2016-2017 State of Canadian Figure Skating

I also found the CBC TV pairs coverage confusing. They showed parts of the last two flights, which was OK, but they also showed the warmups, which was very confusing. They showed the warmup for group 3, then warmup group for group 4, then started with skaters from group 3. It was as if they were trying to convince us that the Canadians were in the last flight. They also didn't breathe a word about Zabiako and Enbert, the fact that they skated between the two Canadian pairs, and the fact that their result (behind the Canadians, though they'd been ahead in the short) made the difference between 3 spots for worlds/Olympics and 2. Way to suck the excitement out of the competition.

My husband watched the TV coverage with me (he wanted to see Patrick) and he agreed that Sui/Han were the best. As he put it, "I don't know anything about figure skating, but I know what I like, and they were really great."

Today no one rains on our Canadian parade.

All season we've been graced with comments seeking to diminish these ladies. Most of us who've spoken up have gotten infractions for defending our ladies. Osmond4Gold even got banned.

Well, these women let their skating do the talking. No home ice advantage. No strange falls. No disastrous errors. Just skating and doing their best.

Well done girls!

Silver and Bronze, to Canadian women on the podium with essentially clean skates. HOW COOL IS THAT!:cheer:

I'd so hoped that Kaetlyn and Gabby would bring their down to the wire competitiveness, that they've showed at nationals since 2014, to Worlds.

So, kudos to competitiveness in Canadian women's events, and the end for ever of the old and unlamented 'Wait Your Turn' ranking in Canadian women's skating that took hold in days gone by and strangled development.
 
I'm not able to watch videos right now, but I did look at the results, and I was so ECSTATIC that Kaetlyn and Gabby were on the podium that I squealed with joy! SQUEEEEEEEEEEEE!!! :hb: :points: :hap36: :hap85: :party: :hap93: :gclap: :yay: :clap: :bow:

It's also because there is a dedicated gushing and celebrating thread on these Canadian Ladies and their medals. :yay:
 
Greetings from rural Nova Scotia; I had to pull over roadside to send this message. I am in a parking lot at a coffee shop and screeching to the heavens, at these results. How many war wounds do we collectively have after such constant criticisms that these results for our women would never happen. We always knew they had it in them and as I have said on this Forum, many times, never underestimate a Canadian!

Kudos Kaetlyn and Gabby, we are so, so proud of your resilience, incredible strength, athleticism and your mental toughness. Beyond this, you are both beautiful inside and out, and ambassadors for anyone thinking of the sport! You are bonafide Stars and have earned and deserve this moment...enjoy!!!

I have been silent until now. I arrived just in time for work while watching the event. I was literally getting dressed to go out as the ceremony happened. It has been a thrilling day for Canada with new pb for our dancers and finally, for what we knew could happen for a few years now, hit the world. Canadian skaters are powerful, fast, have great skating skills and performance flair. Also, they can deliver. We know they could do so after the bloodbaths we have seen at nationals. We have seen them pushing each other. We have seen them fighting. We have seen them improving. But we always knew. Our two girls on the podium. Our two girls above 140 in the lp. Our two girls about 210 in total. Personnal bests. Canadian records. These scores probably list very high on the all time pb lists. I'm not eloquent tonight as I'm on my phone, and typing while i digest a very junky meal. When the final flight started i thought they would do well. They did much better than well. I am ecstatic. Will write later. Let us rejoice.
 
In the 'what's with that?' category, Skate Canada still hasn't managed to post a new release for the day with the Ladies and Short Dance results.....:scratch2:

Uhm, know we were all riveted and awed today...but one hopes that options for the bones of a release were roughed up in advance....

It's a super important day, and CBC which has the broadcast rights covered it well, even if the Canadian women's hockey team getting shut out in their first game at Worlds is now the top sports story on the CBC sports main page.

But the Canadian Press wire story is usually taken from the SC news release, not the CBC, and features in news papers across Canada rely on that wire story for their content.

It looks like the CP wire was on the story of a big day for Canadian skating, with an anticipatory story including historical stats and trend analysis of Canadians at Worlds: here's this morning's CP story as it ran in the National Post [with a photo from 2014...]
But with no news release from SC, we don't seem to see a wire story from CP. In fact, a look at their main page has an NHL Flames get a playoff spot running as the top sports headline of the day. :dev2:

Uhm, Debra Armstrong, CEO of Skate Canada...you need to look at the operational flexibility and responsiveness of your communications team....:drama:

And really think hard about whether the Vancouver venue for the 2018 nationals will be large enough... and if not, how will Skate Canada manage reaction...?

^^ and considering figure skating is extremely popular in vancouver with 2010 and other events.... it will be impossible to get tickets... i mean even davis cup there was sold out in no time.. it's a very small venue.... i don't know the seats difference depending on set ups for different sports but ottawa seemed bigger when i went there for nationals...
 
TGee they probably intend to do a release tomorrow after ice dance and men have finished. They're expecting a big story with Tessa & Scott who are even bigger than Kaetlyn and Gabby in the hierarchy due to the Olympic gold and silvers. They'll also mention Chan, who's also higher than these girls. I know we're excited, but the headlines need to be about V/M to catch people's attention.

They should've gone to Vancouver in 2017 and Ottawa in 2018! I know, it's the 150th anniversary and blah blah. Wikipedia tells me TD Place Arena has 10000 seats.
 
people have been talking about the team event... i thought i would bring my thoughts here..

usually,

the order is pairs, men, dance, ladies.... that's been the tradition for a long time...

it was very convenient for canada in sochi because our two pair teams were top5-6 and equivalent back then... and our two men as well... we only had kaetlyn (gabby was very young) for ladies who could compete with the elite (and even then she was undermarked) and for dance, it was clear that it was virtue and moir...

this time around :

i still think that no matter what, canada should save their pairs... we have 3 teams and with this format, it would probably be best that 2 teams split the event...

depending on how things go next year : if for instance team number 2 has a very strong SP, i would send them there..... I believe that Meagan and Eric usually have way more potential in the LPs because of their strength in SBS and the quad throw (when landed) so that's how i would split things... of course, granted that the SP team has solid SBS.

men : normally, I wouldn't recommend it but if it's like this year : Patrick would need to skate it all... none of our other guys have PCS potential (kevin lost his positioning being out two seasons and struggling to get back 100%)... but of course, if things change slightly, i would recommend Patrick for the SP to fight with the top guns... after the first round, Japan and China most likely would be out, and our 2nd boy could do like kevin did in sochi and compete against the others... We could assume that USA with Nathan Chen would be 1st anyways...

I'd leave tessa and scott do it all... if they are healthy... but would the french even make the second round???? it will be between usa and canada here... so if weapo for instance were splitting it, it would be alright..

ladies : easy said now : kaetlyn does SP, Gabby does LP...


so in general, I think Canada is in a good position.. but a lot can happen in a year...

makes sense... because it didn't feel twice bigger at all.. but just relatively bigger... 10K is a good number.... we have to think about juniors too ;) empty seat is tough for them lol... you will see ACI is tiny but it's fun too because you are see them so well
