2016-2017 State of Canadian Figure Skating

I actually think Gabby's Rhapsody in Blue is awesome and I normally intensely dislike Rhapsody in Blue... she really hits the highlights of the music in such beautiful ways I find myself super draw into the program.

I guess we have agree to disagree then :p

I would rather Gabby go back to a tango or something more dramatic. She has very striking features and I would rather something more expressive.

That reminds me, tomorrow Gabby turns 19! She is legal to buy alcohol where she lives now

Great comments on the Canadian ladies. I agree that Kaetlyn seems to have found more control in her skating. I think Gabby is also trying to head towards a greater level of control with the height of her jumps and power she has setting up a 2nd jump in a combo. Alaine's working on it too from what I've seen, particularly the 3Lz. I think we're going to see an amazing ladies event at Nationals this year as well.

Here are some comments from Tessa & Scott and Kaitlyn & Andrew before Nationals: http://ottawacitizen.com/sports/loc...-grateful-to-extend-decorated-skating-careers

If you check out the #CTNSC17 hashtag on Twitter you can get quotes from people who listened in on the teleconferences. From this I've learned that both ice dance teams made some changes to their programs. Shaping up to be a good battle next week. 🔥

as Snow White noticed.... it's both Gabby's and Joannie's birthday today !!!!

:hb:

That brings me back...for years Joannie's B-day was during the same time at nationals, and audiences every year sang 'Happy Birthday' to her, after her LP's. The icing was her many national crown wins.

Speaking of Joannie - one has to wonder how much faster she would have improved had she been pushed by a couple other strong CAN ladies at her time. I mean yes she had Cynthia right behind her but that was just at the end of her years. Early on she only had herself to complete against.

Looking back at the season, Kaetlyn Osmond should be proud of her accomplishments, namely the fact that she has reaffirmed that she is a World medallist caliber skater that many have long believed she was. She's got the goods and if she can score a 137 for a five-triple FS program as in the GP Final, she has to know that the World podium is within her grasp, if she can nail both performances.

I forgot to mention this before but Winterfest is happening this weekend at The Hershey Centre. I didn't see a thread in the synchro part of the forum so I'm just putting this here. Synchro teams from Michigan, Vancouver, Manitoba, Quebec, and Ontario are competing. Apparently this event is also hosting trials for the Junior Synchro Worlds that will be held in Mississauga later this year.

Skate Ontario is posting beautiful photos on Facebook. You can find the results here. The link to the results page will only work until the end of the season so if you want to please download any protocols/results etc.

Skate Canada will be live behind the scenes on Facebook during Nationals: https://www.instagram.com/p/BPNllUnjpWg/

Elladj filmed a really cool commercial for Jackson Ultima: https://www.instagram.com/p/BPQyVVdFwMi/

So exciting to see Kirsten and Michael ready. Really hope they do well at Nationals! Missed them this fall! Hope Kirsten is fully recovery d from her concussion.

Love the Elladj Blade commercial! I've always liked him, and this season I've really become a fan!

Ahhhh noooo, talking about Winterfest makes me sad! It's the best synchro competition in the country, and I've only competed in it twice, the last time was 2013. :( My team rarely goes for various reasons relating to how it's right after Christmas break, when practices are always sparsely attended. Meanwhile all these other teams manage to pull it off, so we clearly aren't trying hard enough. It also conflicts with the WOS Dover competition in Grimsby, they are always on the same weekend, which puts adult synchro skaters who are singles coaches in a bind.

I was planning on going to watch, but I wound up having to go to a funeral yesterday. :(

Winterfest has always been the qualifying competiton for world juniors. Nexxice and Les Supremes placed first and second overall and will represent Canada in two months back at the Hershey centre.

DO NOT READ THE ARTICLE ON THE WEBSITE!

They get ad revenue for it and that causes Rosie Dimanno to get more poorly researched and edited pieces. I have quoted it below if you want to read it with of the big mistakes.

The how-to of re-orienting a figure skating career: From Hackensack to Novogorsk.

That’s almost 4,700 miles.

Spinning the compass was deemed essential by reigning Canadian ice dance champions Kaitlyn Weaver and Andrew Poje following a season of regression and disappointment, further impinged by the return to competition of compatriots Tessa Virtue and Scott Moir, merely the ne plus ultra of their sport.

Not that the two-time and defending national titleholders will admit to being crowded by the 2004 Olympic gold medallists.

“Regardless of the comeback, we knew that we needed a new spark to our skating,” says Weaver, choosing her words carefully. “They only fueled the fire. Their comeback, it’s neither here nor there, it doesn’t involve us. But I would be lying if I said I haven’t worked harder because of it.”

Whether they’re competitively abreast with their rivals — friendly rivals — will be revealed at the Canadian figure skating championships in Ottawa next weekend. Virtue and Scott will be looking to reclaim the laurels they’ve won six times.

With that challenge doubtless in mind, off to New Jersey Weaver and Poje went last summer, re-locating from their Detroit training base, with extended camps at the multi-sport national training academy in Novogorsk, under new coach Nikolai Morozov. “It’s kind of like the Mississauga of Moscow,” explains Weaver of the elite suburban facility.

-shortened-

“We go to dance class all the time, whether it be a style that we’re doing on the ice currently or something way out there, like house or reggae,” says Poje.

Weaver: “Stepping into the studios there is so energizing. It’s an immersion technique. We might be totally out of our comfort zone, which most likely we are. But we’re growing our knowledge base, we’re becoming more of a rounded team. And it’s so inspiring to be around people who are striving to make it every day. That’s the great thing about New York. People want to make something of themselves, so the level of commitment and intent is incredible.”

Ice dancing doesn’t stand still. It has evolved. Virtue and Moir have certainly pushed that envelope. These nationals will mark the first time the two couples have gone head-to-head-to-head-to-head.

“I’m not really concerned about how our results will be against them,” Weaver claims. “We’re still Kaitlyn and Andrew. People appreciate what we do, thankfully . . .

“They have no bearing on that and will not be able to take that away from us. That’s been an incredible gift that we’ve been given – something special, something memorable and a very beautiful career that we’ve shared together.”

Somehow, that sounds almost like an epitaph.

The ending sounds really condescending.
