Nathan Chen

6 quads??? I'm not really liking how Raf keeps changing his LP layout. I'm kinda worried and not expecting a clean free from him now.

Gotta give it to Nathan and his coach. They sure know how to get that buzz going. Much like his layout change at 4CC; intimidate the competitors with your quad mastery! Even though I'm rooting for others a bit more, if he lands all those 6 damn quads, I can't even begrudge him winning. Respect!

Dang, it's not that he's hinting at more quads... he's UPGRADING them.

2 Lutz and 2 Flips, rather than repeating the "easier" 4T.

Now, the question... is it for real, or is it psy-ops on the competition?

Either way, it is brilliant. I can't wait to see the men's competition.

I knew a second 4Lz was coming because his second 4T had fewer transitions than the 4T combo. But six quads? I disnt see that coming at all. I said this at the very beginning of the season: holding Nathan Chen back is like trying to stop a freight train with your bare hands. If he has he 4Lo, next season he probably will try for a seven quad program.

Oh, he definitely will. I'm starting to think Nathan's hunger won't allow him to let Shoma/Yuzuru/Javi/Boyang, or anyone that may add a different quad to their program next season, reach him in BV. The issue may be, though... can one really do a 7-quad program without losing something in the process?

Anyways, if he were to have the stamina for 7-quad programs, I might start wondering if he's secretly a robot.

He didn't have the stamina for his four quad program at the beginning of the season. Now he he's got enough for six. With training I can't see why he wouldn't have enough stamina for 7 quads by the Olympics.

I'm a bit surprised he chose to repeat 4lz and 4f instead of 4t and another quad. 6 quads with 1 axel is easier for him than 5 quads and 2 axels. But I think his lp layout will depend on his sp placement and scores. If he is clean in the sp, he most likely will take a bit more risk in the lp. If he makes mistakes in the sp, heat take less risk in the lp, so he can have a better performance in the lp. That's what happened in tdf, nhk, gpf, national and 4cc. He did a safer layout if he made mistakes in the sp and did a more risky layout if he was clean in the sp.

7 quads with 5 types of quads doesn't have much higher bv than 6 quads with 5 types of quads. I'm not sure he will actually do 7 quads in the Olympic season even if he does 4lo.

Nathan's always switched up his long program layouts though - this is really nothing new for him. Sometimes he did it himself without Raf's approval. I'm just happy to hear the boot issues don't seem to be affecting him.

Nathan's been having some decent practices at Worlds. :) Some step-outs and the occasional fall but overall, looking good. This is similar to how his practices at 4 Continents went (although I think his 4cc practices weren't super strong - more falls) Hopefully he can continue it throughout the week!

This explains everything. I wonder about boot issues like this when Mirai's split again at worlds. She said she was still training her 3A, which meant a lot more pounding on her boots. Boot stiffness is meant for skaters at a certain level who are performing at a specific level. But what about people that exceed the highest level. Nathan is doing more quads than anyone in the world. Naturally his boots would break down faster. But custom made boots should increase material strength to ensure they can withstand the constant pressure so many high level jumps would put on the boots.

Proud of Nathan! It's not what he wanted - but he'll learn from it. Wondering how that 6 quad free skate will go.... (You know he's going to try it.)

To be honest, I don't like the comments he made during the espn interview recently. I feel his remarks jinxed his performance at worlds. Oh well, hope he will learn to watch his mouth from now on.

What did he say? It's his first worlds, I honestly didn't expect clean performances from him. It's kinda normal to feel a bit nervous at your first major championship event like GPF, WC and Olympics. He fell in the SP at GPF too, the first major ISU championship competition he competed in. I think he will bounce back in the FS. The next time he competes in GPF and WC, he would feel more comfortable.
