Mikhail Kolyada

I know not everyone is checking the The Edge, so here's new GS article on Mika: http://www.goldenskate.com/2017/06/mikhail-kolyada-3/ :hap10:
And discussion's here: http://www.goldenskate.com/forum/sh...-for-Russia%92s-Kolyada&p=1744401#post1744401

Personally, I'm a little astonished they want him to do 3 different Challengers. Two would be plenty enough considering he does have two GP assigments, and who knows, maybe GPF? I'm afraid he might have not enough rest before Olympics, since it's a sure thing he will go to Europeans too.

Wow, he's going to be super busy. But this might actually help get the jitters of competition out and it's plenty of chances to test the 4Lz. The advantage is that all his 3 Challengers are in Europe so they shouldn't be as tiring, expect for Tallinn after COC, but that would depend on whether he'd make the GPF and had to travel to Japan after.

I'm not a big "fan" of interviews in general, but this was a nice read. Really enjoy seeing this guy on the ice, hope he's going to have a terrific season!

I think they decided from how the past season went that doing less events not working and returned to a 'busy bee' plan similar to his 2015-16 season. I am more worried about their Napoleonic plans of upping the tech. I think it is a bit too ambitious. If they upgrade to a 2 quad SP and put another 4T in the LP leaving out untested 4S, it would be a much more realistic plan which still would easily get him over 100 points in the SP and close to 200 in the LP provided all other elements work and 4lz is consistent. Add the new 4S into equation and it could be a repeat of last season with no clean LPs. Just IMHO

I'm not worried about quads, it's just plans... I'm sure it wil be verified quite soon. If not by test skates, then by the Challengers. I agree there is no need to include 4S for now. He should focus on 4Lz and clean programs. And if it works out, then upping tech in a program will make sense.

But it is important to settle on some layout at the start of the season and work on it and not chopping it around all the time like they did the last season. I personally hope that this interview in part is just a bit of PR probably pushed by the RusFed who I am sure is determined to 'promote' Russia's number one like never before, considering it is the Olympic season and that the Russians take the team event very seriously.

Oh, I hope it isn't just PR, because it probably won't work out at all and there will be too much critcs... Stable layout is important sure. But Sometimes, a change goes well, like for Yuzuru in 2015-16 season, when he changed it after Skate Canada, and then won NHK and GPF with PBs. I think the key is to not change it every competition. And it's better to make it more difficult later, than start with too difficult one. You're right though about Russians taking Olmpics very seriously, and that includes Team Event, when Mika will have key role for sure (of course, that's if he'll go to Olympics). I wonder if there is possibility that Mika won't go to Olympics, while Russia have two spots? We all know sometimes Russian Nationals are sometimes a little bit "fixed". Though I guess Russian Fed never hid that they do selection not only based on Russian Championships, so they don't even have to fix results. Though it's better if the favourites do well...

No I didn't mean it was only PR but in part was influenced by either an 'advice' from the Fed or in another scenario is done to keep the Fed happy - as we know all they care about is quads, quads & quads. To keep them happy and win some peace needed for a calm & productive preparation for the season ahead could be good tactics. Well, I don't even want to think of Mika NOT being on the Olympic team and IMHO barring injuries it is highly unlikely even if other guys have a strong season. But as you noticed even here on the GS some people never miss a chance to say something negative every time Mika's name mentioned. I imagine he has any amount of haters in Russia too. But unless the Rus Fed feels suicidal one day Mika as of this moment in time has the strongest bid for that Olympic 'ticket'. Still I wish he would be more evasive about his Olympic plans putting in a 'if I am selected' now and then... - it is better not to tempt the fate IMHO...

Yup. So many things can happen... :drama:

Yeah, his plans with 4 Quads seems a bit too ambitios, but can we remember what he said before 2015-16 start? He was 20, never had outstanding results, never tried a Quad in competitions, had to skip the previous season because of a bad injury, and when he was asked about his plans for the new season, he said that he wants to be in the top-3 in Russia and to take part in Europeans. It was sound too ambitios, but at the end of the day he achived it and even more. That is good, if he feels himself strong and confident enough "to strive, to seek, to find, and not to yield" (c). Wish him best luck and to achive all his goals!

