2016-2017 State of Canadian Figure Skating

Hopefully, if she were to finish 3rd, they would send her to Worlds anyways. At the very least send all three to 4CC and then make a final decision.

Alaine and Gabby represented Canada deservedly last year, as Kaetlyn finished behind them at Nationals and as International results demonstrated, she was still working on her recovery after a close to 2 year absence from the sport.

Based on international results this year, it would be difficult to not consider Gabby and Kaetlyn, as favorites to represent Canada in 2017.

Canadians...Why have I never heard of Nicolas Nadeau?? I just looked at the Canadian Rankings and he's ahead of Keegan and Nam......:confused2:

Mr. Rice, Nicolas had an incredible year last year, finishing with a Silver at Junior Worlds, behind Daniel Samohin, with the best 3A in the business. This year he was plagued with injuries and just now starting to compete but not yet up to the form he had last season. He has all the qualities to be a top contender, that's for sure.

Holy Cow!!!! He's like a baby Eman......I mean that as a huge compliment, I loved Eman. Thank you for leading to him.

I agree, this season has been one of the best seasons for the Canadians and for me as a fan. It is no secret how much I love Patrick but, I also really like Kevin Reynolds and Keegan Messing. With the Return of Tessa and Scott, I think a new fire has ignited within the entire Canadian Team. I hope they're able to set themselves up for a successful Olympic season by gaining 3 spots in every discipline. I have been VERY excited by my Canadian Show Girl Kaetlyn Osmond and her teammates Gabby Daleman and Alaine Chartrand. They are all looking great!!! Canadians, Which Pair Team do you think will be the Silver Medalist at Nationals this year? Assuming Meagan and Eric are going to repeat as Champions is there a second pair with a shot at making the final flight at Worlds.

Good question on pairs....My sense is that it is likely to be Séguin/Bilodeau and Ilyushechkina/Moscovitch contending for the second spot on the podium.

As it stands before Christmas, despite a lack of clean performances in the their two GP events, I would put I/M as having the potential to reach second. While they were pleased to have two bronze podium finishes, they were dissatisfied with not making the GPF, and will be pushing for improvements through to the end of the season.

I was hopeful after S/B's good showing with the Cirque du Soleil SP at Challenge that things were coming back together for what we'd thought of as the "Consistent Canadians" up until the time of Julianne's injury at the end of last season. But we've seen Julianne with a grim game face in practice photos since Rostelecom cup, and by the GPF Charlie looked ready for battle. For a team that used to find joy in their skating to hold back personal griefs, this seems a very difficult year.:(

Moore-Towers/Marinaro were still very much in recovery mode at Challenge. Kirsten's concussion was an undeniable setback after their promising finish at Worlds. While their SP at Challenge was promising, their FS wasn't really competition ready...missed lift and lack of synchronization were head shakers at that point. Hoping that they are in stronger form by nationals, but with a ways to go to catch S/B and I/M, and those two teams clearly pushing for improvements since the GP season, I suspect they will be 4th again.

The competition for the 5th national team spot is also likely to be fierce. Ruest/Wolfe looked great and on an upward path at Rostelecom and their GP debut, but Challenge was not what one would have expected for them. On the other had, Jones/Reagan had their ups and downs this season, but showed well with their gold at the 2016 US International Classic Challenger senior B, and a solid performance at Challenge. Edge to Jones/Reagan going into nationals.

Does anyone know what the issue seems to be with Seguin and Bilodeau after such a consistent season last year? I was hoping they'd be able to build on that this season, but seem to be struggling with the side-by-sides. Did the loop throw them off?

I was wondering the same thing although their struggles are with more than just SBS jumps.

