That looks fantastic! It would be super cool to see her pull it off at Nationals. I don't even care if she under-rotates and/or splats on everything else, that's a beautiful looking 3A.

I am a little scared that it might derail the entire program (Alaine Chartrand for instance) but I feel like all this showing off by Tom Z is really meant to be a huge confidence boost to Mirai as well. I think regardless of the results, I just hope that Mirai feels like she's conquered some of her personal demons. I am excited to see what happens as it seems like US Nationals are the most unpredictable.

From the video, it is not just a 3A, but a well executed one. It also looks very secure and very repeatable. It also shows it is never too late to learn a new jump for ladies.

It's all about strategy. IMO, If Mirai is in 4th after the SP. She should absolutely go for it. However, if she's in medal contention before the LP, I think she can still win without it if she performs up to her capabilities and leaves the blank face behind. It will be VERY interesting...

It's one thing to land a 3a in isolation while practicing, and quite another to land it within a program, especially when that jump has never been attempted in a competition program, never mind at a MAJOR competition like Nationals.

Knowing how Mirai "nerves up" at competitions, I don't see her going into a 3a attempt with the ease and assurance she showed on that clip.

That's underrotated, watch closely, her toepick hits the ice and she finsishes the rotataion on it before flattinging her blade on the ice. I don't believe the judges would call this clean.

I don't think that would get a call. Watch it again but don't look.. With your eyes closed you can hear that she lands on her toe but there is no "Ca-Chunk" sound that you hear from an under rotation. I think she may be OK if she were to do that jump in competition.

But Mirai uderrotates differently, she generally avoids the chuncky sound by landing on her toepick and finishing the rotation before gliding her blade down. She does this sometimes and gets called, it is clearly happening here. I love Mirai but once you watch what she does closely you will see what is really going on.

This is why judges have slow motion and close ups because I would have called that clean. I'll say it again. Mirai has no problem getting height into her jumps, it's the speed of her rotation that has always held her back. When you watch a skater like Tara, she never had Big jumps but she rotated like a top. So very fast right off the ice.

I downloaded it and watched it in slow-mo. It's only about 45 degree under. It would be called clean.

As long as she doesn't finish 1/4< on the ice, its fine ; unless its a harsh panel which is rare at US nationals. In the insta video she doesn't reach down at the 1/4 mark so its considered clean. However, under spotlight is a different story.
