Ashley Wagner to pose for ESPN's Body Issue

Former University of Washington basketball star Isaiah Thomas and Olympic figure skater Ashley Wagner, who spent the early years of her life in the Puget Sound region, will be among athletes featured in this year's ESPN The Magazine Body Issue.
The Body Issue features athletes posing nude, but strategically covered.
Wagner, who has been one of America's top figure skaters for years, won a bronze medal at the 2014 Games.

The magazine hits newsstands July 7.

I love it! beautiful!

I'm excited to what Ashley would bring to the table in a season full of warhorses. Also based from the video, her step sequence in La La Land is already miles better than the one from Exogenesis!

I agree. It looks like she is doing the step sequence to a more upbeat piece of music. I thought the Exogenesis step seq was beautiful but it felt a bit slow.

I absolutely love this. Seeing the builing process is so interesting, I love the little glimpses unveiled, and how she talks about her feelings, the perspective she puts on her skating... I feel like Ashley is going to pull awesome "Moulin Rouge-like" performances. You can feel she carries the program in her guts. She's just true to her.

I completely agree. I can understand how at one point she questioned her original gut choice, but I'm so glad she decided to stay with it. I think the drama and the emotional resonance are going to be awesome.

As she said, tons of people are going to skate to La La Land but if she gets the job done, the public will remember hers.

I'm fully prepared to enjoy others' skates to La La Land, too ... I can't wait to see Madison and Evan's too.

It's like several people writing a story to the same writing prompt or plot. Every person's story will be different and original to them.

Agree! Just watched the documentary and its so nice to see her connection with la la land, esp when she was talking about 'I might not be the prettiest... the fastest spinner... , but don't give up and follow your dream' at the end. I can already see she will put 120% in the FS this season. Can't wait to see the finish product.

Skateluvr, we have the same taste. Julia L and Ashley are two of my current favorites as well. Although what I like about Elena R. is that although she doesn't have the sophistication and nuance of the other two yet, she seems to connect with her music even if the selection itself is a bit cheesy.

But yeah, Ashley's Moulin Rouge piece was great. So much power and yet musical and fluent.

These photos are amazing! Ashley's got a body that deserves to be shown off! :points:

The article is excellent too.

Among other interesting things, she talks about when she was a teen coming up, the sport was dominated by Japanese girls, most of whom were tiny, a big advantage considering gravity. Now, she thinks a lot of people would rather watch a woman on the ice than a girl.

I'm so proud of Ashley for voicing these thoughts and talking about her challenges along the way. :points:

ETA: I'm editing this nearly a month later :o: :dbana: ... but I wanted to clarify that Ashley said that as a teen, she thought she needed to be tiny and lean, and that caused her some distress. She "didn't do herself much good" by over-working on the stationary bike, etc. She wasn't disparaging other body types. I apologize if my lack of clarity gave anyone who read my post the wrong impression.

Good for Ashley to have the confidence to do the photo shoot in the first place as well as the "exposure" she's getting for the upcoming Olympic year.

On another note, the info about the concussions isn't new, but it's so sad that her short term memory has been affected. Good thing most of us don't notice when she's forgotten some bit of choreo or whatever.

I like that a chiropractor was the one who diagnosed the issue with her neck, since chiropractors get a bad rap as being "quacks" by some in the medical industry.

I just caught up with Ashley's twitter for the last couple of weeks, and I found this that I want to share.

#Ashley As Warrior Ice Queen#. I love the icy blue setting; it's perfect for Ashley!

You'll need to scroll down a few inches to get to this, a grouping of four Olympic hopeful athletes in individual photos. I advise clicking on Ashley's portion, upper right, for the awesome full effect. Nathan's is great too, lower right.

Does anyone know what Ashley's plans are for the early season? She is not doing the Japan Open as usual. Will she compete before Skate Canada?

My best guess is the first we'll see Ashley will be SC. Unless she surprises us and does a Senior B, but my guess is she's going to be staying in CA to train for the season and pace herself through the GP, to Nationals and a hopefully secure a berth on the Olympic team.

On a superficial note, I've noticed that Ashley colored her hair again to a lighter brown with blond highlights in the front. Looks more "natural" on her, IMO.

I haven't heard anything, but I would assume her first competitive outing will be Skate Canada. Unless she decides that since she usually does Japan Open and it's a good test event for her, she goes for a different early competitive event, to have the same rhythm to her season and a different sort of test event. It isn't out of the question.

I agree. As far as I can tell, lighter brown with highlights was her natural color before she got more highlights, culminating in 2015, very blond, and her decision to go closer to her natural looks.

And on another superficial note .... Will Ashley wear a yellow dress for her La La Land FS? I'm already hoping so. What do you think?

I think she should try all colors, yellow, blue, green, red, like Tessa in 2014.

Oh, I like that thought, too! Although I keep seeing her in a yellow dress, in my imagination.

I didn't know the "story" about Tessa. For which program?
