2016-2017 State of Canadian Figure Skating

wait... :) yes... Kaetlyn and Gabby have earned bigger respect internationally through great performances throughout the GP season... but let's not discard Alaine's chances... I have seen her fight at ACI and land just about everything in the free... she almost won that event and she was on fire.... ice is slippery... she could rank in the top two at Nationals... of course, skatecanada could keep her home despite that but i am not ready yet to think of it as a 2 women party....

go canadian girls!!!!

I'm actually hoping that whatever the outcome, Skate Canada grants her at least one more international assignment in the New Year. Either 4CC or another senior international...

Even if she nails nationals, I would have mixed feelings about Worlds...The stakes are far too high for Canada in getting 3 slots...for her too.

She and we need to see that she can skate well this season in a big venue that she can't do a simulation in ahead of time. TD Place in Ottawa is too much home to present that challenge. While in the past, she seemed to have done better in competitions far away, whatever formula Michelle Leigh has Alaine using for preparation is not working as well on the road...

i agree...

i hope skate canada reserves itself the right to look at 4CC results before making their call if Alaine is in the top 2. She's been struggling this year on the GP circuit. I think she would agree that it would be preferable for her to be at the olympics than go to worlds this year having to qualify 3 spots... tough duty to do...

Just noticed this tweet from Gabby Daleman wrapping her Challenge experience...

"Ended this week with a New Canadian Record!!!! Was fierce in Montreal now time to be fierce in Ottawa."

https://mobile.twitter.com/gabby_daleman/status/805545855419908100

......and on my part I note that once again the word "fierce" is said in a positive way about our Canadian women....:2thumbs:
:cheer:

But it still wondering why the rest is of skating fandom outside Canada seems to take delicate skating "princesses" as the ideal....

Whereas our idea of a princess seems more in the sword-wielding, chariot driving siren kind of mould...

Scott "no filter" Moir?

I still like when he said "I look like a blueberry" about his FD outfit.

My favourite Scott "No-Filter" Moir moment was from a few years ago at the 2012 world team trophy, while he and Tessa and the rest of Team Canada were in the kiss n cry after getting their FD marks, he says as clear as day: "Oh my god, I hate this event" and everyone could hear it on the microphone.

I know people get up in arms about this incident every time it's mentioned, meanwhile I thought it was hilarious. Scott was essentially saying what most of the other skaters were thinking. WTT is very draining, especially since all the big competitions like Worlds are done and over with. I suspect most skaters would rather get started on next year's programs right after Worlds instead of having to continue to train their old programs for a "fluff competition".

Was S/B even an option here? I have the feeling you could be Chan, Virtue/Moir, D/R or Osmond.

My free spirited soul was torn between painting in Italy and adventures in China, ancientpeas, as both are on my bucket list. That one could have gone either way.

Dropping a line here in case anyone wishes to pick up the ice dance retirement conversation...

And note, because I'm not sure that it's been picked up on elsewhere, that Skate Canada's news release states that both Alex and Paul are returning to Michigan in January to complete their degrees in political science. And it says that they both plan to pursue graduate studies....Makes sense to get back on time to do the winter semester and get the support of faculty for grad school applications....

From Retirement thread:

Not exaggerated, though I believe the poster missed one returning team. Mistakes are possible, but here is what I can remember or tell by the current assignments:

2016 Nationals results:
1. Weaver & Poje-returning to Senior Nationals
2. Gilles & Poirier-returning to Senior Nationals
3. Paradis & Ouellette-split
4. Paul & Islam-retired
5. Orford & Hill-retired
6. Poulin & Servant-split (not sure if either has an interest in continuing?)
7. Delmaestro & Lum-split (she has teamed up with Razgulajevs)
8. Soucisse & Tanguay-split (she has teamed up with Firus)
9. Daigle-Roy & Barthe-split (he has a new partner)
10. Collins & Firus-split (he has teamed up with Soucisse)
11. Howe & Jackson-no idea, but they weren't at the Skate Canada Challenge so they won't be at Nationals
12. Linden & Voldeng-injured, still together
13. LeBlanc & Seymour-no idea, but they weren't at the Skate Canada Challenge so they won't be at Nationals
14. Campbell & Granger-returning to Senior Nationals. (I assume. They finished 7th out of eight teams at the Skate Canada Challenge).

