2017-18 State of U.S. Ladies Skating

Mr. Rice: I noticed in the Detroit videos that Courtney's legs look much different than in recent seasons; almost how she looked as a junior. I don't think weight loss alone would account for it; she would have lost more proportionately. Do you think she is doing different off-ice training, perhaps intensive stretching and ballet?

I definitely agree with this. Do you remember when Courtney used to post pictures of her doing squats in the gym? She was also dead-lifting some heavy weights. I think she may have decided to go for a longer, leaner look this season. I think she may be doing Yoga and Ballet. Yoga for flexibility and Ballet for strength. What ever she's doing, it's the right thing. She looks great....

Really interesting. It also speaks to Ashley's remarks, somewhat, of the delicate balance needed between strength and muscle. And Gracie's remarks about strong legs. Good for Courtney, and good for her team for addressing this. She does look great.

Adam mentioned in his TSL interview that when he first came to Rafael for coaching, he'd been weight training with the pairs guys in Canada. Raf said at a session, "Dude, you look big!" to which Adam replied, "oh ... thank you." Raf said no, I mean you look fat! So they altered his off-ice work to create the necessary balance.

YOU GUYS LOOK AT MIRAI'S 3A SHE JUST UPLOADED ON INSTAGRAM :jaw: :jaw: :jaw:

I think I'd still want to have a slow-mo on that. It looks beautiful but, put your headphones on......I hear an under-rotation. It's certainly much closer than any attempt she's made thus far and it would be huge if she can land it at an event. She clearly wants to make it back to the Olympics and she seems to be well on her way to getting there.

That's not true. 2014 Skate America was the first GP of the season in October. Same with 2013. You must be thinking of something else?

Sorry, I meant the 2009 Skate America just before the 2010 Olympics. (Skate America was the fifth of the six events that year.)

Back in the day, when figure skating received more attention from ABC TV, the season in the U.S. was figured to start with Skate America in October and to culminate with U.S. Nationals in January, with various cheesefest, pro-ams, etc., in between. By 2009, interest had fallen off considerably (plus the lucrative ABC contract expired as was not renewed). For the 2010 Olympics the USFSA bundled a late November SA and a January U.S. Nationals together as a lead-in to the Olympics.

I think a similar plan is the motivation for rearranging the traditional order (that of having SA first) of the grand prix events in 2017. (Just guessing about motivation for this year's change, but IIRC :) the strategy was well publicized in the 2009-2010 season.)

At least 130° UR.

Still, a good effort.

Mirai does have that technique of rotating on her toe-pick before her blade comes down to a weight-bearing position in the ice. She gets quite a few UR calls when this happens, even if the jump looks good to the eye in real time.

Keep working, Mirai. I have faith.

The USFSA can wait until the last minute to assign the SA spot. Conceivably Polina could do so well at the event in France that they will decide to give her a shot at making the final. Long shot either way, though, considering the strength of the international competition.

I think Feds are required to fill those last slots by August or September.

This isn't the JGP. If Polina wants that slot she needs to prove that she's ready now. This weekend and next weekend several eligible members of team USA will debut their programs and show to USFSA that they deserve international placements. Bradie and Courtney have both shown they are ready. Last year the both earned internatjonal medals, and often USFS takes that into consideration when handing out the SA slot.

Polina can't afford to wait until later. Champ Camps is in a matter of weeks and the SA slot will be chosen by then. This competition is critical.

Maybe on paper but I think they can swap someone out at the last minute provided they are the host country.

If I remember correctly, if a skater withdraws something like 21 day or more before the event, the host country has to fill the slot. Less than 21 days, the host Feredation can chose whether they want to fill the slot.

There are also situations like the one with Michelle Kwan in 2006. She was actually at the venue and was injured. She left and Emily Hughes flew in and took her place.

It would be pretty cruel to invite Courtney or Bradie to Champ Camps, tell one of them they have SA, have them train for it for months only to snatch it away at the last minute.

The two of them have earn a chance at that spot by competing early and doing their best. Polina must do the same.

I just want to say that USFSA in the past has often gone with highest from nationals for the TBD spots... so i think Caroline Zhang is more in the conversation than some may think. I think a strong showing this weekend and she might get the node. She was fifth at Nationals after all.

Ordinarily I would agree. But her international result in didn't score very high. They'll probably give it to someone that had some modest success internationally last year. Angela got SA after she medalled in the challenger series. Bradie got a Bronze in her challenger and of course Courtney got bronze at COR. It's why their on my short list.

Speaking of Angela.....Where is Angela Wang?? I really want to see her do well this year. She was really a thrill to see when she was a Junior. She had deep edges, and big jumps. She had a triple triple and a beautiful 3 jump combination in her programs when she was a Junior. I'd love to see her have a strong season.

Right now it looks like she is in Sun Valley

She's going to be at Philadelphia international next weekend. Along with a lot of other ladies.

Yes, Skate America is the last Grand Prix event this year. It was like that in 2014, too. They are making an accommodation for NBC TV, which wants to market Skate America, U.S. Nationals, and the Olympics together.

I am not sure what role (if any) was played by accommodation of NBC.
Even if(?) it was some kind of factor in Skate America being the last GP this season, I do not think it was the only factor or the original factor.

IIRC, at the USFS press conference at 2017 Nats, Auxier and/or Raith said that as this season's host of Euros in Moscow, the Russian Fed wanted Rostelecom to take place early.
I do not remember whether the USFS officials elucidated what else led to Skate America going last ... do not remember whether they uttered one word about NBC.

I would have tried to re-watch the presser, but something is wrong with the IN video.

[ETA, off topic, but it raised my eyebrows to see these notations on the ISU page for 2018 Euros:

The anti-doping tests for these Championships will be performed by an independent foreign organization mandated by the ISU.

Considering the pending conclusions related to the McLaren Report, ISU Regulations, Rule 127, paragraph 7 may apply which includes the following provision: “The Council may, for emergency, safety or other serious reasons, either upon request of the organizing ISU Member or on its own initiative, cancel the definite allotment or cancel the Championships at any time.”

Remember the host country picks the skaters so SA is the only GP where USFS gets to decide who is going. Why? The host country pays the skater's expenses to the GP.

Assignments are different with the JGP. There each country gets XX slots total over the 6 events and the Federation then gets to chose who goes into each of their preassigned slots.

Yes :agree:.

(Except you meant 7 JGPs leading up to the JGPF.)

She looks great!! Thanks for that clip....It's going to be quite a season for the US Ladies....

I think that Angela typically looks great at the beginning of the season - she's even had a superb SP at Pacific Coast Sectionals last season. I'm still wondering when she will pull it together at U.S. Nationals. I wonder if this is her last season - isn't she almost done with college and heading to graduate school?
