier skater even in Japan. He does not necessarily come from the two biggest skating powerhouses, like Chukyo group or Kansai group, yet he soared to the top of the world. Most of the top skaters in Japan has affiliation with these two at one point in their career, iirc.
But all that matters is he is loved by so many now. Of course there will still be naysayers and haters, but the number of people who respect and adore him far triumph that who does not. So I don't think it should be something that is bothering.
I wonder if those people remember Viktor Petrenko, Kristi Yamaguchi and Midori Ito all bombed their FS at the Olympics and still medal too (The 2 former is an OGM even).
They are still Legends, nobody cares. You are defined as a legend not from 1-2 title you win or how you win it, but your overall skating career and your legacy to the FS field, in my opinion. (/hope and legacy plays in the background while typing this)

I once had the unfortunate experience of clicking on a Chinese thread without checking the title... couldn't believe the downright foul things being said with the most crude language... scarred for life :sad4:

People who hate are never really logical anyway... And he really wants to be the 'absolute champion' that no one can deny.
Still, hopefully what he means is his 'skating' though and not him as a person. Not many people seem to like his skating in the other big FS forum, which is why I hang out here more.
