2016-2017 State of Canadian Figure Skating

Start orders have been posted and veronik mallet isn't listed. Is she retiring? I haven't seen anything on it.

On Facebook today, there was a picture of Veronik Mallet on a page, maybe hers. My French isn't that great, but I think it said she was back on the ice after two months. I guess she's not ready to compete yet, though.

I just looked at the Canadian Men's final flight. I'd pay for Nationals just to watch that group of Men perform. So much Talent. Of course, I always want Patrick to win and I'd really like to see Kevin skate well. Best of luck to all......Oh I forgot that Alaskan cutie, Keegan Messing. Good Luck to all.....

This "Thread" was slowly making its way to Page 3. Before that happens, I just wanted to say, what a great season it has been for fans of Canadian skating. A record number of medalist in the Grand Prix season. I wish our team the same success in 2017 as we look forward to Nationals, 4CC's and Worlds. So proud of all that has been accomplished by these athletes, and may their success continue in the new year and beyond!

I think overall Canada has the strongest team. Hopefully they can take home a gold for the team event, and maybe again in 2018.

Well, the ISU team event has been reorganized as a regional one, but agree that an Olympic team gold would be very sweet.

If Ziotic is referring to 2017 ISU World Team Trophy, it continues to be a competition among six national teams (as in the previous four editions).

Not to be confused with Team Challenge Cup, the competition that was first held in 2016 as a USFS initiative -- for teams representing three continents.

I agree, this season has been one of the best seasons for the Canadians and for me as a fan. It is no secret how much I love Patrick but, I also really like Kevin Reynolds and Keegan Messing. With the Return of Tessa and Scott, I think a new fire has ignited within the entire Canadian Team. I hope they're able to set themselves up for a successful Olympic season by gaining 3 spots in every discipline. I have been VERY excited by my Canadian Show Girl Kaetlyn Osmond and her teammates Gabby Daleman and Alaine Chartrand. They are all looking great!!! Canadians, Which Pair Team do you think will be the Silver Medalist at Nationals this year? Assuming Meagan and Eric are going to repeat as Champions is there a second pair with a shot at making the final flight at Worlds.

Thanks, I was confused. But then, was there in fact a World Team Trophy in 2016....?

There was no World Team Trophy in 2016.

World Team Trophy always was supposed to take place every other year (odd-numbered years).
The first year was 2009.
Plans were in place for 2011 to be the second year ... until the terrible tsunami :(.
What should have been the 2011 edition of WTT had to be postponed to 2012.
Then the schedule got back on track with 2013 and 2015 -- and now 2017.

It was only an unfortunate aberration that WTT was held both in 2012 and 2013, but those consecutive years evidently have caused some lingering confusion (which has been apparent numerous times on GS) as to whether it is an annual competition.

The introduction of the new Team Challenge Cup in 2016 seemed to exacerbate the confusion, although TCC never was intended to replace WTT.

I REALLY hope whichever two ladies make the world team will do well enough that there will be three spots next year. Canada has 3 very talented skaters and it's such a shame that one has to be left behind. It really is.

I do have a soft spot for Alaine but I think Kaetlyn and Gabby going clean at Worlds has a much higher chance of getting Canada 3 spots. Unfortunately Alaine has too many jump errors that usually add up.

I believe that a number of us are hoping that Alaine can turn things around at nationals, but share your concern that her jump issues have resurfaced in international competitions.

If she were to place first or second, I believe that many of us would very much wish for Skate Canada to send her to another international B and/or 4CC before making any final decisions on this years Worlds team. It's in everyone's interest to maximize the likelihood that Canada comes away with three ladies slots for 2017-2018.

Skate Canada did that few years ago with Phaneuf and Lacoste. Osmond did not get that opportunity last year with placing 3rd at Nationals only 0.1 behind second. Osmond went on to beat Chartrand at 4CC.

Uhm, I believe there is a misunderstanding. No one has suggested that Alaine should be provided the opportunity to go to Worlds if she isn't able to turn her performance around by nationals. But she is the defending national champion.

We've discussed earlier in the thread if even if Alaine were to successfully retain her national title, many of us would be concerned for her to have an opportunity to get the experience and to demonstrate that she can deliver the same level of performance at an ISU event before granting her a berth for Worlds. She as much as Kaetlyn or Gabby will want the strongest team to get out there to get that third slot for next season.

This is the opposite of the Phaneuf and Lacoste situation.

And yet more different from a situation wherein Kaetlyn would have been given the opportunity to compete at Worlds when she was still in the relatively early stages of what could have been a career ending injury. I'm not sure that Kaetlyn had even obtained the minimum TES required for Worlds, but it would be a hard call to dump the national champion who had beat Kaetlyn by more than 0.1 on the basis of a single superior performance at 4CCs.

I would note that Kevin Reynolds [who didn't have the TES for Worlds] and was on a comeback after a significant surgery] also showed great progress at 4CC, but a berth at Worlds was out of the question for him. Frankly, I strongly believe that both Kevin and Kaetlyn are better off for having concluded last season early and coming back this fall stronger than ever before without the shadow of a rehabilitation performance at Worlds to dog them.

Well, arguably last season's placements at 4CC and worlds had less riding on them in comparison to the placements for the ladies this season, with an Olympic year coming up, and the number of skaters in the discipline is dependent on this year's placements.

True....though I wish Kevin made the TES mins for 2016 Worlds because then I could have potentially seen him skate and have another wish of mine come true. Alas it didn't happen. Now my only chances will be either 2018 Canadian Nationals or Skate America 2017 if he gets selected (Which I think it's a VERY SLIM chance tbh). I'm DETERMINED to see him skate at least ONCE in my lifetime.

i understand you... that's why i'm going to nationals this year...to see patrick.... i'll let you know how kevin is live :)

I wish I could have gone this year. But cheerleading and plus me and my family went to Hawaii for vacation (And we came back home today) so....yeah two big trips in a period of a month is not a good idea lol XD.

Yes please do since streams for the top 6 are hard to find....which might do good for my sanity.

Maybe it was due to Kaetlyns relative short period from her injury. She had the TES requirements from winning Nebelhorn. Skate Canada seem to place a lot of weight on Nationals. If Kaetlyns finishes 3rd again this year what will they do?