Good analysis! I am not Canadian but have become a real fan in all disciplines. I really like Katelyn Osmond's LP this year and the way she attacks her jumps and has such style with her movements to the Italian classics. Patrick is...well...for me, the best; the way he flies across the ice and has such a natural movement. Not a big Duhamel and Radford pairs fan but I love the positions and lifts of Ilyushechkina/Moscovitch. They need to solidify their jumps but I love Luba's balletic, spritely style. Julianne and Charlie were such rising stars that their recent struggles are puzzling and I hope they are able to conquer. Although Virtue and Moir have certainly returned with a bang, it's Gilles and Poirier that have caught my eye. I also very much like Weaver and Poje.

Welcome to the discussion slider11! :)

We're that glad that Canadian skating is generating excitement, but also welcome analysis and information sharing about Canadian skating from juvenile on up.

Canada is a long time skating country, and a presence since the earliest international competitions, but Canada has a relatively small population so we are relatively few on the boards.

One of the things that many of us are coming to realize is that there is a bit of a different feel to Canadian skating. And that Canadian skaters, coaches and judges may emphasize different things than the other 'big' skating countries. Ideally, these national differences all contribute to enriching skating globally.

TGee, I'm also a very big fan of a lot of the current Canadian skaters (and many past one)--and of many skaters in general. I noticed your comment here and (and perhaps others from someone else in the thread, I can't recall), which kind of made it sound like this discussion thread was really intended for fans from Canada. I've been reading the thread, as I do most threads in the Edge, but not really commenting because I wasn't sure if that was the intent/understanding when the thread was created. (Also didn't comment because I read GS far more than I comment because my schedule often means I have time to quickly read some things but not to comment. LOL)

I was a bit confused because I never thought that, for example, the Russian ice dance thread was just for fans who live and/or are from Russia or the US Men's thread was just for Americans, etc. So I'm glad to see that it was my misunderstanding because, as I mentioned, I really like a lot of Canada's skaters, including Elladj Balde (both his programs are amazing, and I agree with the bESP announcers who say he's going to have an amazing show career--which has already started, of course!), Patrick Chan (love his Sunday Morning EX), Kevin Reynolds, Keegan Messing, Nicolas Nadeau, Liam Firus, Alaine Chartrand, Kaitlyn Osmond (LOVE this year's SP), Gabby Daleman (like both of her programs this year, especially her LP), Duhamel /Radford (admire their tenacity and commitment to challenging themselves, even if their programs aren't always as "pretty" as many of the other pairs I like), Seguin / Bliodeau (love, love them, and I have rewatched their SP that they're reusing from last season many times--I think they're so charming!), Moore-Towers / Marinaro (still miss Kirsten with Dylan but am rooting for this team, too), Ruest / Wolfe (i think they have a lot of potential), Weaver / Poje (longtime fan, really hoping for a strong comeback for them, love both their programs this season), Gilles / Poirier (love their spunk and originality and think they've improved a lot), and more.

Also Kurt Browning is one of my all-time favorite skaters ever! :)

Sorry I guess this is my too-long way of saying that I think Canada has a lot more fans than it may appear on these boards. I'm sure I'm not the only one who might not always show it but am very interested and supportive of them. Looking forward to Canadian Nationals in a few weeks (and crossing my fingers for a working stream)! :hap10:

^^ A great post here Weathergal, and I think I speak for all in welcoming every person to this Thread, that wishes to contribute. Post long and as often, as you wish.

I too and looking forward to Nationals as I'm going through figure skating withdrawals at the moment and soon will need a fix ;)

I'm a big fan of many of the current Canadian skaters too maybe that's because I'm always attracted by amazing skating skills which most of them have. I'm a huge fan of Tessa&Scott since 2008. Now Patrick is one of my favorites in the current field. I also love Kaetlyn, Piper&Paul, Kaitlyn&Andrew and Lubov&Dylan.
It's nice to follow their state through this thread. Thank you for updating.😘😘

It's nice to see more posters in this thread. With Nationals coming up the excitement is building. And with the 150th birthday of Canada this year Canadians are going to be partying most of the year. So please join us for the fun. :)
