I don't think I have seen a Poster say "better" than Evgenia, but there have been comments re her PCS being held back a bit. Even the British commentators have mentioned it after 2 of her SP performances, stating, "ahhh...the judges haven't been over kind to Kaetlyn Osmond", after the CoC, and again at the GP Final, "I am surprised her presentation marks were not better, given the way she performed that program".

On both of these skates regarding her PCS, I tend to agree.

I see a change in Kaetlyn's skating this year. Speed is a virtue, but in the past she looked frenetic and uncontrolled to me. Now, when she skates clean, the quality of her jumps and presentation is second to none. But Evgenia's consistency is her greatest weapon.

Canada's top three ladies are really excellent—such an enjoyable, competitive field. Their consistency, however :slink:

Personally, I would give a clean Kaetlyn the PCS edge if I were judging. It's tough for the judges because they want to judge fairly, but when skaters have these great performances that come out of nowhere, the judges also don't want to be the outlier that scores a skater much higher than the others. In the very talented GPF field, Kaetlyn received the third highest PCS in the LP and second in the SP. Given where she and Evgenia started the year, the margin between them is probably as close as it can be right now. More strong outings will help Kaetlyn close the gap further.
 
Last season I was pleasantly surprised that the judges put Alaine Chartrand's phenomenal SP in 2nd at the Rostelecom Cup. I feel optimistic that if Osmond, Chartrand and Daleman put two good programs together, the marks will be there for them.

I think that overall, consistency was shown by the Canadian women this season, consider the following;

Kaetlyn
Finlandia 1st
Skate Canada, 2nd
Cup of China, 2nd
GP Final, 4th

Total of 9 in total, divided by 4 comps = 2.25 in terms of placement, which is where Kaetlyn has been in the majority of her GP comps in the silver position

Gabby
Nebelhorn, 3rd
Skate America, 4th
Trophee de France, 4th (with questionable ice conditions and for a huge jumper that needs proper take off in order to complete, so unfortunate)

Total 11 divided by 3 = 3.66, or 4th, which unfortunately is the worst place to be in sport. I expect more from Gabby in future GP events

Alaine,
Yes, has struggled this season and has not skated to her full potential
Autumn Classic, 2nd
Skate Canada, 5th place
NHK, 10th place

Total 17 divided by 3 = 5.6, or 6th

Alaine has had challenges and has put herself out of contention after her SP, and now is going back to her Pina SP from last season. At the same time, Kaetlyn and Gabby have been consistent in finishes this season, and I expect Alaine to rebound for nationals and 4CC.

Maybe I just have that impression because they don't seem to have peaked at Worlds. Really though, I would like to see Canada earn three Olympic spots. I am fine with two spots for the US ladies.
 
I just read that Alaine is going back to last year's SP. I do love it and I hope it works out for her.

Do you think going back to old programs is generally successful? Just recently, I thought it was a smart move for Rika Hongo to go back to her Riverdance free skate, but it didn't help her at Japanese nationals.

Hmm, I am not sold that the Canadians are able to compete with the Americans but I am sensing I am wrong and that was premised on Gracie and Ashley being so awesome. Gracie has been looking a bit shabby lately.

Skater Boy... you are one year late on skating news ... Last year, your statement would be right. Canadian girls were showing promise but Americans were still outranking them. This year, two things have been happening.... 1) Canadian girls have been performing better and better.... 2) American girls have not been as good as in the previous seasons.

What else do you need to believe in Canadian girls ? A spot a GPF with 4 Russians + Satoko? Done by Kaetlyn... What else?

Gabby peaked at Worlds with a top 10 and a best ever finish at Worlds in Boston, and while still in a recovery year, Kaetlyn placed 3rd at nationals and did not qualify (2 spots only).

Gabby = 72.70 SP at TDF, could see her getting over 200, say 205, if clean free skate at Worlds. Kaetlyn even higher (if she can conquer her nerves, something that I've got the impression has been a problem in the past), 220 say with a 145 free skate, bang in line for a medal.

Gabrielle, her SP this season and that TDF SP performance are one of my highlights of the season so far and SP is my favourite one among all ladies. She showed so much of a progress, poised attitude with lots of attack and development towards both technical and presentation sides. For me, she is very impactful on ice despite her small statue. Wish her all the best, foremost - consistency and health.

As for Kaetlyn - since Worlds 2013 she captivated my attention by her latin SP performed so amazingly, in such mature and sophisticated way being only 17 yo. I'm really not an expert on jumps, edge take-offs, but she is one of the most enjoyable skaters for me to watch - I feel very 'comfortable' from aesthetical point of view looking at her performances, she has charisma, attack, speed, flow and a great performer quality on ice, there goes also maturity and sophistication. Both her and Anna Pogorilaya are one of my favourites currently - statuesque ladies with whole package.

Gabby just needs more unique programs next year to increase that scoring potential. She has a lovely dress for her LP but Rhapsody in Blue seems very generic and her PCS could only go so high. Her team needs to give her a unique program to maximize her points.

I would also like to see Skate Canada enter ladies into some senior Bs if they don't make the GPF just to give them more international experience. Each lady only gets one a year and I think they definitely would like more experience. Alaine only did Autumn Classic and that was home ice. Doing well would also help them skate later in competitions.

Yes, Gabrielle seems so much more mature, you can see it with her discussions with her coaches in the K and C afterwards. Does anyone know by the way if she's working on or planning a Triple Axel, could transform her prospects. PCS may always be difficult no matter what, but if she can up her technical content she could be a real surprise going forward (have noticed her program is very similar to Liza Ts World Championship year, what with the 3T-3T and 3S-2A in sequence).

Re Kaetlyn, yes she and Anna P are women amongst girls this season. This year's Worlds might be a little early for both, unless Evgenia has a disaster (unlikely), but with more competitions/expectations transformed by next years Olympics could easily see both in high 70's and 140's for SP and LP, enough to give even Evgenia food for thought.
 
Gabby and Alaine were both working on the 3A... Alaine tried to include it last year. Gabby, hasn't. I think Gabby focused a lot on developing her skating skills and honestly, a couple years ago, I didn't think much of her except for her big jumps... but now, she is showing a completely different style. Her skating is polished and full of transitions. I am happy to see that the judges have raised her PCS accordingly. They may not think of her as a lyrical skater but they are rewarding her for her skating components more than I expected and it could become even higher if she places again in the elite at worlds. With Kaetlyn, PCS are already there... all she needs is clean programs.

Please keep in mind that she is only in her 2nd season post having a metal plate in her leg... I have had one in my arm a year ago and I still feel pain and stiffness... no idea if she is 100% yet... and it could take some more time before she feels physically 100%.
 
Good points 4ever. And with the great team Kaetlyn has I am sure they have been telling her to take it easy this year and not overdue things so as to cause another injury. Cause a lot of her missteps this season have been just downgrading. So that would leads me to think that she has been told - if you are not in the perfect set up to do the combos - don't! Thus why she has done a 2A/2T instead of the 2A/3T a couple times - or only a 2S combo at the GPF!
This is not the year for her to suffer another injury. If she did I am sure that would end her skating future - especially 1 year out form the Olympics.