Also:
Edwards & Pang (former Junior World medalists who missed nationals last season due to injury)-split

Juniors:
1. Bent & Razgulajevs-split, he has a new partner
2. Lajoie & Lagha-competing at Junior Nationals
3. Meng & Meng-split
4. Howland & Malette-Paquette-split, he has a new partner
5. Fisher & Brown-split (I believe I am remembering this correctly)
6. Taillefer & Chan-competing at Junior Nationals
7. Wu & Mirzakhani-competing at Junior Nationals
8. Charky & Daze-no idea, but they weren't at Skate Canada Challenge
9. Cipriano & Keeping-Mura-split, she has a new partner
10. Croteau-Villaneuve & Hough-split
11. Stairs & Royer-competing at Junior Nationals
12. Samoisette & Seidel-split, he has a new partner
Oliver & Waddell-no idea, but they weren't at Skate Canada Challenge
Marier & Wong-split, he has a new partner

Also:

Whitley & Graham (JGP participants this season, 5th at Junior Nationals in 2015 and injured last season)-split

The good news, I suppose, is that there were six more junior teams at Skate Canada Challenge this year than last.

On FSU in May it was reported Howe & Jackson has split, since Roxette Howe was on IPS, she no longer is there though. So either she's skating or retired. I know Melinda Meng was on IPS too, but she's no longer there.

From the list, and with Paul/Islam retirng, V/M, W/P and G/P has literally no rivals for podium. They can do mistakes and still be there.

So are all these splits/retirements because of V/M return and lack of hope for Olympics? Or lack of support, like not enough international assgnemnts? Lack of money? Not enough shows to perform and earn money? We see from USFSA they like to send their teams to Challengers, even outside of top5 and their teams seem to stick together, even though top3 for Olympics looks already established more or less.

With all these splits and retirements, there are only 3 senior teams that actaully have some international experience together. All the other teams are new, probably not gelled properly even. That also means, that in next season only top3 will get GP assignemnets (no ranking points, no top24 SB list), unless SC will invite one of the other teams. I'm actually very sad it loks like it looks. I know Olympics might've been outside of reach for all these teams, but 4CC next season was very possible. I'm sure at least one of the teams will not go to 4CC in order to prepare for Olympics, if not all of them. (But first SC would have to let them earn minimums, and well I'm not sure how that would go.) Huge chance V/M would not go to Worlds 2018 too. I kind of fell that Worlds 2018, apart of G/P and W/P (if they are going) will look bad for Canadian Ice Dance now. I think they may loose 3 spots, unless there is some new formed team, that will exceed expectations, but top Junior team from last season has split too...

So what do you think of it long term wise?

what i think long term wise :

For many many years, Canada has been blessed with elite dance teams.... but actually, it was usually just the one good team.... B/K, D/L who had that nasty fall at olympics or would have perhaps be in contention for a lower step of the podium but didn't contend at worlds.... and then V/M... during V/M's reign, Canada funded sports much better because of Vancouver 2010... did it have an incidence in promoting Ice dance? I am not sure as it's not like our skaters have a lot of a tradition going to challengers and what not... However, a few more teams emerged, peaking more or less right now.... 3 stellar teams, most likely all in top ten or even some say could all be in top 7-8... That's incredible.... it has never happened in Canada. Fabulous. Yes, there are no heir... but if only one of these three teams keeps going, G/P, after 2018, we will be back to a potential top 5-6 team... with a bunch of a new talent... nothing new.

Will we lose spots? Yes.. but i believe that most of the times, those spots are lost because other countries deserve them better. We really didn't need a third spot last year if that team didn't qualify for the free dance did we?????

