Sadly, french TV (with our "favourite" three crazy commentators) will only broadcast the ice dance free program (because of papadakis-cizeron, I guess) and the gala. I hope Morgan/Cipres and Laurine will do well, if only because perhaps then there will be a better figure skating coverage on french TV next year... at least I hope... We used to be SO passionate about figure skating, what happened ?


ETA : NooOOOOO Eurosport is not covering the mens short program live !!!! Only pre-recorded !!!
That means I'll have to make do with an awful low-def stream :(. I'm sad :(. The sparkles don't look the same in low definition. Purple pants even less

Mmm, when I think of him, I tend not to draw a stark line between "real" (internal) vs outside-facing so much. Of course he has a filter, but I believe he is able to be so consistent in tone and message because the core tenets of his "inside space-kitten world" and "outside self that we see" are generally in sync. He has mentioned that conversations with the media (maybe some more so than others, such as Shuzo-san, and certain times more so than others, such as right after competitions) serve as external stimulation to help comb through his thoughts / his own processing of events.

Perhaps because he's done this for so long, he seems to have come to use those opportunities to establish what he himself thinks, perhaps unlike your usual athlete, who'd be busy trying to come up with something appropriate for the occasion. In this way, Yuzu's many different "selves" seem quite in sync with each other. Another example I can think of is during press conferences. I don't think he immediately puts on an "outside face" so to speak after he competes. Press conferences, maybe due to the mix of adrenaline rush and HisGreatEnemy!English, is often where he is the slowest (but still machine gun talk). He hums and haws quite a bit, occasionally going back to correct himself. His infamous 5-minute-long response to "How many quads would it take to win" from NHK 2015 was especially slow. He was deliberating words, but everything came out extremely clear. And based on how he's behaved all throughout these years, that's his true belief and what he practices.

So, while he has a more private side we sure don't get to see, I think that side has the same core beliefs as the "outside face" ----> hence consistency.

I don't drink but every time i listen to this song i think of World's lol because many of you will need tremendous amounts of alcohol to survive next week! (And because it is a finnish song haha)

Inside space kitten world :laugh2: I don't feel like he puts an outside face either, so my question really is that: does he just have a filter or a completely different "mediagenic" self? He always seems so honest and transparent... This world is so rough and disappointing at times that i think that he can't be that good, honest and calm :laugh: I of course mean no disrespect for him since i think i've made very clear that i love this alien kitty but is just something that makes me wonder...

Thank you so much for translating this... Not sure I agree with the idea that Yuzuru's considered to excel in performing to the camera no matter what sort of setting he is in. Not sure it was all an act...

I don't think he's proposing that it's an act. The way I read it, it only establishes that he's consistent between full-coverage documentary mode and what you usually see of him on TV. The author doesn't say anything about what he's like in private. But I'll try harder to get the nuances right with my translations! :scratch3:

I don't mean he doesn't have a flicker of a doubt or is calm all the time. But it's just the same with anyone, everyone wavers in opinions from time to time (depending on how I wake up that day, I either think my boss hates me or loves me :P) and it's necessary because you want to be flexible too. If he's completely rigid then he'd just be stubborn and impractical. Instead he keeps his eyes wide open as to what other people are doing (training methods, jumping technique, etc) and is always ready to correct himself. That's how he could even be that insightful while remaining quite steadfast in his core beliefs. Just as he is quite steadfast in his belief for his 3A's when it matters. :laugh:

I don't think he's all an act because wouldn't that be extremely tiring, emotionally and mentally? Add to that the pressure of being Japan's number one, world record holder and olympic champion, he would break under all that.

Yeah, but he's either truthful and honest at all times on TV - and so this documentary was a disappointment then just in its failing to give a more intimate picture of him, just because they failed to ask something he hadn't heard or thought about already. Or Yuzu's adept at creating an image for TV in any place and any time. :)

ETA: have to edit my post after I've read your earlier post - and I agree, they sorta underestimate the boy's intelligence and his eloquence, in general. His general talent in coming up with comments and answers which are thoughtful, wise and profound - and truthful. He doesn't lose a beat because he's well used to being a centre of attention now...

Well, it is normal to have different sides of yourself, I think. :biggrin: I do not exactly act the same in front of my friends, my parents, or my colleague either. Does not mean I am faking myself, just meant that I like to show different sides that I have to different people (do I make sense?). I am sure there is a side of him he does not show in front of the public/camera, but that does not mean the side he showed in the media is not him (I hope I make sense lol).

Anyway, though he is not as blunt as athletes from other sports (think boxing, football, etc), I think he is pretty blunt himself. If he is annoyed at something he said it out loud and he showed that athlete's confidence (that could be mistakenly understood as arrogance by some) time after time (like when he said : I'm sorry to say this, but I still believe that I will win If I am clean, something like that, after 4cc?). :biggrin:

Hence my question, is it really a different self or just a filter? How much of that side is the "real" Yuzuru, or rather, how much of what we see is "Yuzuru Hanyu" and not just "Hanyu senshu" (i think i made even less sense but eeeh...)
Not that it matters, i still love him a lot haha, i'm just curious

It still hasn't quite sunken in that I leave Saturday. I leave Saturday for my first trip to Europe ever. What. The. F.

I still need to go to the Disney store for a Pooh Plush. I have to join the Pooh Rain. But I'm trying to figure out when I'll have the time because none of them are close.

Just today on my way to work i was telling my mom how in a week i would be already "AAAAAH NEW PICTURESSSSSS YESSS" and i'll hoard them like a dragon
