2017-18 State of U.S. Ladies Skating

I feel so bad for Courtney, a medalist twice at grand prixs and this year getting no assignments. Maybe she'll get the tbd SA, but that spot isn't guaranteed to an American, is it?
Although I have a feeling it could be polina's or bradie 's ...

Speaking of Polina, do we know what her programs are this year? I've seen a couple of clips that show her jumping but, I haven't seen an entire program.

She'll be at Glacier Falls next week! Along with Mariah and Karen! Whoo hoo!

If Tessa doesn't show up at Philly International, I question if she'll make either the JGP or the GP.

Polina may get SA if she shows she's ready next week at Glacier Falls.

Bradie seems the most likely since she's been scoring high all summer. If she does so again after Philly International and Polina doesn't look strong the spot may be hers.

I think she has said she is keeping last years programs that she never got to skate to. I believe it was Time to Say Goodbye and the song from the Diamonds are Forever adds.

If Tessa doesn't show up for a summer event, then I would assume she is injured. It makes sense that she might have a slower start to her season when adjusting to a new training situation, but Frank's athletes usually go to the events in California. And when you are only tenth at Nationals, you show up for the summer events if you can. I hope we will see her in Philadelphia or at Golden West, skating healthy. I don't expect Frank to magically push any buttons here. Personally, I think Tessa needs the time and experience in competition. She has a beautiful style on the ice. Let's just enjoy watching her develop in her own time.

Tessa needs to compete on the JGP considering she has never medaled and doesn't have much experience internationally. I still don't know why she didn't try for the Junior title at Nationals instead of skating as a Senior where she had no chance of being on the podium especially since she missed the last two Nationals because of injury.

The last thing I want to hear is that Tessa is injured again! She's been struggling with injuries for years. The reason why she's not further than she is is because of them. I'd hoped she'd outgrown her osgood Schlatter by now. I'm hoping Frank is simply taking his time developing her as a competitor.

I too think Tessa needs to develop in her own time. She really hasn't had a chance to compete at nationals consistently because of her injuries. A good season on the JGP will be best.

She probably wanted to go senior because she felt ready. Tom Z is not one to hold his skaters back. Quite the opposite. But a bad experience is still a learning opportunity. She's had to deal with a lot of nerves and can learn how to control them and deliver.

Congratulations to Courtney for winning Skate Detroit! Awesome performances. In fact, I was never her fan until this minute, when I watched both programs. Loved the 3F-3Loop, love her softer expression, and some of the exits from jumps are gorgeous.

She's skating inside her music now; she's improved her artistry by a mile. Wiki lists her coaches as Todd Sand and John Nicks. That could explain a lot; Ashley's often mentioned how Nicks helped her connect better with her audiences.

I thought I wouldn't like Amazing Grace for the FS, but in fact I love it. I love the Celtic sound in the middle, I like that it's different artists singing, and how it swells to the emotionally powerful section at the end.

I've thought for a few years that Courtney is a far better artist than she's given credit for. She's not necessarily balletic which I think is why she get criticized for not being artistic, but when she's on she commits to the music and performance.

Bradie Tennell, meanwhile, is my sleeper pick for the Skate America host spot and even a spot on the Olympic team. She's been skating very well this summer from what I've heard on the forums and is outside the conversation enough to avoid the pressure.

From the Skate Detroit videos, I can tell both Mirai and Courtney are much trimmer than last season. Good start for a new season.

As to Tressa, I am not very optimistic. Her jumps are small now and she will go through some major growth in the next two years. If she does not improve her jumps, she could be out of the picture even though other aspects of her skating are great for her age.

Did anyone else see the most recent of Mirai's skates at Skate Detroit during the final round? She looked really good and had a much more successful triple axel attempt- still UR but better. I'm glad to see they put it after the triple triple in the long. I think it's a better strategy.

I've probably thought about this too much, but I'd have loved it if Karen Chen decided to skate to 2NE1's "I Am the Best " for her sp. It would be playing to the audience, and if Rohehn (?) choreographed something intricate and cool, it would stand out.

I read on another forum that Kaitlyn Nguyen and Ting Cui has been selected for JGP Australia.

Reported first on GS two days ago :). (p. 36 of this thread.)

But I guess it was easy to overlook then b/c of Skate Detroit news.

Glad that you made mention again. :thank:

Speaking of Skate Detroit, I'm thrilled for Mirai :dance2:. Also Courtney :yay:.

I read on another forum that Kaitlyn Nguyen and Ting Cui has been selected for JGP Australia.

Both very promising young talents, so I'm extremely excited to see how things work out for them! I've been got high hopes for Kaitlyn - she's both extremely technically proficient and fairly consistent. Exactly what the US juniors need to compete with the Russian and Japanese girls. I haven't seen as much of Ting, so I'm not sure what to expect from her, but I do remember being impressed by her at Nationals. I'm excited to see a) who else gets assigned to this JGP and b) how they do in their JGP debuts!

Why aren't the JGP assignments posted yet? The juniors go on next month! Is a jgp spot based on a season best score? Or does the federation pick who they want?