I just think people are taking for granted that Canada has to have depth... traditionally we haven't had any depth except perhaps in men... which is much more worrisome right now than Ice dance....

Pairs, is similar to dance... we will see if anyone stays but at least, there are a couple of young teams on the rise.... who are in the right place in their development to start really challenging post 2018... and who do actually gets sent to international events, even GP...

Ladies... Again... WOW!!! when was the last time we have not even 2 but 3 competitive ladies??? NEVER....

So again, I do believe this is Canada's best team ever right now, leading up to Sochi..... in all fields we have top 5 or even podium contenders... not only that, but if one falters, another skater/team could step in... it's fabulous times...

My approach, better enjoy this to dwell on what will happen in two years as honestly, we have never had huge depth in all disciplines and have been on top since Vancouver.... I doubt that Canadian skating will be in complete doom for too long. As of course, when there are no depth, the top skater in each discipline gets help and encouragement from the federation to compete and develop.

Could there be more funding? Could there be more potential identified? Could there be a development plan to make sure we don't hit a dip after such a high?

YES. But honestly, some of these teams who benefited from this sort of support didn't manage to get to the higher circles anyways...

Finally, I'd like to mention how difficult the sport is for these athletes... by the time they are in their twenties, they have almost all had big injuries, are in pain physically, emotionally and usually financially.... BUT THEY ARE ADULTS ! there is a life after sport whatever sport may be.... and these talented and smart adults have many doors open to them. If they choose to focus on their studies, that's amazing...

We all felt that Joannie retired a bit too soon... I mean even a couple years after retiring, her results at Japan Open for instance would lead to think that she would still have been in the elite in the world, was Canada was rebuilding..... but look where she is now... in medical school.

What a great role model? She could have stayed in the sport forever, but she also had other life goals. Patrick wants to stay in the sport... but he's also a business man... Jeffrey wanted to finish his engineering degree... he even decided to pass on home Olympics, and retired after winning gold at worlds, just two years before Vancouver... wasn't that weird??? Yes... but he had plans of his own.

We have to also respect those adults' decisions.

One last example from another sport....

Downhill Skiing. Larisa Yurkiw.... Canada decided to cut funding for their downhill team and focus on the medal hopes that were all in the technical events for ladies. Larisa had a very goal to go to the games, to keep racing and so on... She paid her way through it... crowdfunding... etc.... She managed four podiums during world cups... and finished 3rd overall one season... despite the federation not showing ANY support.... so I do believe that we cannot just blindly blame federations when it comes to troubles... some athletes have fought their way to the top... without any help. I think it's a bunch of circumstances that lead to retirements.... Larisa after finally having some success retired... old body... that's life for you...

FUNDING.....sounds like something new is on the horizon....

We are in what's known in Canada as the federal pre-Budget season. Canada runs on the British Parliamentary system, which means that Budget secrecy is sacrosanct...No one outside government may know what will be in the federal Budget until it is tabled in Parliament by the Minister of Finance...usually in late February or early March. After that, the Budget goes through the Parliamentary process and related legislation is passed over the course of the spring. [If it does not, an election must be held.]

BUT in the late fall, the government holds public pre-Budget consultations, and from those the public and media begin to get a sense of what stakeholders are putting forward, and what Parliamentarians are backing...

Canadian athletes have been making representations for increasing in the amount of the current allowance [currently a maximum of $CDN 18,000 annually] received by carded national athletes without a reduction in the total number of spots. They have also been asking for increases in the tuition support [currently capped at $CDN 5,000 for each year as a carded athlete] that athletes can use either while carded or within 5 years of retirement.

During the pre-Budget consultation, athletes representatives were successful in making their case to the influential House of Commons Finance Committee. This committee makes recommendations to the Minister of Finance, and its report included a recommendation that athlete assistance funding be increased without reduction in the number of athletes funded. It's about as good a signal that something is coming in the Budget as can be hoped for.