A short article with a quote from Valentina - apparently Lambiel choreographed the step sequence, Olga did the rest of the programs.

http://rsport.ru/figure_skating/20170724/1123304150.html

It is a bit disappointing I thought Lambiel did one program and Olga - another... but we have to wait and see ... Again, not even a hint on music choices! So many skaters have already announced their programs - but not Mika!

Another little bit of news (so welcome in the off-season) that once a week on Thursdays Mika has a sparring partner - Dmitri Aliev and seems both are enjoying the experience (article ''Academy of Freedom'' )

Misha is rather secretive, isn't he? It always amused me that he is so often described as "open" - the guy never gives away any important information, you have to pry it out of him. I remember what a quest it was to get a update on his back problems. Valentina is often more open, actually.

Lambiel probably had some input into the entire program - you cannot choreograph a step sequence in isolation. At least it sounds like we are finally getting a lyrical/romantic/classical SP.

Nice that Dmitri Aliev is his sparring partner, he's the second one I like the most right now among Russian Men :) I hope it will benefit both of them :hap10:

The full interview with Valentina:
http://rsport.ru/interview/20170725/1123359020.html

Summary:

She doesn't want to name the music of new programms, but says, that the short will be lyric part+tango part, the FP will be mix of few songs. She thinks, that style changed a bit and we will see the new image of Misha. She insists, that they will not change SP&FP, even if Fed will recommend to do it, because Misha likes both programms. He will be at juniour tests skates in Novogorsk and will show them. (BTW, Stasya will be there too, she will combine junior and senior competitions next season)

They had a chance to work with different choreographs, but they choose to work with Stephan. Mika and Olga visited him and were there for 6 days, worked a lot, Stephan made step sequences in the both programms. They liked very much this expirience, and Mika don't mind to do it once again.

They plan to make the first full skate of the programms at Open tests in September and to take part at least at one Challenger before CoR. They planned two, but now doubt about it, because they are too close.

About jumps she says that they do not skate his routines with the all jumps (2+3 Quads for SP and FP). He made a few good 4Lz just at the day they talked with the journalist, his 4T is OK, but he mostly falls from 4S so far. But he doesn't give up and tries it again and again.

At the and of April they all, Misha, Stasya, and - I'm not sure, but it seems like Valentina too - visited a health resort, and recovered from their health issues, and now everyone is OK.

I agree Mika is a 'deep' one :luv17:
I too hope that Lambiel looked at the entire programs and probably made some suggestions which would help to add a bit of 'polish'.
I just hope they chose good music which will do its part of work not leaving Mika to do it all (I feel it was a case in all his previous programs though as a mad fan I am reluctant to say so..)

@buton
So we know a little more about music - lyrical/tango for SP
medley for LP ....Don't know what to think, so far doesn't sound too encouraging :scratch2:
But I like that they are determined to fight for the programs with the Fed if necessary
Regarding the jumps - wishing with all my heart they would leave 4S alone and add a second 4T instead - but sure they know best
Also a common sense seems to have prevailed and there will be only one B-comp - Bratislava
And finally it was great to hear some news - the off season seems like an eternity!

I bet it will be some jazz medley. Mika himself said it something common for him, but still something new. He did few programms already with jazz - The Mask, Fever, NBC. Maybe now it will be jazz with lyrics.

Jazz would be cool! But my impression from that little both Mika and Valentina said that the LP will be again in more or less same style as in the last season. I hope I am wrong because I was hoping for a total change of 'direction'

I have a soft spot for him and will probably like whatever he comes up with but I'm conservative when it comes to figure skating. I'm still not used to music with lyrics unless it's for exhibition only. I find it disturbing in cometition but whatever the music, I'll keep my fingers crossed for him.
