To all those people who want Mao to go: I miss Mao too, but I'm pretty sure that she's still exhausted and still recovering from her injury. Rather than seeing her go to Worlds looking tired and possibly finishing with a low result, I'd want her to rest completely and prepare for next season. Worlds is too big of a risk for her.
As for the alternate, I think Kaori is the one who should be sent. But I feel bad for Rika and Kanako, and I'm not sure if an alternate can be prepared so suddenly in the first place.

Congratulation to Kanako! And just adding a note to clarify: although it is not reported in the above news link, Kanako explained in her interview (as shown in video clips posted on twitter) that she'll make a decision by the end of this season, as she is officially still the sub to WC (as 1st sub/alternate as shown in the entry list, and 2nd sub is Rika).

There is still time to send someone else. The alternates should have been training. But they need to make a decision fast.

I know Mao has a lot of fans but it would be ridiculous to send her. She is not the first or second sub and this year has been a unmitigated fiasco. Every time we hoped things would go better and they didn't. Injury, technique, mentla issues whatever she needs some time off. Wishing her the best but sending her to worlds I don't think we be good for anyone including mao.

2016-17 State of Japanese Ladies Skating: cloudy with high chances of thunderstorm. Or so the Japanese media is calling it. As I stated in my post above, JSF has been pressuring Satoko to compete until last minute; she was in Worlds and WTT commercials everywhere. Must be the first time in a while when a skater says "no, I will prioritize my health over your convenience."
I sincerely hope this will stop the constant nitpicking and bullying she gets from the federation, from the media, from forum members and so on. Contrary to people's claims, she tried her best to fix her jump technique and ended up overdoing it. Her body simply couldn't take it. Her strongest wish was to skate her best programs at Worlds and help the team get 3 spots for the Olympics. I am sure she is very frustrated and disappointed she won't be able to do that. But she's a little fighter and I hope she will come back fearless and determined.
Channeling positive thoughts to Rika and Wakaba. Satoko was texting Rika at 4CC to encourage her and I'm sure she'll do the same at Worlds. I still trust Wakaba to turn things around like she did at Nationals, where the pressure for her to qualify for Worlds was big. I'm not worried for Mai, I'm sure she will take advantage of her momentum. Go Team Japan!

Japanese federation is vengeful. I think her olympic spot is hanging by a thread.
i don't think so. satoko is clearly still japan's no.1, jsf is not that stupid.
It's just what JSF/japanese media do. it won't change, it will never change, and I don't see how it's specific to satoko, I think it's the same for all japanese skaters.
If Wakaba loses it, she can also say good bye to her own spot. They have no problem keeping miki down. They will be done with her if she doesn't deliver this time.
Mai needs to be in the top 5 to keep herself in the running for an Olympic spot next year.

I'm talking about this particular situation, where JSF was flat out lying about her being ok and being able to compete at all of the competitions she was assigned to.

It's tough for JSF. Previously, Mao was the only one keeping the Japanese flag flying for ladies. Satoko is now the flag bearer and she has consistently delivered - she rarely misses the podium, she works and fight harder than anyone despite being naturally less talented. The other Japanese ladies while talented and good do not have her competitive nerves. JSF knows that Satoko is the only one who can realistically break a Russian podium sweep or place high enough to ensure 3 spots for Japan in the Pyeongchang olympics. I think that Satoko being unavailable is something they were not prepared to accept.
I do believe Satoko gets it worse than the other Japanese skaters. And it's not just JSF or the media; look at this forum--every time Satoko skates, you get everything from self-proclaimed experts measuring how much she cheats her jumps to the nth degree, to others making slo-mo videos to showcase her flaws.
I disagree. I used to get annoyed when bots made slo-mo videos showing Mao UR all her jumps. I do feel JSF will not do Satoko any favor in the future based on her refusal to participate this year. I think if there are 3 spots for Olympics, and if
1. Mai
2. Kaori
3. Satoko
4/5. Mao/Marin whichever order
Satoko will be staying home for one of Mao/Marin. If there are 2 spots, and if Satoko doesn't come in 1st, and Marin is 3rd or Mao is 3rd, she's also staying home. This is why it is very important she has to win Nationals next year to go. When Miki came back, Japan had 3 spots for Sochi. Miki was a WC in that quad, and they said the only way she could go to the Olympics was to win Nationals.

I have read recently the article that Mao will be sent to Korea only in case she wins Nationals next year.

Why would JSF blame Satoko if they will lose 3 spots for ladies? If Satoko forces herself to go to WC with a bad condition, she might mess up and they will still lose 3 spots anyway. And they will turn the blame on her.
