2017-18 State of U.S. Men's Figure Skating

This SP performance confirmed by earlier sense of indifference/dislike. Not a fan, and it has nothing to do with the fall on the quad.

For me, I am withholding judgement until I see a version with really good sound, like on network TV. I could hardly make out the music on this one.

By the way, that is the objection that I have to vocal music in general. I can rarely pick out the words, and if I try to do so, that distracts me from the skating. :(

To be clear, I don't think Sean will make the Olympic team - I'd put his odds about even with Grant and Ross at this point. But seeing someone skate to Tequila in the Olympic games? :points:

You know what? It's different, young, and brash.

The Nathan Chen fanfest thread has a link to a short clip of Nathan working with Shea-Lynn on what we're guessing is his SP. The music is cool and modern. It has lyrics (boo) but it is fresh and different.

Maybe signalling a shift in men's skating away from warhorses? We'll see.

There's actually a clip that was posted today from Sun Valley (Ryan jumping within the video is just a bonus for me ;)). The music playing in this video with Nathan is Benjamin Clementine - "Nemesis." He's skating well (as I reported in his fanfest) Here is the URL from the fan fest that sheetz originally posted: https://www.instagram.com/p/BXJRxVIBRd6/

I'm looking forward to a video of his LP. I absolutely loved an earlier clip of run-through that someone posted.

Here we go, Tonto. Thanks to @Tavi in the FanFest:

Fancam of Jason's LP at Glacier Falls

Thanks, El.

That LP is glorious. I really think it might be the best program he's ever had. Sure, most of the jumps were marked, except for the 4S attempt... but forget that.

The program is beautiful. So, in a way, this competition confirmed my earlier leanings towards both his SP and LP.

Once he gets it all together on this LP, it will be a masterpiece.

For the record, I really like the way you (and others) credit the OP when you cross-post content.

Shout-out to Tavi for getting this up on GS.

For me, the LP does all of the beautiful, more serious/emotional work he and Rohene wanted to do with the Pianist, but better. Less spirals, more balanced.

It is wonderful, and not about to go viral like Riverdance, but that's what the SP is for.

Shout out to umbsgoblue for this vid and to lenny318 for her tireless reports in the GF thread.

I am already stunned by the beauty of this program, as well as how much progress he's made with it in the few weeks since I saw it in Milwaukee. And they made a lot of changes in the choreo in that time.

It's interesting how much more at ease he is with this than the SP. And so nice to see his first ever 4S attempt - not perfect but it looks to me like he might get it faster than the 4T. In both cases, I'm wondering if he isn't fully objective about what he does best.

ETA I really like what Nathan is doing in that clip - he's been working hard!

I don't know... 8th place has been a lucky nationals placement for the past few years (no really, look it up). It is just a matter of him following the pattern.

I think maybe 8th is a good spot for skaters to be kinda taken seriously but without massive pressure and attention. If Sean can get in the final group, he is totally the type of skater who could have a Riverdance moment and we have three spots. I don't think he is that crazy of a bet... we have three spots... having a wild card is not that crazy.

He'd have to pass a lot of men who tend to outscore him, so imo it is a little crazy (I mean, it'd be cool, but there are so many strong skaters ahead of him). I mean, Jason, Adam, Max and Nathan have all been National Champ, Vincent has medalled and has crazy tech content, then there's also Grant, Ross, Alex Johnson and Tim Dolensky. He'd have to be better then all but two of them, not just a couple. And the trend is very cool, but Sean is pretty different than those guys. In 2012, Max was only 19 and it was his first time competing senior at Nationals. In 2013, Jason was 18, and in 2014, Adam was a previous medallist who was struggling and then bounced back the next year. In 2015, Nathan was 15 and injured, and finally in 2016, Vincent was 15 and had missed the whole previous season. With the exception of Adam in 2014, they were all young skaters on the way up. Sean is 27 and he's never been a senior National medallist. He's very fun though.

I was at glacier falls to see the men today! Jason was wonderful and I really loved the different swells of the music. We got to meet Jason afterwards and he is just THE SWEETEST seriously. Grant was lovely as well. Phantom is certainly not what I would pick for any skater at this point but I enjoyed his program nonetheless! Excited to see how it develops over the seasons. And Sean is just a perfect showman, we need more of the type of programs his lp is, just pure showy let's have a good time entertainment

So envious you got to see this event! Grant knew very well what he was doing when he picked POTO, he said in an interview, I know you're rolling your eyes, but wait until you see what I can do with it. He's doing fine:clap: And Sean has always been a crowd pleaser:agree:

And of course no one who has met Jason has said anything but that he's the nicest guy ever .....

Thanks for sharing.

Just binge watched a bunch of Glacier Falls videos, and already fell in love with Jason's LP. The music is to die for, and the choreography is matched. Jumps are messy at the moment but he does not usually do well in summer. Now I really want to see him at the Olympics.

So, it looks like Ross won!!!!!! I'm so happy for him. I'm sure he'll be retiring after this season and I'd love to him make the Olympic Team. Haven't seen the LP's yet but from the scores and from what I've been reading, It sounds like Jason had a great Long Program and I can't wait to see all the LP's today....

After finally getting to see the free skates from Philadelphia I must say that I'm very excited for the US Men...I haven't see Nathan yet but, I was blown away by Timothy Dolensky. It really is going to be a fight amongst the US to get on the Olympic Team. If Tim doesn't get on the team, I hope they send him to 4CC. The GP events will be more important than every this season as these skaters look to build momentum and make their cases for getting on the Olympic Team.....So very promising to see our Men looking so good this early. :points:

FWIW, the link below confirms that Adam Rippon and Mariah Bell competed over the past weekend at the Orange County Open Championships in Yorba Linda.

(Yesterday the unconfirmed likelihood was being discussed in Mariah's fan thread and the U.S. Ladies thread.)

So far, I do not see any event results on the Orange County FSC site.

From Unseen Skaters, it seems Adam got 256.21 (SP 89.33 and FS 166.88). 2nd best among US men in summer competitions. It looks like only Nathan has not yet competed in club competitions.