As well, 9 Canadian universities have been identified as joining in a new partnership with the federal funding authority Sport Canada and others on a new educational initiative....One university [Queens] has committed to educate up to 1,200 current and former athletes over 8 years through a partnership with its business school to help them to transition to professional life.

Hello jolly folks of Golden Skate. Mango is back from the deep freezer. Just thawing out now. :)

So let us a do a quick GPF recap.

Julianne & Charlie: That SP was...nope. Something went wrong between Challenge and GPF. They'll get used to it again. Didn't get in enough time with it, I am guessing. It's hard to change a program and compete with it so soon, eh? The FS was better though still not their best. It saved their butts from finishing last, though. They need to work on their SBS jumps. I wonder how much of that is affected by how late Charlie started to train figure skating seriously. Well, there's no where to go but up for these two. Stay healthy, crush it for the 2nd half of the season. Rostelecom & GPF are in the past.

Meagan & Eric: They've realized that falling on the throw 3A is costing them huge amounts of points. Meagan put out a request for opinions about whether they should keep the throw 3A or do a throw 3F which may even get them positive GOEs. Elvis Stojko has also commented. From Meagan's social media it seems like they didn't have time to effectively implement changes they made after NHK. But now with time before Nationals they can decided. What do you guys think? The hole they got into with the SP was too deep for them to dig themselves out of with the FS. I think I'd rather see them be safe and consistent (those PCS will suffer more otherwise), and put the throw 3A in exhibitions (like they did the throw 2A during Stars on Ice 2016), coming back to it early in the Olympic season if it works out in the ~8 months of exhibitions they'll do.

The one thing I love about these two is that they don't stop thinking of their competitive skating while doing all the show stuff. Here they are practising side by side 3Lz because Meagan will have none of those errors: https://www.instagram.com/p/BOCi6vIgz1d/

Kaetlyn Osmond: Wow. National records for the SP and total score. The highest score ever by a Canadian lady. Kaetlyn is breathing rarefied air. The PCS suggest the judges are considering her as a serious contender. If it were not for the doubled triples and the singled 2T in the FS Ms. Osmond would be on the podium. She did look a little spent in the choreographic sequence of the FS. Considering she finally landed that pesky 3Lo it's fair to say she's working on her problem areas. With more time and effort we may see a better performance at Nationals. She's a lock for the national title.

One of our estemeed posters suggested that Kaetlyn should be skating to Turandot instead of La Bohème. Elena Radionova chose that music so it would have been quiet dull to have two programs to the same music. Even within Canada Jones/Reagan are skating to it. Kaetlyn clearly enjoys skating to La Bohème. Her PCS even with errors suggests that the judges liked the program too. An esteemed poster was also waiting for Kaetlyn to score over 200 points outside of Canada. She did just that. Maybe some esteemed posters will start respecting this young lady eventually...

Patrick Chan: Three hurdles down, a few more to go. A clean SP, with level 4 step sequence, and a clean 4S. He needed less than a quarter to hit 100 points in the SP. Maybe he'll find the change in PyeongChang. The pressure to land the 4S was big and distracting. He told Marina in the kiss and cry he focused so much on it that he's neglected training the 4T. So it's back to Canton to train the 4T, 4S, and 3A. Patrick's also got to train his mind to keep calm during situations like this. Apart from those falls I think he held up well - Worlds 2016 Chiddy would be popping jumps but GPF 2016 Chiddy kept it together despite the errors. There were also no angry outbursts or arrogant comments. I doubt that's enough to placate his detractors but for Patrick it's a start. Working on becoming clutch will do him wonders as the Olympics get closer.

