Fleetwood Mac - World Turning. (my favorite FM song...)

Useless piece of information time.

A month or two ago, Christine McVie and Lindsey Buckingham released an album together, and it started me wondering what the other members of Fleetwood Mac were up to. So, I started looking them up. And (for obvious reasons) Mick Fleetwood was the first. And I made a discovery.

One of his middle names is my surname!!! :jaw: :jaw: :jaw:

So, doing a bit of digging on genealogy websites, I discovered that it was his Granny's maiden name. And that her parents came from Co. Monaghan. Which borders the country I am from, Co. Tyrone.

Now, given that it is not a very common surname in the greater scheme of things, and the proximity, I think we might be related. Especially since the names that were coming up in Mick's family were also used a lot in my family.

Small world, eh?

It's a good job that I like Fleetwood Mac!

For Fleetwood Mac fans. As we have read above, Lindsey Buckingham and Christine McVie are back.

From their new album: In My World

Christine McVie performs Songbird and informs of a new Fleetwood Mac world tour in 2018 as part of her interview on The One Show on BBC One on 13th June 2017.

Strictly speaking, it's not right now. But on Sunday afternoon, I was at a concert by the Ulster Orchestra (with singing on some pieces from Sinéad O'Kelly).

Here are some of the pieces they played (they didn't give out a programme, so I am doing this from memory):

Brahms - "Hungarian Dance #5"
Dvořák - "Slavonic Dance #8" (video of them playing it at 2016 "Proms In The Park" concert in Belfast)
Grieg - "Morning" (from "Peer Gynt")
Grieg - "In The Hall Of The Mountain King" (from "Peer Gynt")
Bizet - "Habanera" (from "Carmen")
Bizet - "March Of The Toreadors" (from "Carmen")
Khachaturian - "Masquerade Waltz" (yes, I was picturing Tanya and Max's 2013-14 SP in my head while it was being played!)
Piazzolla - "Libertango"
Rossini - "William Tell Overture"

And any classical music concert in Northern Ireland wouldn't be complete without our National Anthem, the "Londonderry Air" (don't like it).

I couldn't make out what the conductor was saying when he told us what the first piece they played was. And it is really annoying me, because I have wanted to know for years what it was. :bang: For the simple reason that people outside Northern Ireland (and probably the South as well) wouldn't know what I was talking about if I referred to it as the theme from "The Kelly Show"! [Local chat show on Ulster TV, presented by Gerry Kelly]

There was also something from one of the members of the Strauss family. I remember the conductor cracking a joke that since we all know the "Blue Danube", they were going to play something else. But I can't for the life of me remember what it was that they did play! :rolleye:

It was an enjoyable concert, albeit a bit on the short side (barely 2 hours from start to finish, and that was including a 25 minute interval! :drama: ). And although I generally don't like female opera singers, Sinéad was actually quite pleasant to listen to.

Looking forward to my next bit of culture, whenever that may be! (It's a real pity I'll be away when the BBC NI "Proms In The Park" concert is held in just over 2 weeks. Especially since this year it is being held literally a stone's throw away from my Auntie's house! :palmf: )

EDIT: ...and then I go onto Facebook to look for Sinéad's page, and I find that a week before the concert, she shared a post from the Ulster Orchestra's page that gave the planned running order for the concert! :palmf:

Suppé Overture: Light Cavalry
Brahms Hungarian Dance No.5
Mozart Voi che sapete (The Marriage of Figaro)
Dvořák Slavonic Dance No.8
Rossini Una voce poco fa (The Barber of Seville)
Strauss Tales from the Vienna Woods

*****

Grieg Morning (Peer Gynt)
Bizet Toreadors’ march (Carmen)
Bizet Habanera (Carmen)
Bizet Seguidille (Carmen)
Smetana Dance of the comedians
(The Bartered Bride)
Trad. arr. Harty The Londonderry Air
Piazzolla Libertango
Rossini Galop from William Tell overture

Although, there were some changes. For example, the "Masquerade Waltz" was added into the middle of the second half (so not an encore).

My Ubër trendy friends who listen to the most obscure music have been playing this song all summer. I tried to be too cool for it but the catchy chorus won the day and I just wound up buying it and now it can be found overtaking my iPod on semi regular basis :o:

Andy G - Proud

To me it's sort of got the LoFi sound that Elliot Smith had but more folk than mood. I'm curious if anyone else likes it? I imagine a lot of mixed reactions.

Just got a major shock when I saw a post that my cousin's daughter found and shared on Facebook.

For the past 20 years - ever since it was released - I did not realise that a song I liked was a cover version (she didn't realise either).

Here is the original version:

Ednaswap - "Torn"

Sounds rather different, doesn’t it?!

But, I like it too!

It seems to be a little more complicated.:)

"Torn" is a song written by Scott Cutler, Anne Preven and Phil Thornalley in 1993. It was first recorded that year by Danish singer Lis Sørensen, and again two years later by Cutler and Preven's American alternative rock band Ednaswap.

True. But, I'm working on the principle that they wrote it, so it's their song.

Put it like this - "I Wanna Be Your Man" was written by Lennon and McCartney, and was released by the Beatles in 1963. But the Rolling Stones managed to release a cover of it 3 weeks before the Beatles released their version. So, is the Rolling Stones version the "original" version? Nope.

Plus, Soerensen's version of "Torn" is in a different language.

Nevertheless, I like all three versions of "Torn".

It just goes to show how the same thing can be interpreted in very different ways, but still be good.

Which says a lot about the skills of the writers. :agree:
