I'm glad I wandered over here.:) The negative comments about Sasha in the men's FS thread were starting to make me wonder whether I'd watched the right competition, lol! Anyway, his long program has been on my radar all season (I especially love his jazz step sequence), and I was very proud for him that he was finally able to give his best performance of it at this important competition, including landing the quad in international competition for the first time (please correct me if I'm wrong on that). I completely agree w Tatjana Flade's assessment that the quality of his elements and skating were superior (far so, imo) to Samarin's and deserved a podium placement. Though I was awwed by Vincent's performance, Sasha's was the standout for me out of all the men. I hope he continues to improve (while staying true to his own charming style) and gets higher placements and alot more recognition next season.

There are some regular posters in event threads who love to bash him. I don't even need to read the FS thread to know which users wrote negative comments about him because it's almost always the same old people. I wouldn't say Sasha is very popular but his performances were well-received by the audience in Taipei.
 
Btw, Sasha wasn't invited to the exhibition. Among the men, only the men's medalists and Asian male skaters were. As such, I will not be watching the EX. I will go sightseeing instead.
 
A rather miserable end to a trip that started well. But I can't claim that I'm surprised, this was one of the scenarios I did foresee before I booked my tickets- no medal and no EX. Still I booked my plane tickets and a hotel for 6 days. I have no regrets because his skating is wonderful live. The difference with Sasha is that gives the impression that he floats across the ice, nothing is laboured or forced. Even the jumps, one continuous motion from entry to the point when he finally lowers his free leg after exiting the jump. And he holds a running edge and that free leg position longer than anyone else in the competition. He does not jump high but he has good distance on his jumps. It was beautiful to watch.
 
The quad looks good. Looks natural to him, not laboured or hesitant. It is much more fluid on the right side of the rink than how it looked on video when they placed it on the left side during the first half of the season. Lutz is also more fluid on the right side, although he landed two on the left side at this event.

Interesting...I hadn't been following Sasha w any emotional investment. I just noticed him this season as an up and coming young skater w a skating style that appeals to me -- he reminded me a little of a young Petrenko in the 1988 Olympics (when I first started watching skating - now I'm really dating myself, lol). So the "bashing" surprised me. I mean, objectively, what is there to bash, considering his good jumping technique, skating skills, posture, and musicality...not to mention that he's only 17 for heavens sake?? Ah...now I realize that some of this bashing might be spin by fans of skaters who would be his direct competitors in the next quad. :laugh:

I'm home. Flight arrived 20 mins early but looong commute by train and then by bus from airport to my home.
 
I weighed myself this morning and I've lost 2kg from all that walking in Taipei. Had I not had that daily cup of milk tea/bubble tea, I'd have probably lost more. So something really good did come out of this trip!

Well, we've always got Sasha's beautiful skating from this event to console us for other disappointments - he acquited himself with credit, and if he continues to do so, there will come a point when he will not be denied, whatever is working against him. I believe this with absolute conviction. The road in the meantime, though, is full of unnecessary bumps and frustrations. But I am looking forward to a golden future - as golden as his SP shirt.:)

I don't have any particular song on my mind right now. But Sasha can do angst/anger/drama/sadness well. That is the avenue he needs to pursue.
 
One of the girls at Junior Worlds skated to TSFH. As I watched her skate, I couldn't help but think, LRK would so approve of this music choice. lol
