Patrick Chan

so... i have just watched back to back, flawless Patrick at 4CC 2016 and the journey Nationals 2017 (flawless minus one quad)

Here is my question : what do you prefer in terms of choreography?

I am struggling because I get more emotional watching the journey because the music is introspective and calls in melancholy etc...
but then, the Chopin... omg... the jumps and spins work so well with the timing of the music... (the salchow at the end... the spin position change when the slow e minor prelude comes in) etc... I do love the footwork in journey but the one in the chopin is more linked with the music IMHO...

So is Patrick still working on the choreography and planning to peak at worlds?
Is it because the Chopin was an older program (2 seasons already) and that things got refined?
Is it due to the fact that having an abstract program like the Chopin may not draw you in as much as one with a "story line" like the journey but then, being abstract, the choreography comes directly from the music rather than coming from the emotion transcended by the music?

In light of that : I think Patrick will use the Journey for the Olympics and fine tune it until then... What do you think about that?

Just enjoy them, 4everchan. However, if you want to dwell on the delicious dilemma............ let me watch them a few times and maybe I'd get around to pondering your question. :)

for me, both performances mentioned are masterful each one on its own, but personally I prefer Chopin in terms of choreography and expression. The music cuts used for it were put together exquisitely in my opinion and choreography perfectly matched music's highs and lows, this combination in effect allowed Patrick to show both dramatic and lyrical sides of music and his expression through his skating at the same time. And I felt that there was that amazing balance between classic, melancholic music, that nostalgic feel created and modernity, musicality of the choreography, elevated to the max by Patrick's softness in skating, yet so bold and prominent in expression of music and its emotions.

For me, Elegies SP and Chopin FS are iconic masterpieces I'm getting back to a lot, something inside me just breaks every time during Elegie when he's going into final spin, I can't help it...

Well said. Elegie was the first program I had ever seen of Patrick's that led me to become his fan. Apparently it is also a favorite among Japanese fans, according to this fan poll taken just yesterday:

I love Chopin and think it was a great program, but when I watched Chopin and then A Journey together, there seemed to be a difference between the two programs in the overall flow and smoothness of execution. Maybe training with ice dancers has an effect, but something about the new LP is super-smooth, as if Patrick were flying from one element to another seamlessly.

Speaking of A Journey, here's a lovely piece of jewelry that was inspired by Patrick's costume:

I think they got the colors just right! :)

Thank you, Calica! I'm glad that Patrick is seeing psychologist Scott Goldman (previously I had looked up University of Michigan sports psychologists and he's the director of the Performance Psychology Center there, so I guessed that Patrick had seen him) and that he's reading a book on the topic of flow (amazing that he never knew about this before)!

What's interesting to me is that Oleg thinks Patrick can learn another quad, but Patrick doesn't think he needs to (even though he had hinted about a quad flip a couple of months ago)... Hmm, here we go again. But I agree with Patrick's attitude of staying healthy. Four Continents will be exciting!

Okay, time for me to go blogging again!

sometimes i wish i spoke english so i could express my feelings in a more eloquent manner, like you have done here ;)

I agree with Elegie... it just gets to me.... The sounds made by the blades gel with the music and makes it even more poignant.

I was never a fan of the music of the Journey, though, I prefer that it was composed for Patrick and that it means a lot to him and that it is new and unique to other crossover alternatives. But i do like some of the details of the choreography... it is less subtle than the Chopin or Rachmaninoff... but very poetic IMHO..

Here are the moments I find effective but are perhaps not as subtle as what we are used from Patrick

back side glide then, turn...

arms synched with the piano highlights, pretty much from there on until the 3A entrance

small steps

the entire step sequence is truly an absolutely gorgeous section

And here is my 4CC preview:

Where the Blackbird Flies: Stop 6 – Korea

See my comments about Rosie DiManno's snarky article about Patrick. I think he should just stop letting her interview him!

Also, the fan who created the cute mini-SP costume also created a mini-LP costume replica!

I will be gathering everything I can about Patrick and 4CC this week, of course. Looking forward to it!

:o:, thanks a lot, I'm very flattered by Your remark, but as English is not my native language, I do wish often that I'd express my thoughts better, but with skaters like Patrick it's quite easy for me to write as I love the most to write about art in various forms, and I consider his skating as such.

Agree on remarks about 'Journey' - it is far more abstract, impressionist-like and poetic, as You said. There is still that lyrical feel, transcendent, airy impression around his skating and interpretation, but somehow I feel it's less nostalgic/melancholic and delicate than his usual work. Moreover - both his programs this year seem to me a lot more 'bold', 'statement-like' than his previous ones, but it's a good think in my opinion as it's showing his versatility, an ability to amp the volume/emotional level just on point to the music and choreography.

I hope Oleg convinces him to add another quadruple.
It is fantastic that he feels happy and motivated until now but I am convinced that he as athlete has other goals and I think that even if he does not care about the medals, he can be discouraged by watching the rest progresses more.

Planned Program Content

No 4S in SP :( In FS, he want do 3A + 3T ; is possible?
