2017-18 State of U.S. Ladies Skating

Why aren't the JGP assignments posted yet? The juniors go on next month! Is a jgp spot based on a season best score? Or does the federation pick who they want?

Federations pick which event the skaters go to so the list of substitutes can be quite daunting and more importantly .... constantly changing and replacing who was scheduled to go where. I actually prefer it over the Senior GP but both have their drawbacks and benefits.

On the JGP injuries don't necassarily mean your season is over because they can just change your event to a later date but the federations can and also do make moves to try and shape who makes the GPF. Putting their top skaters in events to try and foil other countries best prospects. It can seem rather cut throat and can even put the littler federations at a disadvantage if their skaters aren't top tier and get caught up in the feuding.

But how are the skaters chosen?

But how are the skaters chosen?

I'll let someone more qualified answer but I'm sure from country to country it varies based on the amount of skaters eligible. In the US I'd guess that previous season results on JGP, regional competions, and nationals results weigh very heavily on the selections because we have a large number of qualified skaters. There must be some sort of committee making the decisions.

I feel like Chuckm should answer this one though or someone with more experience on the matter.

Polina's new SP. FINALLY!

I recall reading from someone that she has been training triples. So hopefully these were not unintentional pops.

This program is fierce - excellent. Also, she is SO TALL. Holy moly.

I'm excited about Polina this season, which is a surprise.

Her ice coverage really improved or maybe the rink is just small? She just needs to be careful because usually the taller girls tend to look slower even though their ice coverage are usually really good.

She is supposed to compete next week right?

Wow, she has a very commanding presence here. This is not the type of program I expected from her, but it really works.

The commanding presence was my takeaway as well. She definitely looks very tall but I feel it makes her look a little sloppy at times. I'm curious how the triples are coming along. If she can land the jumps fully rotated, I could see this putting her in a good position for the LP at Nationals.

Polina needs a really good show this week at Glacier Falls to get the SA slot. Singles are normal when developing the program, so I'm not concerned about an early comp. it's next week that counts.

I love this so far! Only critique is that stirrup pants are never a thing that should happen. Other than that this is a program I really look forward to seeing as it develops!

I agree, she looks like she's wearing a practice outfit. In fact, that performance looked like it was done at the end of practice session. I realize it's early but, she could have worn one of her old costumes if her new costumes aren't ready. She is quite powerful but, until we see the jumps, I can't see giving her SA over Courtney Hicks.

Does anyone know if there's going to be a livestream of Glacier Falls?

No. After the competition they give projectional videos to ice network that we can view for free. There will be some fancam at the very least in the meanwhile.

Maybe someone else mentioned it, but just for clarity's sake, Tessa Hong is listed on the sub list for JGP Brisbane.

Did anyone else see the most recent of Mirai's skates at Skate Detroit during the final round? She looked really good and had a much more successful triple axel attempt- still UR but better. I'm glad to see they put it after the triple triple in the long. I think it's a better strategy.

I was glad to see that too and I hope they consider doing the same in the SP. She's pretty successful with her 3F-3T, not so much yet with the 3A. I think it would give her a psychological boost to have the combo in the bag and THEN go for the 3A as the next jump.

Looks great. She's worked on her lines and looks much less gangly than she did a few years ago. If she can get the jumps back, she will definitely be a threat, in US and world.

I love Polina more and more every time I see her skate, she's really growing into her arms and they aren't as wild as in the past, she definitely has better control of them.:agree:

But the question is why this music why?! All I'm going to think about is that she's skating to the music from a De Beers diamond commercial. :palmf:

That's a good program for Edmund. But will she get her triples back?

The last season or two she did singles and doubles mostly even at Glacier Falls. I don't even think she did the FS at GF the year she won 4CC. She's probably just nailing the choreography like in the past. I guess time will tell but I also don't think there is any need for alarm.