Tessa Virtue & Scott Moir: A new level of comfort in their performance. There were no nervy twizzles. No major misteps. They were confident and calm. Scott's sangfroid in dealing with the FD music issue was admirable. I have noticed Scott is more assured now. I think it's the effect of their training - the run throughs between Skate Canada & NHK appear to have brought out this certainty. And they are happy. With their skating, their choreo, their training situation. They are friends with their rivals, and you can see that. It's not some kind of effort made for TV cameras. I want to give thanks to David Wilson for his involvement. They recruited him to choreograph an exhibit for them which they performed in the summer. The last lift in the SD was in that exhibit. But that program helped them develop a relationship with him and Marie-France as choreographers. So thanks David. And of course, to the Gadbois team. Now if Scott could stop looking like a blueberry maybe we could all be satisfied. :)

Special shout out to Keegan Messing who won the bronze medal at Golden Spin of Zagreb. And to Roman and Nic for placing 7th and 11th respectively.

Medals count
15 gold, 10 silvers, 12 bronze = 37 medals in total

In other news...

Piper Gilles & Paul Poirier's new pattern dance is entitled "The Maple Leaf March".
https://twitter.com/cjlanecoach/status/809441320246935553

Now that I think about it, the inspiration for their disco SD likely came from the rink decorations. It's such an old school rink. And now, it'll be in an ISU pattern dance video.

Kaitlyn and Andrew seem to have had a great time at Christmas on Ice in Japan: https://www.instagram.com/p/BOPGcfAF9eY/

Kaetlyn :love:: https://www.instagram.com/p/BOLi3McD6ZW/

New ice dance team? https://www.instagram.com/p/BN0lcjmA_yX/

Also some of you may know this already but Roxette Howe, who did ice dance with Jean Luc Jackson last season (11th at Nationals), is a YouTube celebrity. Her brother skates junior pairs with Ami Koga for Japan. This is her channel: https://www.youtube.com/channel/UCsqZHVmdjjc2VqC5-C0-jCA
I think she's very pretty. :)

Forgot to include - Skate Canada's holiday video. Santa Chiddy! https://youtu.be/fvPUC6tl0sw

dear Mango!!! welcome back from the freezer!!!! thanks for such wonderful posts!!!!

my take on Meagan is similar as elvis's I think they even should have included the 3A in their LP this year...to get double mileage on it...

I am guessing that she wants to do the flip throw in the short in the possibility that they go for the 4lz in the long???

I am getting confused by her approach right now....

GO FOR IT NOW... or play safe until Olympics... I don't think trying new things in the fall will be worth the risk... if they don't medal at their GPs and what not, they will lose their status of real contenders which is a must in Olympic years.

Time for my pairs joke of the season : maybe they should do a stolbova-klimov and withdraw from the rest of the year to work on their elements ;)

So who would your "new dance team" be?? I don't recognize these kids...

Acro Yoga shows you how fit Ruest Wolfe are... omg....

And finally... cheers to the cutest santa ever.. in your avatar, mind you, Skate Canada's holiday video is awesome... I cannot unsee Nam's shoulder rolls ;) hahahaha

I don't think the 'esteemed poster' has the wherewithal to accept things as they are, and give this young lady the respect she has earned and deserves.

In other news Mango, ...I hear Crow tastes better with ketchup. :) Perhaps our friend can advise us, from his own culinary experience.

I ask myself what respect she would get from the esteemed poster and others in the same camp, if there was a USA behind her name and not a CAN! I also think her PCS would be even higher if that were the case.

Agreed, her PCS from the Grand Prix for the SP, IMO, should have been in the 36-37 range, bringing her total score to a 77 or thereabouts. Yup, that would be about right. As it was, there was little separation between 2,3 and 4, when the reality of that performance was, it deserved higher scores. Even the Brits commented on the conservative nature of Kaetlyn's PCS.

Start orders have been posted and veronik mallet isn't listed. Is she retiring? I haven't seen anything on it.

She was injured, but there has been little public information...

Most recent thing that I can find is an interchange with fans on ASKfm chat posted November 4th. The fan said that she/he is confident that Veronik will recover from her injury and return in force, and tells her not to give up.

http://ask.fm/veronikmallet/answers...utm_medium=social&utm_campaign=answer_own#_=_

Veronik responded saying "thank you".
