Gracie Gold's prospects for 2018 season?

See what I mean....Marina is NOT the right coach for Gracie. My Ballet teacher would NEVER let us practice on an oversized sweatshirt. Seriously, we were practicing at Sapporo the Ice Festival in Japan and we were in Unitards, Leg Warmers, and Beanies, that was it. How is Marina supposed to see Gracie's body lines while she's wearing an oversized sweatshirt? Here's a picture of the festival. https://ilikevents.com/images/share/event/sapporo-snow-feastival/pic2.jpg

I'm not quite sure what you are trying to presume this means about Marina but the way Gracie dresses doesn't have much bearing on Marina. Marina isn't even here.

She'll never perform in anything as heavy as a sweatshirt and she shouldn't practice that way once she gets to an event.

Isn't the real problem with an over-sized sweatshirt is that it restricts movement? I've noticed that even when I'm doing something like running. Having clothes that fit to your body (but not too small of course) allows your body to use it's fullest range of motion.

I don't know if Marina is the "right" coach for Gracie - but I definitely think that she couldn't be a worse coach for her than Frank.

Yes it restricts movement which is why we don't usually wear them to train or even warm up. I'm pretty sure that the consensus about her wearing them is because she's self conscious about how she looks?!:confused2:

It's currently almost 90 degrees farenheit here and was near the same during practice and most everyone else was wearing tanks or tees.

Addressing the coaching issue: Frank wasn't a bad coach and was the least of her problems whether people want to believe so or not. :slink:

I love how quickly Marina is getting blamed. Typical.

I certainly don't blame Marina for Gracie's struggles.....She was terrible at Nationals last year and she wasn't with Marina. Gracie has been skating at an elite level for 5 years, she is over 21 and is in complete control of what happens to her career. Marina already has a stable of Dance Champions and we all know that she is responsible for putting US Ice Dance on the map. This is in Gracie's hands and I will give her full credit if she can turn her career around and get back on the podium where she belongs.

But Marina isn't just with ice dance. She's trained all disciplines for years.

I love how quickly people are assuming that just because Gracie did a couple of singles and doubles in the practice warmup that's all she can do...

I agree. It's not her credentials that I question. It's the lack of personal attention that I think a struggling Gracie needs right now. As great as Marina is, she has a stable of skaters who all need her. She's a bit like Raf and Brian Orser, they have a full roster of champions and I think Gracie needs extra attention right now. Do you remember when Michelle went to Scott Williams.....Maybe she should have called him. She has so much talent that I don't think anyone would have said no to her. Who is choreographing for Gracie this year? Is it Marina? I can't figure out why her programs aren't ready, or at least they weren't ready for camp.

We all know Gracie can do amazing jumps. Based on her recent summer form, it's not difficult to believe that the jumps of old are not there at present.

In my case, I guess I was expecting more from Gracie. I thought that missing the podium at Nationals would light a BIG fire under her and I was shocked to see her skate with a seeming lack of fire during the summer. Karen and Nathan were great during the summer shows and I was hoping to see Gracie make statement over the summer. I still have hope for her and will be rooting for her to be great at nationals.

Actually, I've seen her multiple times over the spring and summer and it's not getting any better. Let's hope she surprises everyone and pulls out the triples in the show tonight.

This is how I feel as well. I am a BIG fan of Gracie's and I'm worried about her. I'm not mad or disappointed, I'm worried. I've seen Gracie live and she was just brilliant! Her jumps were huge and they flew across the ice. She gave everyone in the audience the hope that we'd see another World Champion from the US. I want the best for her.

I wonder what the federation is supposed to do if a skater you're sponsoring and sending to prestigious internationals is just doing doubles? I would think Gracie showed something more at Champs Camp if she recently got a Senior B assignment that's coming up in about 3 weeks... oy vey.

Can I make a modest request, maybe of the mods, if this is appropriate?

Can we merge the Gracie talk/reports/commentary with the US Ladies thread? I keep hoping I will see something new on Champs Camp, but I don't think that's going to happen.

As promised earlier in the thread: Here's my first part of the report on Gracie at Sun Valley.

Pro practice and show practice has been over for about a half hour now. From what I could see when I wasn't busy, she mostly ran choreography (which looked like she was having a hard time remembering), and practiced spins. She mostly did single jumps, waltz jumps and one or two badly UR doubles.

She wore all black with a oversized sweatshirt for 99% of the practice.

Will try to report later after the show.

Thanks for the update. I noticed in the champs camp photos she was also wearing sweatshirts. I don't really see how she'll be ready for her grand prix assignments at this rate. I kind of think they need to change the eligibility criteria for the GP so that skaters only get spots if they've been skating well recently and not a year ago or more.

I agree with this and I'd love to see Courtney Hicks on the GP if Gracie isn't landing triples when the GP season begins. I know that we have skaters like Angela Wang, Tessa Hong, and Bradie Tennell who are capable of doing very well on the GP. I just can't fathom Gracie not getting her jumps back but, if she doesn't show drastic improvement, I'd be upset if I were any of the skaters I just listed.

That's part or it but, what it really does is mask a skaters body line. Gracie had beautiful body lines when she was with Frank and I can imagine that Lori never let her do an "All Out" run of her program wearing a sweatshirt. A nit cap and gloves are all Gracie used to wear during her practices. Here's Gracie practicing her SP at Worlds in 2016. She is certainly not wearing ANY big, or lose fitting clothes..: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=bBPxXXclO-U
